Look for the Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) for the area you want to camp. It will show you the areas where you can disperse camp and how far off the road you can setup your vehicle/camp. I've seen dispersed vehicle camping allowed as much as 300' of the road on some maps.

How do you like that RTT? I'm looking hard at that model, deciding between it and the iKamper 2.0.

Does anyone have some bed storage ideas? Or have pictures of their decked drawer system? I’m looking to be more organized. I used some Rubbermaid bins which was great, but on hard trails some of mine cracked from moving around a lot. I like the Decked system a lot but it’s a big investment.

I’ve also been using 6gallon water jugs but I’m thinking of going to a rotopax mounted to my bed rack or another system with a valve to more easily get water out. Pouring from the jugs is a pain especially for my wife.

Just looking to fine tune things, appreciate any insight!

Here are some pics from our latest trip.

Have you looked into truck vault. It’s not cheap but I can’t justify decked plastic for that much money. Or maybe just build one ?

    Lots of shenanigans.
I’ve got the decked system and love it. I am able to keep most of my camping gear in the left drawer and my recovery/tools on the right. Install is straight forward and they have great customer service. It’s pricey, and they seemed to never run any sort of sale. You lose about a foot in height on your bed but looks like you have a high bed rack so it shouldn’t be too noticeable. I saw the water rotopax as well but read that some people had issues with the gas rotopax expanding over time and the company not offering a replacement. I currently use this:

Reliance Products Aqua-Tainer 7 Gallon Rigid Water Container (Pack of 2) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TSBNKM5

I go to my local Publix and fill it up with those .25 per gallon water machines and go to my camping trip. It’s cheaper and I believe it holds more water. I just bungee it down while I’m driving. Lmk if you have any questions about the decked system.

Big fan of it, opening it and setting up can be accomplished by one person in probably 3 mins once you get used to the awning poles. Tear down is just as fast. I have had no issues with our tent. The mattress is great for a few nights, you may want to add something if you are doing a long trip but for weekends it does the trick. When we first got it we were sleeping four of us ( myself, wife and two kids plus a dog) and had room for everyone.

    Too many, but not enough....
I use these as well, they are great and I dont get any leaks from them. Only thing with these is they have crazy price volatility. I bought my first one for around 20 bucks then i guess there was a shortage, the price went up to 35 bucks each, then down to 20 again and i swooped on it.

I built my own with 2x8s and 1x6s, plywood, and some skateboard wheel bearings on Amazon. I've got about $300 into the setup. Aint pretty because I don't have a super precise miter saw, but a much better investment than $1500 for a Decked system.

Those jugs fit perfectly in a milk crate. A lot easier and much more secure strapping the crates down.

There are a ton of threads on here with photos of these setups. There's one I can think of about "Show me your caps" or shells or something like that that includes some, I think. Search for "bed platforms", "bed storage", "camping setups", etc.

Anyhoo, here's mine from a super busy trip (there is a photographic darkroom in this shot...)

And a lot more photos of it inside and out here:

    https://www.nomadicfrog.com/2020/06/01/my-most-expensive-piece-of-photo-gear

    IMG_1869.jpg

I've got a thread of how I built it - looks very similar in concept to lsaami's up there - roller skate bearings, and I used 3/4 inch square steel tube.

I've being using Sterilite totes from Walmart, and they have held up amazingly well. Was not expecting them to survive, just be temporary until I figure out something better. I'd love to be cool with fancy cases, but these damn things won't break. I do, in general, have more, smaller totes, with less weight in them, so maybe that helps.

Lots of people like Plano Sportsman totes, and the Action Packers are pretty popular too, while still being "cheaper" than, say, Pelican cases and such. Also the new Husky Professional totes at Home Depot look interesting: clear lids and the latches double as hinges. Unfortunately they are more expensive, and taper a lot on the sides, reducing capacity.

I use Home Depot's RIGID toolboxes for some things. They are fairly cheap ($29-$59, sometimes on sale) and hold up pretty well.

Regarding Pelicans and such, I found at least one warehouse full of used Pelican-style cases (Pelican, Hardigg, SKG, etc.) in the Phoenix area that sells used ones for about 1/4-1/3 of new. Selection changes constantly, but there are tons of options. Probably lots of these around the country. (These guys also ship, no idea about costs for that.) Anyhow, used cases (craigslist, Marketplace, etc.) might be an option.

