Is it best to order from a smaller dealership with fewer orders or a larger dealership with more orders and a larger allocation?

I'd recommend calling as many as you can to see what your options are. It seems they are all approaching this thing differently.

I think Fo Lo is right, each dealership will approach this differently. Find the right one for you and read the fine print.

I'm on the list with 3 larger dealerships who are higher up on the sales numbers in the KC Region (top 5). More sales, more allocations. There are quite a few "TRD Pro only" folks on the list. I'm leaning more towards the 1794 at this point mainly bc the camp is all over the Pro and I think it might get old to look at at 75,000 miles.

actually its the western region that kansas is in now. they used to be named after a city or state but they moved away from that naming convention to be more PC.

I would approach as many as you are willing to drive to. I ended up buying from a dealership that makes their money from the volume bonuses from Toyota. As a result, I paid less for mine than at least one local Toyota dealer pays for their new trucks. Of course this was pre-Covid, but the same principle applies today.

yeah my local dealer moved to this volume bonus per quarter than trying to nickel and dime each customer. they actually make more money by volume sales than the old format by a lot, they wouldnt tell me the numbers, go figure :)

and the sales people make more money, flat $250 per financed vehicle and $350 per lease then a bonus if they hit the 2 tiers of sales per month/quarter
