    Hello all,

    I have a 2008 Toyota Tundra 4X4, Crew-Max, TRD Off-Road.

My son recently replaced the starter on this critter. Since then, its acting oddly. Starts Most of the time when its cold. If you go somewhere and come out, it won't start. Lights in dash flashing. Attempting to jump does not produce sparks at all when hooking up jumper cables. Letting it charge for a while, doesn't help, really. (Overnight with a charger will start in a.m.); however, if one just leaves the Tundra alone for an hour or hour and a half, it starts. Go figure.

Someone suggested that the electrical between the new new starter and battery might be bad.

Has anyone had experience going to an auto parts store, a couple say they have code readers....
and getting an idea on what is wrong? Help please. Honestly, too upper-middle aged and handicapped to keep up this stuff. Battery is only 11 months old.

    Thanks,

Did you have starting problems before this? Just because the starter is "new" doesn't mean it's good. I put in a "new" alternator in a car one time and it fried all of the electronics. Turns out the alternator was putting out almost twice what it was supposed to. Anyway, I'd check your connections on the starter to make sure they're good and tight. If they are, replace the starter.

Not starting and not cranking properly are two entirely different things. Which is the problem. I get it doesn't start, but does it crank over right? Cranking right but not starting means fuel, air, fire issues. Not cranking means starter, battery, electrical issues. Check battery voltage with a meter?

First thing I would check is the battery amps and all its connections, and ground.

1.) are all the connections clean and tight , battery cables both negative and positive.
2.) do all the grounds look clean and not green or corroded
3.) with the vehicle off does the battery have 12V or more using a multimeter
4.) after charging over night and letting battery charge "Quote (Overnight with a charger will start in a.m.)" unplug the charger and does the battery have 12V or more
5.) following after #4 start the vehicle and put the multimeter back on the battery. Is the battery now getting 14.2V or more while it is running?

if battery reads low volts or looses volts fast
1.) disconnect battery , let battery sit on charge over night , test with multimeter for 12 or more volts if there is less than 12V at that time (Replace Battery)
2.) if it charges back to 12V or more let battery sit unhooked up for 24 hours if it looses volts (Replace Battery)

if the battery is not getting a 14.2V or more
1.) check that the alternator charge wire is good and clean
2.) disconnect battery and probe the positive battery wire (not the battery) and probe the alternator positive out post , check for ohms in .5 ohm range 1.0 ohms would also probably be fine also , any thing uber high is a indication of bad charge wire
3.) following #2 if the wires check out. its most likely the alternator (replace alternator , I also always recommend replacing the battery when a Failed alternator is replaced due to. bad charging system can kill a battery , once a healthy alternator is put in the bad battery can kill a alternator)

if all of these things check out are 100% my next suggestion is
1.) checking out the starter relay for proper function and not sticking.

also You mention it received a Starter , was this a replacement for "preventive maintenance" or was the vehicle "having prior starting issues"?

If the vehicle did have prior starting issues before the starter replacement. how was it diagnosed to point to starter?
