The 38 gallon tank does not read "empty" at 30 gallons. The low fuel light does come on at about 30 gallons, but the needle on the fuel gauge is still above the E.

Why do so many people have this concept of a "reserve"? If there is fuel in the tank, you can use it (it is not like we are operating an airplane). There is no reason to maintain a minimum amount of fuel in the tank. The fuel pump does not need fuel around it for cooling. The only way to damage the fuel pump is to run it dry. See these posts:

The low fuel light is there to inform you that you should start thinking about refueling the truck. The DTE display is just a gadget; it is an approximation of how far that you can go on your tank. The true estimated distance that you can go on a tank is by obtained by manually calculating your fuel mileage. I have done this with every vehicle that I have owned. For my tundra, I know that when the low fuel light comes on, I have about 112 miles left in the tank. I frequently drive about another 50 miles when the low fuel light comes on. The most that I have ever put in the tank is 35 gallons. Just be smart about when you refuel. Don't run your tank dry.

Thank you! The number of people who can't grasp this concept boggles my mind.

    OP,

I'm that guy who runs his vehicles down to " ass cheeks fully clenched" levels. Usually with my work provided van... As for my Tundra I go by miles driven after the Distance to Empty light comes on. I figure 10mpg is fairly accurate given I have significantly modded my truck.
Most I've filled up is 37 gallons. It just really, really hurts doing it all at once, like $183 worth of hurt! (Gas is $4.89/ gal in my neck of the woods)
Plus most gas stations max out at $125 per fill up and its a PITA to do a 2nd fill up. Been doing this since I've owned my truck in January 2017. No issues so far.

Ignore the crappy webpage I found it on, but it’s in the top left of page 92 in this picture. I’ve had it come on before.

    37 gallons? Nice.

I fuel up depending on convenience and proximity to a reasonably priced station. Around here prices can vary by $.30-$.40 a gallon, so it pays to stop at the lower priced stations, or stretch your tank a bit to get to one.

In my experience, my truck takes about 31 gallons just as the fuel light comes on. 35 is my personal best. so far. ;)

If I recall correctly, my '00 tundra had a 26.4 gallon tank, and I routinely put about 24 in it. My best was 25.3.
