I know this isn't a Tundra specific question, but I'm looking for help.

I'm in Florida, my brother lives in Austin. In the event that it'd be easier to get a truck in Texas than Florida, I was thinking about flying in, buying the truck there, and driving it home. Someone here in Florida told me that it'd be impossible to title a truck bought in another state.

You all seem to know more about this than I do. A) Would it be a problem buying a truck in another state? B) What are the odds it's easier to find a truck in Texas than Florida? C) Most important - do you think it's worth going to Franklins, or just bypass downtown and go to Lockhart?

I would call the DMV and ask them. I don't think it impossible because people buy out of state all the time. You just need to see what process is to get a FL title and registration.

@Fotnot just bought a Sequoia in Texas and took it back to Louisiana a few months ago. I don’t think he had any issues.

    Go to Franklins. Then Lockhart.

It's totally possible as I just drove to Utah and bought my most recent Tundra. I had been on the prowl and 8 hours away is the closest I found one so we loaded up and took the drive out. It was painless. The only thing out of the ordinary I had to deal with was I had to have a VIN verification done by the dealer here in Colorado once the truck was back here. The bank required this as an out of state transfer before they would send the title work to the DMV. Luckily I had an appointment right away at the dealer here in Colorado to have the fuel pump recall done, so they did the VIN verification for me while it was there...free of charge.

i live in southwest louisiana and have bought 2 trucks in southeast texas since they had what i was looking for. they do everything there and get your place of residence and do your taxes and registration per your county/parish. you're just purchasing the truck.
it's about the same as buying stuff on Amazon. you purchase it from them, but your taxes are done at the end to make sure you pay the taxes per your county/state. it's not difficult. it's really no different for them honestly.

Yep, and there are sales tax implications. I believe you have to pay sales tax in state it is registered in. That is what I had to do with boat trailer that I bought in LA.

I bought mine out of state. Just make sure you look into the tax implications as every state has different rules and different rates, although some have reciprocal tax agreements. I was considering a good deal in California until I found out the state charges 7.5% tax if you are driving it off the lot - whether you live there or not. Be careful or you might pay a lot more MV tax than you want.

I've bought two vehicles out of state in the last 4 years. Whoever told you that is an idiot. The process and details may vary by state, but if you call your DMV they can give you a heads up on what the process is going to look like.

I live in Louisiana and bought my truck in Texas. Just make sure the Texas dealer knows you are a Florida resident so they can prepare the paperwork per your state. You’ll then receive all your paperwork in the mail a couple weeks later that you’ll need to bring to your local title company/dmv and they’ll then process it and give your license plate.

Its really different from state to state and sadly from dealer to dealer too?
Dont assume a dealer is correct from another state!
    Guess how I know?

Find out from your own state and try to work it that way.

But of course it is easy to do people do it all the time.

Thanks guys. Appreciate it. Seems like the consensus is to do the conservative thing and call the DMV and make sure it's not an issue...but it sounds like it shouldn't be an issue.

Nah. Won't be an issue. You just need to know what particular hoops you have to jump through.

I have never purchased a vehicle (9 between wifey and I) from a dealership that was in the state that I lived in. The dealership has always done the paperwork but I know for a fact I always paid my home state taxes. My buddy is from South Carolina and purchased his Tundra in NJ. He had zero problems…easy peezy. Just make sure you have the correct amount set aside OP if the dealership doesn’t collect the tax. I have also bought a few out of state private used vehicles and never had an issue.

It really shouldn't be an issue. Most of my vehicles that I bought new were from different states than the one I lived in. I just don't have any direct experience with Florida.

Not impossible or even difficult but it depends on the age of the car. I brought in an 06 corolla and crv into the state as a purchase but since they were older the dmv didn't care. If you're buying a newer vehicle, you'll set up your appointment, you take your title and proof of insurance and they walk out to the parking lot to verify the odometer. If thw car has a loan on it, it may complicate things. The tax collector website is fairly good at explaining it, but there's also some other resources - here's a fairly straightforward link I found. https://www.myimprov.com/traffic-school/florida/driver-resources/fl-dmv-registration-titling/

I deal with titles daily mostly PA titles but out of state titles as well. If you buy it out of state you will need to pay your Florida sales tax when purchasing OR when you register the vehicle in FL and get your plate. If there is loan on the vehicle you will need a letter sent to the lender (call and find out the correct dept maybe able to fax or email) to release the title to you or however Florida does titles DMV/ NOTARY MESSENGER service. Once registered and everything in FL that title is sent back to lender. If you're driving the truck from TX to FL you will need some kind of temp transit plate from TX to get it back to FL.

****MAKE DAMN SURE YOU'RE NOT PAYING SALES TAX IN TX AND FL!
