I smoked one of these this weekend, E.P. Carrillo Pledge Prequel.

I'm definitely an amateur at this, but I would have to say it definitely lived up to the hype, Cigar Aficionado's 2020 Cigar of the Year.

Yes, a top shelf smoke for sure. I have a box sleeping nicely in my coolidor.
I plan on breaking them open in 5 years.

BTW, here is the steal of the year IF you act now.
    Perdomo "Tenth Anniversary" Maduro.
Just came out and it took the International tobacco association's top cigar of 2021.
Why is this important? because it is picked by all the cigar makers in the world.
Not involved in marketing or magazines; just the pros who make these things.
They are CHEAP right now because hardly anyone who runs magazines has ITA ads in it.
I got a fiver and tried em with my brother the Cuban cigar snob and he loved em also.

Just realized there's a cigar thread here. I started this hobby years ago. But once I went Cuban, I've rarely gone back. For people who've only tried new worlds, I would try it at least once. Although it takes quite a bit more patience and commitment due to Cubans being sold unaged and nothing I buy can be smoked right away, I feel it's worth the time. I keep it all in my already overcrowded Audew 150 count. Kick myself everyday for not buying the 300.

PS don't laugh at the Factory Smokes, I give them out to my non smoker friends when they want to try a cigar out but there's no way in hell I'm letting them light up an Opus.

    Ahem, Lets see here.
    Padron Humidor - 90 cigars
300 pc Humidor - 300 pcs various brands nothing under 3 years old
50 pc Humidor - 45 pcs Tatuaje, My Father & Illusione
Coolidor #1 - 35 cases various brands, nothing under 3 years old
Coolidor #2 - 27 cases various brands, nothing under 7 years old
Between the Coolidors every #1 cigar since 2015.
I just picked up two more cases as posted earlier above and I scored a TUBO ten pc of Partagas's rare Cameroon offering that just came out.
Retired now but thinking of opening up a Cigar bar.
There's a large undercurrent of Cigar smokers that need somewhere to go.
In my area, one nice place in San Francisco and one place in Monterey.
PS. My little brother does the Cuban thing and we get into nice "discussions" over what is better.
This last year, Cuba has had severe weather problems so the prices will go up and the availability will drop.

Unfortunately my humidor has been getting low. Once the move happens next week I will start filling it back up.

Smoking a gaaja by Mbombay this morning. It's been aging in humidor for roughly 10 months. If you haven't tried this cigar I highly recommend it. Goes great with a good coffee.

I have seen them a number of times but, never tried one. Connecticut shade wrapper?

Yes it's a connecticut, I don't think it's shade grown but I'm not sure. They also have a maduro variation of this stick. And even though I like Maduro, I wanted to try the original that got so much praise.

Sometimes with a highly multi flavored cigar like Padrons, even a great maduro wrapper will dominate and hide some of the unique aspects of the binder and fillers.
I love Maduro but sometimes I order natural wrappers just for that reason.

    The blend
Without further ado, let’s break down the Partagas Limited Reserve Decadas and see what this cigar brings to the table.

    Blend and Origin
As mentioned above, the common denominator with the Partagas Limited Reserve Decadas has been using aged tobaccos which are all at least ten years old and the Decadas 2020 is no exception. The Cameroon wrapper has a minimum of 11 years of age. The San Andres tobacco in the binder and filler is from a 1997/98 crop, and the Dominican Piloto Cubano tobacco in the filler is also 11 years old. Production for the Partagas Limited Reserve Decadas 2020 is handled out of General Cigar Dominican in Santiago, Dominican Republic.

    Wrapper: Cameroon (2008-2009)
    Binder: San Andres (1997-1998)
Filler: Dominican Piloto Cubano (2009) and San Andres (1997-98)
    Country of Origin: Dominican Republic
    Factory: General Cigar Dominicana

    Vitolas Offered
The Partagas Limited Reserve Decadas 2020 is offered in one size – a 6 3/4 x 43 Dalia. This is a size that was known as the No. 3 in the original Partagas Limited Reserve Decadas line. As mentioned, each cigar is packaged in an individual tube. There are ten tubes packaged per box. The cigar itself is a limited production release.

    Tester results from Cigar Coop.
    Pre-Light Draw
Prior to lighting up the Partagas Limited Reserve Decadas 2020, a straight cut was used to remove the cap. Once the cap was removed it was on to the pre-light draw phase. The cold draw delivered a mix of coffee, citrus, and earth. Overall, this was a satisfactory pre-light draw experience. It was now time to light up the Partagas Limited Reserve Decadas 2020 and see what the smoking phase would have in store.

    Tasting Notes
The Partagas Limited Reserve Decadas 2020 opened up with a mix of cocoa, citrus, earth, and white pepper notes. During the first third the cocoa and citrus moved into the forefront. Both notes alternated in intensity with the cocoa notes providing the edge. The combination of cocoa and citrus delivered sweetness early on. The earth and white pepper settled in the background. On the retro-hale was a combination of citrus and red pepper varietal.

Later in the first third, the citrus started to become sourer. As the Partagas Limited Reserve Decadas 2020 moved through the second third, the citrus moved into the forefront. The cocoa moved into the background and joined the earth, citrus, and white pepper. There was a slight baker’s spice note that emerged during the second third too.

By the midway point, the cocoa and earth notes in the background both dissipated and were replaced by a coffee note. At the same time, there was an increase in the pepper spice. Going into the final third, the citrus notes still had the edge. The pepper and coffee notes were close secondary notes with some residual baker’s spice notes remaining. This is how the cigar experience closed for the Partagas Limited Reserve Decadas 2020. The resulting nub was slightly soft to the touch and cool in temperature.

