How stout is the tailgate?

Will be looking to get a gun safe in the near future, and wondering how sturdy our tailgates are? The ones I'm looking at are approx. 550-600 lbs. Can our tailgates handle this? Figuring to lean cabinet against tailgate, tip over and slide in on its back (with cardboard underneath). Reverse procedure to get it back out. Will the tailgate take this kind of weight, or am I better off renting a uhaul trailer to get it home?

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
Can’t speak for a gun safe, but years ago a friend of mine got a flat tire on his HD Roadking and rode it off a retaining wall into the bed of my Tundra via the tailgate and then back out of the bed on another retaining wall near his house. The bike weighed probably every bit of 700lbs and my buddy probably is close to 290lbs.

    Did no damage.

not sure what the weight limit is, but if two or three stout dudes sitting on the tailgate having a beer caused it to break it would be on every 3rd post on here. The new ones don't have a transmission cooler and it doesn't cause the transmission to fail and its on like every page :)

I am sure you'd be fine....lots load 4wheelers and heavy bikes into the bed.

Definitely not stout enough to lean a 600lb safe up against. The tailgate is completely hollow with little to no structural support inside of it. It would bend like a wet noodle

Agreed, the tailgate is a lot stouter than you might suspect.

I would add a piece of plywood to spread the weight out over more surface area, but I would feel comfortable doing it with that.

Agree, I am in the tile installation business. We regularly stack 8 to 10 boxes of heavy tile on my tailgate when we unload by hand plus the weight of one man, probably 700 to 800 pounds total. Done this for years and I have never damaged a tailgate.

I moved heavy stuff by taking the tailgate off and pushing things directly onto the bed floor

Yes, do this. Get a trailer with a ramp, roll it to the front of the trailer, tie down securely, roll off at destination. VERY VERY worth the time and cost for a rental.

Oh and the appliance hand trucks are way harder to use than a standard heavy-duty hand truck with large rubber tires. Just make sure the tires are aired up, use a ratchet strap or two to strap the safe to it, and away you go. If it’s a large safe, use furniture dollies and still do the strap thing. I did the above with a refrigerator by myself and I’ll never move an appliance any other way if I can help it.

Use a packing blanket or two, to keep the safe from rubbing on anything to include the strap if you want to make sure the finish isn’t damaged.

Plenty stout, like said above a sheet of 3/4 plywood would be good insurance. I have had 800lbs of redi mix on mine spread out over the area.

Even if my tailgate is strong enough, I'd still have a heavy ass safe delivered, dropped off, brought inside, put exactly where I want it, tip the delivery folks , and be done with it....o_O

Correct. The delivery and installation fee is money well spent, and wisely spent.

Itll work. I moved a Liberty 32 last week that weighed in at over 600 pounds. Safe of this size arent hard to move. I moved it out and down stairs by myself and a set of hand trucks. Me and my brother moved it into his house.

I loaded a 650lb steel workbench in the same way as you're describing. Leaned it against the tailgate, lifted the rear and slid it forward.
Reverse method getting it out. It kinda trashed the carpet padding I have on the inside of the tailgate, but otherwise no issues with the tailgate itself.

I just remembered, our local safe vendor offers relocation service (moving a safe) for $100. I plan to use that service when I move. You might want to check to see if that kind of service is available in your area.

DO NOT LOAD THAT SAFE ON THAT FLIMSY TAILGAGE!!!!! Search my name on this forum I have pics of what inside tailgate which is nothing, no support beams nothing just a hollow tin metal frame with huge opening on the inside. Mine got bent loading a Honda Foreman ATV which weighs 680lbs with big fat tires. Tundra tailgate is the worst on market.

Trust issues keep me from paying for delivery of this item. A friend of my brother did that and miraculously his home was broken into less than 2 weeks after delivery. Only thing targeted was that gun safe, nothing else in the house was touched.

Leaning toward the Uhaul option as that sounds much safer/easier on my back.

In that case the suggestion to rent a trailer with a ramp is the best solution. Tailgate strength notwithstanding, the ease of loading and unloading a 600-700lb steel box will be much higher on a lower flatbed trailer with a ramp.

per my experience, i sometimes haul golf carts on my bed, which is 5.5ft so one pair of tires have to sit on my tailgate. We're talking about 1000lbs overall, so maybe 600-700lbs on the tailgate but only distributed at the tire contact spots. After about 3-4 years, tailgate has indentions from the weight, not heavily damaged, but not exactly straight anymore either! Always good to tow or evenly distribute the weight across the bed and the tailgate if possible. I looked into the stronger steel rods that hold the tailgate up as opposed to relying on the OEM cables, but have been told that they dont make it for Tundras because the tailgates are weak. haha

I've moved my double wide Centurion safe a few times, lots of bikes, and my entire home gym once.....from the bed of a Tacoma.

Tundra will be fine especially since it's just an occasional thing, not a daily use issue.

Oh and definitely get a good appliance dolly.

You gotta love the range of responses in this thread.

I personally vote pay someone else to do it or rent a trailer. Last time I helped move a large gun safe, we borrowed a tilt deck trailer and that was by far the best decision we made that day.

It's all about how said weight is distributed. I actually had a good sized stack of OSB in my truck a few weeks ago hanging out the back. I was going up a small hill and my straps broke. The entire stack of 46 sheets slid back and amazingly landed still stacked in the roadway. Still can't believe it didn't spread all over. Anyway, my point is the tailgate had a significant load on it momentarily and I think the cables may have actually stretched a little, but nothing else sustained any damage except for the end of the bottom sheet of OSB that took the blow from the road. Fun times!

I got a new gun safe back in July and it weighed right around 500 pounds.

Didn’t have my Tundra yet I had my 2017 Tacoma. So I’d think the Tundra tailgate would be as strong if not stronger than the Tacoma’s tailgate.

Anyway I had 3 guys help cart it out and we tipped it onto the tailgate so like a foot of the huge box was on the tailgate and we all easily lifted it level with the tailgate/bed and slid it in at the same time.

Once I got home it was just me. So I backed up to the garage and slid it out enough to where it just started to tip and it gently slid to the ground. It was probably at a 45 degree angle and I lifted it up then rocked it back and forth from side to side until it was all the way in the garage.

I was surprised on how easily it was to muscle around and slowly but surely move! Then later with a helper and handcart it was placed in its proper final placed.

So if the tailgate on my Tacoma held up I’d think a Tundra would do even better.

Thirded. Some companies have some very fancy dollies that make moving them down stairs an easy and effortless process.

And if you're worried someone will break in, just spend the whole time the delivery guys are there talking about how you'll use it to store your favorite POGs
