Going from 4Hi to 4Lo requires stopping?

I just bought a 2018 Tundra Limited Ed. I was reading in the owners manual that to go from 4Hi to 4Lo, you have to stop, shift in to neutral and to got 4Lo.

This seems to be several years behind in tech, sort of like stopping, getting out of the vehicle, and twisting the wheel hub.

Is this correct, you have to stop and then go to Neutral and switch?

    Thanks!

Yep, seems normal to me --- that is to keep those without commonsense from shifting out of 4 HI at 50mph into 4LO -- bad things happen

I've had instances where I was going uphill and needed to move from 4Hi to 4Lo, at a very slow MPH, but to have to completely stop, go to neutral and 4Lo would make the vehicle lose momentum that is needed to keep moving without starting off spinning again. That's why it seems strange to me.

    What he said.
Frankly I'm impressed you can shift from 2H to 4H up to 62mph!

True that. In those cases you start in 4L at the bottom of the last dip.

For the hills you mentioned, you just start in 4Lo and crawl up. Less wear and tear. Normal 4x4 operation in my experience, as I don't think I've ever driven anything with a 4Lo that could be engaged on the fly.

It’s been my experience a 4LO situation rarely ever involves speed and momentum. Every truck I’ve ever owned required me to stop and go to N to engage 4LO.

Maybe so. I guess I have had this situation occur so few times maybe I'm not remembering that I actually had to stop to go to 4Lo. Anyway, I see the point. Follow the guide.

I'm still struggling with why mine won't grab reverse in 2Hi while the cruise is set at 80. It only works when I stop first and then change gears. So difficult!!

probably better that if you can't get traction, backup, switch to 4low then begin the climb again with your momentum.

Hey OP, seriously, do yourself a favor and exercise that stop-neutral-4lo-neutral-4hi-2hi routine on a loose surface minimum 12-15 times per year. Get in a few miles during each exercise. If not, the actuators may stop working leaving you SOL.

Stopping to drop into 4H is old tech, stopping to go from 4H to 4L is normal. I've owned multiple Fords, GMCs and Nissan trucks in the past 20 years and they're all like that. It is more than just engaging the front driveline, you've got to change the gears in the transfer case.

I’ve heard a truck go from 4H to 4L while moving once. It rocked backwards as it was engaging. Sounded like a spoon in a garbage disposal and he needed a new transfer case, not a fun sound.

Ram is on the bleeding edge of tech and even my 2019 2500 required you to stop, shift to neutral, and then shift to 4 low. Totally normal operation for a 4x4. My Tundra is a much better daily driver than any Ram.

Mine will go into 4lo easier if I engage 4hi first.

I can not recall any 2 speed transfer case equipped trucks that did not require stopping to shift into low range?

I had a college roommate that had a Olds Jetstar with a 394. That thing was a beast. One day on the toll road in PA going 70 mph one of his backseat passengers hood on a coat hooked on the T shifter. He pulled it and dropped it in to 1st gear. I was surprised it did not blow up.