    Burn
The Partagas Limited Reserve Decadas 2020 performed excellently when it came to the burn. The cigar maintained a straight burn path and straight burn line with minimal touch-ups needed along the way. The resulting ash was on the firm side with a silver-gray color. Meanwhile, the burn rate and burn temperature were ideal.

    Draw
The draw of the Partagas Limited Reserve Decadas 2020 also performed excellently. This is a cigar that had a touch of resistance. If you have read many of my reviews on Cigar Coop, you will know this is a positive in my book.

    Strength and Body
The Partagas Limited Reserve Decadas 2020 delivered a medium strength, medium-bodied smoke. There wasn’t much in the way of variance in the strength and body along the way. When comparing both attributes, the body maintained a slight edge over the strength

"As always, take any review with a grain of salt as your review counts more because you are smoking the cigar.
Those that like Cameroon cigars jump right in." - Nowhereman

Sorry, the people next door work here at the GC.
Bartender & his wife is Banquet director.
Funny, "Mike" the Bartender smokes a pack a day but doesn't like cigars.
    Doesn't know what he's missing

was digging around in a lower shelf of my 300 cigar humi and found this; Illusione Garagiste
This girl has been in the humi for at least 4 years. Look at the fine "Plume" on her. :)
The burn was superb and she kicks ass in the Nic bomb category, gotta eat before smokin her.

I smoked one of these last night: Rocky Patel, Decade, Robusto.

It was good, but not great. I don't understand the 95 rating.

I thought the E.P.Carrillo Pledge I mentioned above was so much better.

I would love to hear some thoughts from someone who isn't as big a neophyte as myself.

Thats what's interesting about cigars. They effect everyone a little different.
I've had a ton of those over the last seven years and I think the rating is a few notches high for 95 as it cannot compete against some of the best Padrons who test out a little less.
It's still a great cigar with some complexity, smoke output, draws real good but IMO, is slightly one dimensional which is not a bad thing.
I'd give it a solid 90 - 91 rating though and if offered by someone, would smoke it anytime.
It's Maduro wrapper is seasoned real nice and the overall aging is great coming out of the box.
One of RPs best of all time and still is a good seller. ( I posted earlier about a new RP that just came out; RP 10th anniversary Maduro) Try one of those.
The E.P. is much more complex and that might be why you prefer that one.
Both are Maduro offerings and initial aging is very good with E.P.
If you seem to migrate to Maduro stuff, try a Padron Maduro offering or a CLE Prieto IF you can find them. (the CLE)
IMHO the best Maduros made to date.
I was so impressed by the CLE offering years ago I purchased a few boxes of them and put them away.
They have now been "sleeping" for a number of years and will be just Heaven to light up.

I'll definitely add the Maduro to my list.

I agree with everything you said about the Decade, particularly the part about it being one dimensional, and that a 90-91 rating is probably a little more realistic.

My review would've been something along the lines of: moderately strong, yet smooth, one dimensional, but in a good way, and if someone said this was going to be my go-to cigar for the foreseeable future, I would be okay with it.

I read a review of this cigar online and they started talking about it tasting like bread, wood and spice. I'm not even close to being able to make those distinctions.

So to start I didn't read all 18 pages guys but do any of you smoke anything with Perique tobacco in them? I am from St James Parish in Louisiana. I grow about 4000 plants a year which yields about 1200-1500 lbs. of leaf. I sell to Mark Ryan of Daughters & Ryan. If you have never heard of Perique just Google it.

EDIT: I did grow it. Ida wiped out my drying barns and with the crazy price of lumber it's not looking good.

That is what a lot of people fall down on.
When they talk about "tasting like" they really aren't saying exactly like """" in most cases. What they are referring to is the sensation of something you can relate to in taste like.
The easiest ones are spice / pepper / leather / earth.
My favs as most know are Padrons. I call em a dessert sticks because when smoked correctly, they explode in many many flavor runs.
Chocolate, spice, earth, pepper (black) and sometimes white, I can go on and on.
One thing that has worked for me over the years as it does take time to "acquire" this capability, is to not take a full mouth load.
Just a (normal) pull. Then let some of it; just a bit work it's way up into your sinus cavity which is called "retro hale".
You have a ton more receptors in your nose / sinus area than your mouth.
Don't let the cigar over heat as that will ruin it a lot so one pull every 45 seconds would be about perfect.
Have a drink with it, doesn't have to be anything specific ; wine, Whiskey, Rum, even water. Just something to clean your pallet once in a while.
Certain cigars just seem to go good with certain spirits. Experiment, there are no hard n fast rules.
And try different brands, sizes when you can. You might find that certain flavor types come at you based on sizes.
My most flavorful cigars have always been Panatelas, Lonsdales and Lanceros. Why, because the binder / wrapper are a bigger portion of the build and deliver the majority of the flavor profile compared to the filler.
Not always but, most of the time.
Still, I have a ton of robustos in my collection because that size in general is the size that fits my smoke time nicely,

That cool, I'll look for that brand to try em out. Sorry about your barns though.
The cost of wood is ridiculous today.
I've seen some of the better farms for various brands using what looks like cinder block for the walls with an air gap at top, then a wood ceiling or roof.

Just did a DD on your tobacco. Pretty impressive stuff and rare.
Only thing is I don't smoke cigs or pipes.
I would love to see a few of the better cigar makers use some of this in their blends though.
