No again, there are laws protecting consumers. There are also standards in oils. The specific formula means nothing as long as it meets the standard....WS is a standard, in fact WS stands for "world standard" and Amsoil meets it. So does any other fluid that states it meets the WS standard.

An of course the companies try and steer you towards their brand of fluid, they make more money if you buy their stuff.

Yep, burden of proof is on them.
A manufacturer doesn't have a leg to stand on if it meets or exceeds.

I don't see anything on their website that shows me specifications comparing Amsoil ATF to Toyota WS. All they do say is that they recommend it.

I do know that our owners manual does state that Genuine Toyota WS ATF is the fluid to use. Not an equivalent as stated in many of the other fluids listed in the book. Every manufacture has their own tranny fluid because of tight tolerances, friction materials used, as well as the seal materials. They all have their own formulations of viscosity, detergents, and friction modifiers as well as many hours of testing. This is why manufacturers do not want or approve of third party lubricants in a warrantied transmission.

As for burden of proof, that is on you once they sample the fluid and find viscosity, detergents, and friction modifiers that are not found in WS. It will be your burden of proof to prove that these did not aid in destroying your transmission. I can guarantee that any of the aftermarket ATF manufactures that stated their product is "recommended for Toyota WS" will not meet you at the dealer to argue on your behalf.

You're correct, my apologies for further stirring the pot.
I was assuming trans fluid was like almost everything else.

That is what I am trying to clear up. I have nothing at all against aftermarket fluids, in fact I use them when I can. But I am well versed in the manufacturer spec ATF fluid area as this game has been going on for nearly two decades.

The language in the "Notice" looks pretty serious to me. A modern automatic transmission is not something that I am going to act like I know more about than the engineering team.

Motor oils, that is something different. There are additives that the EPA forbids "street certified" oils from having in them. If you want to run the best, the synthetic "track" or "off-road" oils that you would run in a dirt bike are some of the best.

"A fuel efficient automatic transmission fluid recommended for GM, Ford and Toyota transmissions where lighter viscosity oil is required. Provides the same excellent protection and performance as AMSOIL Signature Series Multi-Vehicle ATF. Recommended for vehicles requiring GM DEXRON® VI, Ford MERCON® LV and SP, Honda DW-1, Nissan Matic-S and Toyota WS fluid specifications."

It is a wording game to get you to buy their product. What you need to look for is approved and none of them are. Maybe Toyota will not run a fluid analysis on a blown transmission. I do know that Ford did it all of the time and if you were not running Mercon SP, warranty denied.

Outside of your warranty, run what you want. But why would you give a manufacture any reason to deny warranty coverage for such an expensive item?

The lack of atf cooler will certainly lower the life of my transmission, maybe I’m one of the few on here that tows for 650 miles round trip in 105-120 degrees when I tow my boat.

my original thought was to either….

    1. get an extended power train warranty. but Toyota would probably blame my future transmission failure on my larger than stock tires. And eventually 5.29 gears.

    2. Get a custom tune to lower the coolant temperature 10*f as well as use amsoil atf. Combined I imagine that would lower tranny temps and the oil is more resistant to heat.

Did you use S4 as Toyota recommends?

The Amsoil didn’t drop his temp; the trans cooler did. I have chasenicholas93’s cooling kit. I tow a 5k travel trailer and max temp I’ve seen is 203f pulling a strep grade for several miles. I use tow haul mode and D. My manual makes no mention of using S mode.

Mine does on pg 210. It's rather vague saying to maintain engine braking and battery charge the transmission must be in S4.

Found it and that makes sense on the engine braking piece as needed. I could see the battery charging but at 60 MPH in 5th it’s spinning 2000 RPM so the alternator is spinning 2-3x that. In D my truck rarely shifts into 6th but I only go 65-70 with the trailer on. My charging situation is unique as I use lithium batteries and a DC to DC charger to boost the voltage.

Exactly what jhon said , the cooler dropped my temps , I usually tow in S5 . The Amsoil fluid did change the shift quality IMO

$20.00 a year for a pretty good price break on anything they sell. The offer is on their web page.
