Bed liner rust spots.. What to do?

Please see the attached pictures. This is a 2018 tundra. I’ve tried clr/water and a wire brush.

I showed it to a bed liner shop and they recommended re doing the entire thing.

I may try to pressure myself next just to see. If that doesn’t work I’ll probably pay the $800 to re do it.

Has anyone else had this? Should I be really concerned? It’s really disappointing because all other spray in liners I’ve looked at are in great shape.

edit: I’m bringing it into Toyota tomorrow, they seem like they can help or maybe just offer cash assistance...

The corrosion warranty for Tundras is for 60 months. Was the bed liner done at the factory? If so I would go to Toyota and see if the warranty applies. Either way the corrosion is under the liner material and needs to be eliminated or it will continue to spread. That sucks either way.

I hate seeing posts like this. That last photo looks troublesome. If this is what you can see on top of the liner I would hate to see inderneath. As a note, if the bed is rusting, respraying will not solve your issue. Good luck, hoping for the best outcome!

 

I’m wondering if it’s not actually coming from the paint but on the surface of the liner. Any type of metal shavings will turn to rust like that very quickly. I know because I’ve cut some cast-iron in a customers backyard only to find it all turned to rust the next day, because I didn’t sweep up well enough. Or the liner it’s self was sprayed on too thin and it’s actually coming from the metal.

Curious what happens next.

 

Good Point. I was thinking that too but that last photo really looks like its coming from under the liner. I really hope not. I wonder where in the world this truck is.

 

Yeah I see that little cancer spot. I’d pick at that and if it came all the way down to the metal, if it did, I’d have them strip it and start over. Then I get a cheap soft cover to keep it as dry as possible in the future. Also checking underneath the bed for any rust coming all the way through.

It is possible that the rust is on top of the liner…..and the cancer spot might have been a ding that gouged the bed liner and started to rust when the metal was exposed. But even that spot looks raised - maybe a piece of metal that got stuck in the liner and rusted there. I really don’t think that is coming from underneath the liner by the way it looks. Was the liner sprayed when the truck was new?

go under the bed and inspect it. If there is rust, you should see it. which state are you in ?

 

Under bed pics please! This may warrant me spending money to get mine redone from the get go. YIKES. Where do you live?

BTW, it also looks like the high iron content clay we have here in the PNW that is a PITA to clean off of your truck!

I can't see how it's possible that it's bed rust eating it's way from the underside on a 2018.

My money is on surface rust.

 

Get some fallout remover. Or something similar as alumabrite or goof off rustaid let sit don’t let dry. Then hit it with the pressure washer looks all surface shavings from cutting or grinding metal

 

I think it could be from something that was hauled in your bed and left rust, metal shavings, metal dust, etc on top of the bedliner. I thought the whole point of sprayed on bedliners was to seal off the factory bed from the outside. If they do indeed perform like that, if the bed was rusting underneath the bedliner, the rust shouldnt come through it. I would try some more things to clean off the top side of the bedliner like mentioned earlier....fallout remover, rust remover, etc. Those pictures just look like rust or some other type of residue to me. Of course I'm not from the North or Midwest where rust is more of an issue so I may not know some of the signs that yall do. I would get under the truck and see what underneath the bed looks like.....if it's rusting between the sheet metal and the bedliner you would think there would be significant rust on the underside of the sheet metal too.

 

Did you ever find a solution of this?
