Yeah so you’ll just need to get the truck weighed, take that ticket to the licensing office, and have them change it. Then get reimbursed for a significant chunk of that $680 using the Vehicle/Vessel Refund Request form.

Nice. Now I have to just figure out how much weight I need to account for to reach 6K+ since my vehicle is bone stock. Fast food only "diet", heavy clothing padded w/ useless stuff, steel toe boots, water bottles, hidden slabs of exercise equipment weights & tools, full tank of gas, and thick steel skidplates for starters. Hmm...might have to get creative.

It doesn't take much! And nobody is checking you either, I could've had an elephant in the back of the truck and gotten my weight (I went to Cadman).

Yeah, what was said after you posted is true, nobody checks. Put sumthin in the cab, or if you have a tonneau cover, in the bed. But honestly I think more Tundras are over than under. For what it’s worth, it only cost like 15 bucks, so even just going to check what you need will be saved with the first set of new tabs

Agreed with what everyone said. No one checks what’s in the rig. You can also roll on the scale and it you’re under leave and come back with more weight. Don’t even need to pay the $15 to see the weight.

Success! This forum just saved me $366! Truck is 2018 Crewmax 4x4 SR5, 26 gal tank. Add ons are NFab steps, Tyger T5 hard tri-fold tonneau cover, rear sway bar, air bags, stock size bfg KO2 load range E tires which are heavier than stock, and some miscellaneous stuff in cab. Full tank of gas, no one in truck, and weighed 6,360 pounds. Took scale ticket to dol, and lady didn't even give me a hard time. Says she's been doing these a lot. She even gave me the refund form to take with me, me which I just put in mail. Old tabs $471, new amount $105.

As for the payload, yeah...I figure if I had firewood, generator, etc in the bed, and wife/kids, I have less than 500 lbs payload left. Been doing the "build your own" on the Ford site lately (F350, 6.2 gas), but trying to hold off to see what the new Tundra offers. If not much better than my 18, will be really hard to stay with Tundra when we get a travel trailer next year. Time will tell...

Thanks for this OP! Saved me $. I weighed in at 6480 lbs. 2017 crewmax with hard tonneau, 285/75 18's, front and rear trd sways, ADD light steps, rci front skid, fab fours rear bumper and some tools /recovery gear in the bed. Full tank of gas.
Does anyone know if the 6k weight is for trucks only, or can we get a SUV weighed too?

Is there any way to pay the reduced tax at initial purchase, or am I going to have to eat it for the first year?

Don't think there's a way at initial purchase but you can still request the refund shortly after initial purchase once you go and get it weighed.

Apparently you also need some other form to sign that says “what’s changed”.

Edit: at least at the office I went to. I will try a different office.

Edit: I called the state dol and they told me that technically you don’t even need a weight slip - but wouldn’t hurt to bring one from the dump, a rock quarry, or certified scale - and don’t need your title or other forms.

Edit: went to courthouse dol office instead and they updated it without issue. However, she said I have to update the gross weight by 150%, which pushed it to the 12,000 pound bracket. This didn’t increase the weight fee and I don’t have to pay the sound transit or city rta tax, saving me $55 less $12 scale fee, so $43 this year. Make sure your truck weighs less than 6650 so it doesn’t bump up the GVW to 12,000. Funny thing my DCLB would easily weigh over 6000 pounds with just the bedliner, tonneau, and running boards and full tank of gas. I didn’t need my other “accessories” at all.

THANK YOU!!! Got my time to renew letter from DOL and saw $580…. Took my truck to Love’s CAT weigh station in Fife, nothing to extra, tonneau cover, side steps, rear sway bar and filled the tank and weighed 6160. Got my weight slip, took it to DOL in Fife, updated registration and paid my $110.50 tabs!!!
So thankful for reading this thread.

I told a buddy about this weight exemption. He has an F150 (same config as my crewmax) He just took it to the scale, it weighed 5200#

Damm, I think I know where our crappy mileage comes from

Just went to a scale and got a weight slip. Going to attempt to update the weight and will see what happens. Seems like you just walk in and say you want to change your vehicles curb weight and here’s some (non mandatory) evidence from a scale. Edit -> Was not accepted at the place I went to.

You've got to go to a local certified scale. A list in your area can be found here: https://www.dol.wa.gov/vehicleregistration/scales.html

Just an FYI, do NOT wait to do this shit. I put mine in in 2021 and still haven’t received money back yet. The good news tho is I’m not overcharged each subsequent year, but they owe me just under $700 (insane) and they don’t know when I’ll get it. I’ve called, which they keep telling me to do to get updates, and they tell me each time what month/year they’re working on. I believe last I checked they were on December 2020, but since Covid postponed the work and WA held off reopening far longer than most, I don’t expect to see my loot until probably 2024. Good enough for gov’t work, as they say

Oh they were okay with the scale slip it was more they refused to change the scale weight unless “Toyota gave a letter of consent” or something bizarre like that since it would make the payload capacity too low lol. Likely need to find a different place to go ask, given I was likely getting the runaround there. I did see on another nonTundra forum that WA DOL may have changed the rules on scale weight changes.

Oh that’s definitely BS. I’d challenge that, they have no right to refuse it. In fact, while it would be more work than it’s worth, they could probably be forced to answer for why they’re going against written law. I went to a licensing place in Burien, called Siler Licensing Agency, on 3rd. If you’re anywhere near that, use them. They actually told me how to do it, and they had zero issue with my slip nor any questions. Besides, I think the scale weight listed by Toyota is over 6k anyway? Could need that fact-checked, but not sure why the Tunny is listed so low

Roger that will go try them out! Yeah the whole situation where I went was just pretty weird, seemed like the lady was trying to find a way to get me to leave by throwing out red herrings. I’ve been there quite a bit before so was surprised. One of those never know who you’re gonna get on the other side of the glass situations.
