So does my TSS. I think the skid just keeps the underside cleaner versus offering protection for off roading.

I think Baxter makes good stuff, and made in the US. I was looking at this but decided to live with the cartridge for now.

Since it's a new truck, if by the small chance something goes wrong warranty-wise (like a leaking coolant hose/clamp) I wouldn't want the dealership to see that Baxter filter setup while under warranty. They'd love to use it as the reason for anything that is wrong with your truck. Just wouldn't want to give them any ammunition.

There's 3 different 'skids'. 4x4 got standard cheap skid not advertised(2wd 5.7 might also get this one?) >> TRD OR gets a marginally better but still cheap one >> TRD Pro alum. skid.

The first two basically being tinfoil splash shields.

I didn't like the cartridge type either coming from domestics, but honestly it isn't any more difficult than the spin on. Get the right wrench and the metal filter housing and imo it's easier than the spin ons. I'd just leave it how they designed it. Oil is way too important of an item to start trying to use gadgets to re-engineer the filter setup. My .02

Thanks for the input. My previous truck I had the metal filter housing and the drain bolt at the bottom would be too tight and the whole housing would come off when trying to drain the oil. Probably my fault and wasn't terribly messy but I think this will be much better for me especially after I get the Fumoto drain valve.

The oe skid plate is very thin, i agree it is probably mostly intended on air flow and protecting muds/branches from flowing straight up into the engine bay

I always thought the anti-drain keeps oil from draining from the filter while sitting. That would be important if the filter screws onto the side of the engine and sits horizontally. Some even sit on top with the opening down. Anti-drain would be very important there. But with the filter hanging vertically with the opening up, where's it going to drain to? I can't see the anti-drain being of any benefit.

    Maybe I'm wrong -- wouldn't be a first :)

If the oil filter was higher than the oil pan, oil could drain backwards from higher in the engine, through the filter back to the pan. Even if vertical. Maybe im wrong too

Even if higher than the oil pan the oil would have to flow up first to drain out, though.

My mother-in-law had a Jeep with the oil filter on front of the engine well above the pan. If the filter didn't have a good anti-drain back valve it could sit there and drain mostly empty. I just can't see that being an issue on the Toyotas.

I just installed mine and the stock skid plate fits easily with 3 to 4" clearance. IMG_0709.jpg IMG_0711.jpg IMG_0712.jpg

Great, thanks for the info. I will be getting the skid plate off my old truck and it will get a newer one.

I'm looking forward to my next oil change! A benefit of the expensive baxter adapter is I won't have to remove the skid plate on my next oil change. I can just reach in there and spin the filter off. I'll use a ziplock bag and some rags to catch the mess but I'm sure that'll beat skid plate removal.

I cut a hole in my old skid plate to remove the filter without dropping the skid plate. As long as the filter doesn't hang lower than that, it should work great to remove the spin on filter.

Yes, I've seen some photos on this site of people cutting a hole or cutting a door and welding hardware onto it to reattach it. I'll do that (either a hole or a door) if I have any trouble spinning it off through the side opening of the skid plate.
