I was an industrial pipefitter for about 8 years or so. Main work was in refineries and chemical plants for new projects or plant turnarounds. It's a lucrative field if you put in all the hours. 7/12s for weeks to months on end. You could also get into commercial fabrication (plumbing and such) .. however I don't know too much about that.

I'm also not too familiar with the union aspect of it, as I worked for different contractors throughout the years. If you have some knowledge of pipe fabrication already I suggest going to test for your NCCER and NCCER+. It looks good getting on with a company and will increase your payrate.

All depends on where you live, if you're willing to relocate or travel and stay on the road

Yeah I don’t have any experience with fabrication of pipes. I’ve done some odds and ends here and there. I just need something more for my mental stimulation. It’s rough for me to just sit and do the seat time with no aspirations of being promoted or being able to venture on my own. I understand the work and hours could be more hectic but meh I’m up for it. I’m trying to hopefully get into the union here so I can do the schooling and learn the trade.

Never too late for a change.. I personally got burnt out with it. Not trying to stray you in any direction, but it can get repetitive like anything else. So I definitely know the feeling of needing something new. Try it, I mean what do you have to lose... even if you don't stay in the field it's a skill that will always be valuable. Work around the house, busted pipes, installing new home equipment.. things like that.

If your in need of a more mental stimulating type of job, I may recommend plant operations or a process operator or engineer. I transferred to this field a few years ago and I definitely still enjoy it. Making different products out of straight raw natural gas, you have to be on your toes... lots of volatile product going through the pipes that you want to keep IN THE PIPE if you know what I mean.

Yeah I like danger I understand where you do mean some jobs will feel repetitive. For my me I’m 30 and a 401k will not cut it. I did wire edm before and before that was in the navy seabees. I like using my hands and my head. To me a challenge is good to help you think. I also understand anything can get old, I would like to know the proper procedures of fixing my pipes in the future though. Never hurt to have another skill set.

I would recommend steamfitters union in lieu of plumbing. Higher pay and far less dirty jobs. Probably less applicable to fix things around the house or side jobs though.
