I noticed on my Tundra the other day that the paint is discolored along the inside curves of my hood. It doesn't have a different texture than the surrounding sections, but it's along the entire length of the 'U' in the middle of the hood.

Surely this isn't a loss of clear coat, right? Any advice on how to correct it? If it's just a discoloration of the clear coat, I'll probably leave it until I get it professionally detailed at some point - just want to be sure the paint won't start coming up.

It is an outside car, but I'm very careful with keeping sap/bird droppings off of it (using detailing spray and a clean microfiber cloth). I wash it at least once a month and apply Griot's Ceramic Spray on quarterly.

Not sure what is going on. Hard to tell from the pics. Looks iridescent like when ceramic products flash or when certain soaps (like Rain X) are drying. The later should wipe off while drying.

I know there is a streaking issue with the Griots 3 in 1 in humid climates, you can mitigate this by applying the product on a damp towel and then wiping it on the vehicle vice spraying directly on the panels.

Not sure that helps your situation out any but it doesn't look like an issue with clear coat unless something was applied during the paint curing process. I know there has been a rise in complaints regarding the 2021s having nagging issues, given the Rona situation its understandable and expected.

Agree with @Saltyhero13 , looks to be some flash or smudge from the ceramic spray. I have had similar things happen with beadmaker top coat. You really have to make sure to apply evenly, especially when humid. I find spraying the topcoat on my microfiber applicator to dampen it before applying on the truck gives the best coverage and finish.

I have a black truck, so things like that, waterspots, etc can really show. I have found the best look and protection by using both a wax/sealant and then a topcoat of Beadmaker(or in your case the griots product).

I will do a good wash and dry, then use meguiars ultimate. That offers great protection, shine and very deep color. Then the following week when I wash I will dry and follow up with a top coat of beadmaker. I wait a week and do a wash before the topcoat because I find I get less streaks and better application of the topcoat. I also find that using the topcoat frequently, like every 2 weeks can induce color variation or steaks as the topcoat builds up. Truck stays fresher looking longer with the one proper application vs several.

So doing that process on my truck described above keeps the truck protected, beading water, with deep black color for 3-4 months even with my weekly washing. If you wash less frequently, could last 4-6 months.

I think griots is a good product, but like beadmaker, I do not see it as a stand alone finish, rather a topcoat and when used like that they can really extend the protection and keep the truck looking amazing longer.

Thanks you two! I definitely think y'all are on to something (as I have noticed this on the hood of my wife's black 4Runner as well). This flashing won't negatively affect the paint, right?

I might try to find a good weekend to clean it and reapply soon as it gets cooler and (the damn Georgia) humidity drops off a bit.

The flashing I'm talking about is usually with ceramic coatings (different from the sprays). As the carrier solvent evaporates a rainbow effect occurs briefly indicating its time to wipe and level the product. Griots doesn't flash but is prone to streak in humidity. Some of the other detailers and enthusiasts work with the product more, they may be able to tell you how to correct it. Wiping it with more Griots should correct it but it doesn't appear to be working in your case.

Don't let that discourage you from using it, its a good product just has some correctable issues in humidity.

I'll try a respray along that area next time I wash the car and let y'all know if that fixes it.

The more I think about it, I may give it more 'attention' (product) than it needs in that area because it's so satisfying to wipe along that bend.

No, when you hit it with some wax/polish it should clean right up.

You have probably seen this, very long thread but good info and it does talk about streaking, drying, etc.

I think everyone is correct, I saw a lot of that when I was using the same ceramic spray on my white hood. It was exacerbated by any moisture on the paint, so you may have had some in that small recess on your hood too.

I was able to get rid of it but had to buff with a clean towel.

Just a quick update - finally got around to washing the car yesterday and added a few light sprays of 3-in-1 on the hood. The discoloration is now gone!

    Thanks y'all!
