Is BSM and rear cross traffic alert available on the 2021 Tundra TRD Pro?

    Hi everyone, new member here and I’m about to pull the trigger on a new 2021 Tundra TRD Pro.

    The truck is out of state so I’m doing everything over the phone. I did not ask whether it had blind spot monitoring or the rear cross traffic alert system, however I did ask if it had the JBL stereo which it does have. I assumed that if it had the JBL stereo, it had the premium interior option and included BSM and rear cross traffic alert, as that’s how my 2018 Tacoma came. Now I’m finding mixed info with some reviewers stating that you can’t even get that tech on a TRD Pro at all and that you’d have to go with a Platinum or 1794 trim level to get it.

    Can anyone tell me if their TRD Pro has BSM and rear cross traffic alert system?

    Does anyone have a JBL stereo option and not have this tech?

    Thanks!

    The BSM and RCTA options are separate from interior options. Do you have the VIN? If so, it's easy to get the window sticker or build information.

    I do have the VIN! Where would I go to look this up?

    You can download the Toyota owners ap.

    BTW, that's a pre production VIN.

    So that means I can’t check it, correct? Guess I’ll have to call tomorrow and find out.

    No, you can check it. If it comes up invalid, the truck has been built and then it's call the dealer time.

    I just tried that VIN and it's no longer valid.

    I was just trying to build one and it did not look like, the BSM was available on the Pro. Don't know about the JBL.

    Only TRD Pros in Canada have BSM and RCTA. These work off the bumper sensors and TRD Pros in the US do not have the sensors, none of them.

    That sucks. That may be a deal breaker for me. I love how a $60k full size truck doesn’t even offer them, but a several year old Tacoma TRD Pro does. What was Toyota Thinking?!

    So you know yourself but honestly I don’t need it. I am a bells and whistles person and owning this takes me back to when first got my license.

    It’s made me a better driver and not so reliant and “lazy.”

    I think these safety features and and some other creature stuff is why people go with the platinum and make it into a pro. But me personally didn’t want to go through the work and rather just leave those few things off.

    You can retrofit them, look up @RainMan_PNW build thread, its useful, but sometimes my rcta can be overly sensitive.

    Yes. It is possible to add, but not by the dealer and not with any sort of warranty or factory support. 100% DIY from sourcing the parts to running new wires to landing pins in the factory connectors. My build thread has all the details.

    Also know that currently there are exactly two options for aftermarket rear bumpers that will work with BSM, and there aren’t many people with either of those to get any reviews. So if you think at any point you’ll be adding rear armor, you’ll likely end up having to disable them if you want something high clearance or with any sort of options.

    Is there a write up on how to do this? I don’t plan on modifying this truck like I did with the Tacoma unless it’s to add creature comforts like BSM. That’s why I’m buying the Pro. I do wish it had memory and cooled seats though!

    You’re not missing much with cooled seats in a pro. The tundra cooled seats are the JBL equivalent, they ain’t great.

    Nope but you'll get lane departure and tss. You tell me which is more important to an off roading truck... Yup bsm would be way more useful than the two worthless tools I turned off.

    Have '21 TRD pro from USA, does not have bsm or rct.

    Edit:. The JBL "premium" audio is trash. If you want premium audio be prepared to drop another $1500+ to upgrade all of the factory stereo.

    I was surprised when my 2020 Pro didn't have BSM because my 2015 Limited did, but after having my truck for a year and a half I can definitely say I don't miss it. The stock audio system is also sub par as others have pointed out, but I've upgraded that. The lack of memory seats is honestly the thing I am most irritated about, but such is life.

    It's still a great truck and something I'd buy 10/10 times again, but it isn't perfect.

    I’ve got the JBL stereo in my 18 Tacoma and I’m very happy with it for a factory stereo

    One JBL is not comparable to another. My wife's 2015 4Runner has the JBL Upgraded system and it pounds. My 2021 Tundra is trash audio.

    No BSM in a Pro. You can buy a lower trim with more features, faux Pro it, be better featured, and cheaper than a Pro.

    Yes. The fact my wife's used 6yr old 4Runner is so much better than my 2021 TRD Pro is ridiculous.

    Yeah but I’m trying to get a truck I don’t have to put any money into. I have a 2018 Tacoma that I put all the Pro parts on and I don’t want to go through all that again. Pro is the only one that comes in Super White too which is the color I really want.

    I'm confused. You're willing to spend more on the Pro than it would cost to retrofit a lower trim... so that you "don't have to put any money into" it?

    Clearly one of the Pro haters… have fun scouring forums for the TRD Pro suspension with very few miles, TRD Pro Foglights, TRD Pro grill, TRD Pro rims, TRD Pro Hood, TRD Pro Skid Plate, TRD Pro Seats, paint matched parts to replace the chrome front end, etc, paying up front and out of pocket for all those parts, and then repainting the truck in the color you want. I’ve got better things to do.

    Not a pro hater at all. Pros are awesome. Just trying to get my mindset into the best place to be able to be helpful.

    As an SR5 owner I totally understand the struggle with chrome, but it's not horribly difficult or costly to convert it. Either a platinum or a limited comes color matched, too.

    As for color availability, super white was available on almost every trim when I was shopping, so it's restriction to Pro only isn't accurate. I certainly wouldn't advocate repainting a truck, so if the color you want is a Pro only color then your hands are tied, but super white isn't locked that way. Wheels, skid, and fogs are easily added, and leather interiors are on "lower" trims with better features. The only thing Pros have that isn't easily added for less money is the Pro badging. If that's something you want , and there's nothing wrong with that, then get the Pro.

    Wind chill pearl is 10x more common on the Platinum and 1794 models than is super white and finding a new 2021 this late in 2021 is next to impossible with the limited production right now, but for the sake of argument, let’s live in fantasy land. Let’s say I found and bought a Platinum that was super white and it had the darker housing headlights. I’m seeing them for around $58k. Now let’s put a bunch of Pro parts on it.

    Fox struts and shocks = $2000 (if you can even find a used low mileage set)
    Skid plate = $400
    Fog lights = $400
    Hood = $500
    Rims = $800
    Grill = $300
    Total = $4400

    Again this is all assuming you can find a new Platinum or 1794 in super white with the dark housing headlights, plus this is only the core parts of the Pro. One could argue the list should include all the seats, bedsides, etc. Maybe I found a Platinum with everything except the darker headlights, well there goes another $1500. Well we’ve already surpassed the price I’m paying for a Pro AND all these parts would need to be sourced and paid for out of pocket. Do you have a spare $4k-$6k lying around to dump into a brand new truck? See where I’m going with this? I’ve already heavily researched what’s out there and considered the Platinum/1794 to Pro conversion like I did with my Tacoma. It quickly became a money pit to get it to the point of a stock Pro. I’m not going down that road again. Performance is more important than a few creature comforts which is why I already made up my mind after considering the possibilities. I just thought it was weird that the Pro excluded these amenities when the Tacoma Pro does not. So feel free to keep your snarky comments to yourself… especially when you’re wrong

    Yeah that’s what I did to my Tacoma and with its super high poor visibility front end it was worth its weight in gold!
