Has anyone upgraded their factory back up camera? I have an aftermarket head unit halo9 to be exact and it still has the guidelines which interfere with the head unit guidelines that can be adjusted. I don’t mind running new wires to the head unit but would prefer to find a plug and play unit that has better clarity and definition compared to OEM.

The camera isn't the issue...the screen is not High Definition...it has the dpi of an elementary school laptop...upgrade you HU and you will immediately notice a vast improvement...spend well buddy

Wasn’t laughing at you, OP. Hopefully someone has a good answer for you, but I think the mounting of the camera is the limiting factor here. I’ve never had a reason to tear into the tailgate handle, though, so I could be wrong.

Apparently there is a wire that you can cut on the camera and it will help get rid of the guidelines, if I could do that then I would be cool keeping the factory camera because I would get the full view without distortion of lines.Cleaner image; bigger picture. I just need to find out which wire that is so I can cap It off. Then I can play with the camera settings on the head unit and set it to my liking. Those guidelines are useless unless they are actual park assist lines that move with the steering wheel then they really don’t help especially when hitting up a trailer because the line is not where it needs to be

I'd be more interested in an aftermarket video rear view mirror with the camera mounted above the cab (integrated with the gps antenna would have been good) so I could see over all the crap I'm hauling. The bike racks and roof box murders my rear view and sticks out about 5 feet behind the truck. Backing up when you can't see sucks.

With the alpine halo nine you can just get the alpine AV switch your module and I think you can have up to like four cameras that you can switch on the head unit. A 360 camera would be ideal also for the rear or truck bed

My Kenwood HU has it own lines, I just turned them off.
But I can understand why you'd rather use the Alpine lines.
Keep us posted on what you decide to do and how it turns out.

This may or may not help you.
Camera schematics for JBL and non-JBL Entune HUs, they look the same to me.
You'll just need someone smarter than me to tell you what wires (CA+, V+, V- and CGND) do what, I'd guess GND is ground.

Cv+\- is camera voltage CGND camera ground but not sure about CURT or CB+? Anyone? Maybe one of those is the lines. This really sucks because I’m a control technician by trade and I can’t figure it out

CURT is just another ground from what I can tell, unless that's the loop that triggers the guide lines. CB+ should be the power signal from the reverse lights that turns on the camera, as I don't think it has constant power. If I have some time today I might open up my tailgate and poke around with a multimeter.

It could be that CB is like the remote turn on on a amplifier yet you have 12 V positive and negative constantly connected but doesn’t actually turn on unless it gets a signal from the perverse light so maybe it is just part of the camera. This is the cheapest way for Toyota to have a camera and provide guidelines that can be universally used on all Toyota vehicles.

Did anyone ever figure this out? I just upgraded to a Kenwood head unit with dynamic steering guide lines, and I would love to get rid of the factory lines.

not yet. But there is no way to get rid of the lines just replace with another camera. Only bad part is you have to run new wires to headunit if you have a aftermarket headunit. The kenwood has the cs710 or something like that and it’s a really good camera. You can also wire the kenwood dash cam to it.

@TucsonTundra1794, if you don't mind me asking, what is the brand of the system you are using and how well has it worked for you? How did you install on the brakelight? I have a shell on mine and am looking to install a camera on the 3rd brake light as well.

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0855GMKMD?_encoding=UTF8

I also bought this so it wasn't plugged into my 12v socket with an exposed cord.

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FXJD8W1?_encoding=UTF8

With the hardwire kit I ran the cord down the a pillar and through the firewall and to the battery with the add a fuse attached to the ignition fuse so it comes on when the truck comes on. The mirror also has a built in battery so when it detects movement it will turn on and start recording which is a cool feature. If also recommend getting an SD card because it will need one to store the files.

Install was simple, 3 wires, one for power which is wired how I said above, next is rear camera which is ran along the headliner on the driver's side and goes through the roof and comes out above the 3rd brake light, If you wanted yours on your topper I would recommend running the wire under the truck and come up inside the bed and attach above the topper from in there. 3rd wire is GPS antenna, the camera monitors speed and distance and you can download all the data on your computer. If you don't need this it will run without the GPS attached. Other then that it's a simple install and no problems or regrets with it at all.

Thanks for the information. I have been looking at that model for awhile but hadn't pulled the trigger because i was sure how well the camera would survive on top of the 3rd brake light. Given your location, I'm assuming you don't have any issues with moisture getting into the camera and the heat hasn't affected the camera either?

No issues except for the issues I also have with the factory camera which are water getting on the lenses and distorting the image. Other then that the monsoon season we just had and the extreme heat we have otherwise have not affected the camera at all.