My problem with a lot of those, aside from expense, is that I feel they waste a lot of space. I know angled and corrugated sides add strength without adding weight, but I just like the DIY route if you can manage it. Plus you can build it exactly the way you think you want (and then when you use it a while and realize it isn't exactly what you want, you can re-do it ad infinitum / nauseam). :)

I'm on a never-ending quest to find the perfect water jug, and it is a frustrating and mostly-fruitless endeavour. My current favorite is a 4-gallon heavy duty "Reliance Armadillo". I can go into all the whys and details. But anyhow, the Reliance jugs with their spouts, set on the tailgate or table, seem to work pretty well, dispense as easily as any faucet - for the cost, especially. I'm just resigned to buying and having spare spigots on hand for when they inevitably break.

    ON A DIFFERENT NOTE:

I have developed a very annoying habit of leaving the tailgate down and driving off, which I discover a shocking distance later. It's a testament to my over-engineered drawer system that it survived hanging around out there...

Anyhow, I probably should get / make some sort of warning system so that if I put it in Drive and the tailgate is down it blares "HEY DUMBASS YOUR TAILGATE IS DOWN" with flashing lights and stuff.

I can't really find such a thing. One weird device on Amazon that shines a laser in the outside rearview mirror, which sounds...problematic for several reasons.

Anyone have a "tailgate open!" alarm solution??

I had the same issue when i had a folding cover on mine. Found that I left my tail gate down on a few occasions. Did some searching for solutions and found a few. Some complicated and some very cheap and easy. I chose the easy path. Just put in a bright red LED on my dash and ran the ground to a push switch that would 'break' that ground when the tailgate is up. Powered the LED with a fuse tap. Pretty happy with it and saved me a few times. Now I have a canopy so its not as much of a problem since I can view it from inside the cab but when its full and not visible from the cab, it still lets me know if the tailgate is closed.

The other option is if you have a anytime camera. I put one in because i wanted the front camera. Since the rear camera is on the tailgate, you can always check the view to see if the tail gate is down.

I’ve found, these will crack and leak… on a first trip… if not in a milk crate and secured tightly to the bed. Secured properly they’re a good deal.

I have a first-gen, so no tailgate-mounted camera. My aftermarket camera is mounted on a license plate frame with a little 3D-printed bracket, and while I think I could see the tailgate if it were down, it would also require me to actively look, which defeats the purpose since I clearly can't remember to actively close the tailgate in the first place.

I figure a contact switch and all, like you describe, would work, but then I (over-)think about how to mount it securely, route the wire inside the cab, power the whole thing...and go back to wondering about off-the-shelf solutions.

Brand new, not sun-damaged. Just wheeled hard. I know this won’t apply to most people. I offer it as a caution to those that wheel hard, secure them with ratchet straps so they can’t bounce even a little.

Thats never a bad idea and yeah, wheeling hard would definitely make a difference. The plastic is not super thick.

Thank you, having a trailer is definitely a game changer. Especially for families, with all 5 of us in the truck we ran out of space quickly.

So that's a RTT on the trailer right? Just curious why not get a camping trailer instead? I've seen some used for decent prices... probably more in other states, Oregon is not very cheap lol.

You mean a full on camper? Or the little tear drop camping trailers?
Yes, it’s a 23Zero Sydney RTT mounted on top of a custom trailer I had built by TrailToys.
We’re still young enough to enjoy roughing it, and we like simple things. And this trailer was custom built to take a beating. Most of the tear drops are aluminum and plywood and wouldn’t hold up good long term, they’re also way more expensive than what I have. Plus my trailer is on 37s, so what’s not to love? Lol

Been there. Great spot. Earned a bunch of pin stripes on that road.

See the Plano lid in the foreground? My kids used it to sled down the sand dunes. Fun trip.

That trail is a blast! How high were the water crossings when you went? We ran it over fathers day weekend for the break in cruise on the truck... Tight fit with the truck, definitely drove with the mirrors in.... :bananadance:
