Because Toyota chose to mount the sensors so low, I don’t think we’ll see any high clearance BSM-compatible bumpers. Ever.

Unfortunately no. I've not seen anyone post their experience with the SC product, here nor elsewhere.

I think the hole on the bumper will be an issue for the old sensor (3"x3") and possibly for the new sensor if the angle of the sensor bracket is wrong. In this design, pushing the sensor out closer to the aperture shouldn't be an issue (looks like you have approx an inch) for detection but preserving the correct angle will be critical. The rest can be fabbed to correct any issues just as long as the hole is big enough.

I don't have access to my TIS files at the moment. I don't recall the exact angle in which the sensors sits but I think it was about ~101 degrees (11 degrees tilted towards the rear); this angle can be calculated using the calibration manual; where is tells you to position the reflectors.

Not sure of the distance but the new sensor projects an arc of 140 degrees at a distance of ~160 feet and height of ~5 feet (sensor coverage I'm fairly sure of); old sensor had similar numbers except for depth was around ~80 feet or less. You get less than +/- 2 Degrees of error but may be smaller (I think its 1.4 or 1.6 in one of the documents on TIS but I remember the documents contradict each other in two places on this).

Yes I think it will be hard to pull off.

This is why I thinking of a way to stow them by tucking them up during off road. On road they have to be in that position at a specific angle so whatever the method there would need to be a return to zero when transitioning from off road back to on road.

This is a prerunner bumper that is very minimalist but accommodates the parking sensors, not sure how to integrate sensor back in safely:

The other issue will be adhering to federal regulations; I think there is a 28 - 30 inch max height for the rear bumper in addition to state laws.

Yea, you mentioned earlier that it appears that SC is designed for the ‘18+ sensor and not the pre ‘18. Since I have a ‘17, then SC is not even a possibility for me. BTW, I can’t see the sensor on my truck very well but what is the sensor Size and mounting position for the pre ‘18 sensors?

Not 100% on the new size but it looks 2x2 but probably larger. The position and angle are the same; both new and old use the same calibration procedures

I saw that pic befor and if I remember correctly that pic is of the new sensor mounted the same as OEM in a verticals fashion with the wires on the bottom. Are the older sensors (‘17 and below) mounted the same way with the wires in the bottom or is the old mounted sideways with the wires in the side as in the ICI pic you posted? We all agree thar all versions of the sensor must be mounted the same as the OEM for their perspective year.

Yes so the Line-Xed bumper is the new sensor in the correct orientation, the mounting points form a triangle pointing up, cable is on the opposite side hanging down.

The next post has ICI displaying the old sensor in its correct position, the mounting points form a triangle pointing to the front of the vehicle and the cable connection point points rear.

Edit: Looking at the ICI, the sensor looks thick so it probably needs the space and the SC mount accounts for the thickness.

FCC filing for the both sensors:

Thanks for the input, it is very helpful. I may pull the trigger on the ICI since it provides proper mounting for the old sensor and give it a try. Worst case scenario I can always put the stock bumper back on and then sell the ICI to you

According to the ICI thread on TT they have a good return policy. If not we can always smelt it into something useful like a "Dead horse" award for the next person to start a "how best MPG?" or "Missing Cooler" thread..maybe even a tiny "participation" trophy for all the Tundras members.
I think you can get it to work via trial and error. If you haven't read through the issues they had with ICI I would read through the thread. Not sure how the guy got aluminum to "rust" however :monocle:. Reading the issues he had, its difficult to pin down what triggered the errors since he had it operational for several months; my guess is vibration and possibly moisture in the connector. I would vibration dampen for sure on an all metal mount; maybe dielectric on the connectors. The tricky part is getting the position and angle off of your current set up and preserving it for the new bumper; the angle will be more important.

The CBI design actually looks very similar to ICI bumper too bad CBI doesn't have their $#!+ together yet.

I think that based on the age of that thread, they were training about the previous generation of ICI bumper that was steel. There are at least one thread in here talking about the poor finish quality on the steel ICI bumpers (front specifically). Then the company seemed to disappear. Then reappeared with the aluminum versions

I could see that, looks like they hit SEMA in 18 with their aluminum version:
    https://youtu.be/16-YRCND1fQ

It was also a snarky comment on rusting aluminum (yes it can corrode but it has no iron)

Rainman beat me to it, but as he said that thread involved the previous generation of the bumper. Hopefully the aluminum version is better. An expensive beta test though.

Good information. Clearly C4 had some issues with their bumper. I do like the Ironman bumper for it would match my n-fab front bumper, however it is not BSM compatible. It only supports the parking sensors. As of yet, I think the ICI is the best choice.

By the way, I spoke with CBI again and they are hoping to announce their rear bumper on Black Friday. They did say that it will only be offered in steel so it’s going to be heavy. Looked at it again and it’s very similar to the ICI which is aluminum. Still thinking about pulling the trigger on the ICI.

Yeah the Ironman isn't BSM compatible at this time; I was considering it for retrofitting if the company doesn't have plans to integrate BSM. The smaller sensors may be a go, the space looks too small for the older sensors however.

Good news about CBI but it is a shame it is steel only.

I finally pulled the trigger on the ICI rear bumper. They were offering 10% off for Halloween which brought their price down to more in line with the others in the same category. It's in inventory so I should have it in about a week. The CBI bumper that they hope to announce next month I'm sure will be good. However, it's going to be twice the weight, about the same price, plus I'll have to wait 5 months to get it. After thinking about it, seemed like a no brainer. Will post install details.

Look what showed up today. ICI shipped fairly quickly but the freight delivery was slow. The “final mile” agent took nearly a week to contact me after they took hand off.

The install will have to wait a few weeks for I have a couple of long trips coming up and I don't want to risk the potential of messing up the BMS for these trips. Probably dive into it mid December.

However, since the box was so large and the wife was complaining about it taking up garage space, I did unbox and inspect it. ICI did a great job in the packaging and shipping for it was well protected. Here are my thoughts:

    • Great packaging
    • The bumper looks clean and well designed
    • The craftsmanship looks top notch. Bends and Welds are clean and look professional
    • No built in license plate lighting inserts, but uses 2 off the shelf LED license plate screw lights.. Not sure how good these lights arebut there are many options offered on Amazon if they ever go out.
    • Mounting basically uses the same mounting points as the OEM bumper. It attaches using bolts on the top and bottom of each frame. These bolts are not heavy duty so I completely understand why tow hook mounts were not built into the bumper. I actually applaud ICI for NOT including tow hook mounts even for astatic or ornament purposes. Any attempt to use as a recovery point would rip this bumper off.
    • All in all, I'm pleased with the appearance and is a Nice replacement for the OEM bumper.

    Looks good. Excited for you.

Aluminum will give under impact but here is how this other company handled their built in crumple zone on a front bumper (12:00 Mins):

At this rate the metal in the coins may soon be worth more than the coins themselves.
