Hello all, I'm looking to haul a 1600lb tote of dirt in my '15 Tundra about 60 miles, a small part highway, the rest up and down a small mountain.

Looks like the truck itself can only carry 1360lb, including me. So I'd be pushing the overbuilt limits of my truck for this?

I have an unbraked one axle trailer that has a max capacity of 1600lb.

The owner's manual for my truck has a somewhat confusing small entry on unbraked TWR:

As far as I can tell, that's the only mention in the manual of unbraked TWR.

Here in AZ, the law requires trailers > 3000lb gross be braked. The trailer itself weighs only 400lb, so the trailer would be fine.

Am I asking for trouble hauling this either way, in the bed of my truck, or in the trailer?

    Thanks!

    Trailer.

Use common sense, keep your distance, use your gears to slow you down, and let the Tundra do what it was built to do.

Thanks! I don't wish to assume. Are you saying DO use the trailer or do NOT use the trailer?

Best to use the trailer and take it easy, lots of braking distance.

    Use the Trailer

The Tundra is a heavy truck. And listen to the advice @ColoradoTJ said.

Texas law says brakes on trailer weighing over 4500#. I pull a boat to the coast multiple times a year. No brakes on the 4499# trailer. Maintain your distance from vehicles in front. No problems.

I used the trailer and it worked like a champ. Took it easy, made sure the tires were fully inflated (they weren't originally!), no braking problems, everything was just perfect.
    I love my truck.

Id use the trailer and not think to hard about it, Use the transmission in Manual/Sport in tow-haul and you'll be fine.
I bought a used tractor a few years ago, the tractor and a 18' trailer weighted around 7700 pounds combined. I towed it from Spring TX up to my ranch in Buffalo TX around 120 miles give or take a few. I didn't have a brake controller then and I didn't have any issues at all. I ran it in manual/sport mode with tow-haul, I used the gears to help control my speed and slow it down when needed. After that trip my wife decided she wanted the brake controller so I installed a Tekonsha P3 for a piece of mind, it works great and very to Install and use. pretty soon I'll be upgrading to a larger tractor and a 20' trailer, all together it'll be right at 10,000lbs and will see how the tundra dose with that.
