    Metric shit ton of parts

Here's the deal. A plasma cutter is an investment just like any other tool. Only you can decide if it's worth it. For me, my time is valuable. I occasionally do fab work on the side, but the majority of it is for me and my rigs. And the time difference between a plasma and...anything else...is absurd. I got my Hypertherm on Craigslist for a screaming deal. But you don't need the a 65 amp plasma for garage stuff.

Take a look at Lotos plasmas. They are very affordable by comparison. I've used a 5000 on several occasions and it does the job and the consumables are significantly cheaper than Hypertherm's.

Thats not a bad price - I always have a need for a plasma but never wanted to spend the $$$ I just upgraded my welder from a Miller 140 to a Miller 211.

What he said, but, if you do decide to go with a plasma cutter, or oxy-acetylene, or even a grinder with cutting wheels, PRACTICE before you cut into something that you care about. Find scrap metal and learn about the machine adjustments, eye hand coordination, control of the tool and the safety aspects at a minimum. Having been a shipfitter in a previous life, you can't screw something up beyond repair, but you might not want to pay the price to make the repair. Unless of course if you kill yourself or someone else. Not trying to be overly dramatic, but I've seen a guy die from careless torch handling.

That is not a bad price. Welding is next on my list after I finish building out my woodworking arsenal. Truck mods are coming first. I need to do more side work.

Grinder with a cutting wheel. You can buy the wheels at Lowes, homedepot or tractor supply. I have cut everything with those, from frames to thin metal.
