In February of this year I decided to sell my Tacoma and get back into a full size truck. The Tacoma was a welcome respite from my previous truck, a Ford Raptor, that was falling apart with a measly 70k miles on the clock. I was driving down the road one evening when I spotted the coolest little truck i'd ever seen. It was a second-gen RCSB Tundra lifted and on aggressive mud terrains. I fell in love and the search began a couple months later. After an extensive search, I landed on a 2007 RCSB in the perfect configuration; Regular Cab, Short bed, 5.7, 4x4, Silver, bench seat. It was located 500 miles away in Salt Lake City, Utah, but I convinced myself to load up the Tacoma and head out that way at 3:00am monday morning. I made it to Salt Lake at noon and checked out the Tundra. The body was in a little worse shape than I was hoping, but nothing I couldn't live with at the price the Chevy dealership was asking for it. The truck had also been converted to run on Natural Gas in 2013 which was interesting, but I convinced myself I could return it to stock. I finished all the paperwork, waited around for the service department to throw a new set of tires on the Carved Alloy's and headed back towards Arizona around 6:00pm. With a handful of roadside power naps and a 4 pack of Redbull in the past, I pulled into my apartment parking lot just after 5:00am and hit the sack.

I began by removing the CNG system including the 500lb tanks in the bed. I followed that up with some basic cosmetic stuff like de-rusting suspension and frame parts as well as painting the front brake calipers and replacing the front rotors (not pictured):

    IMG_1428_zps09kj2b42_12a47c562981adc611ee332a8285ba3f17fa098e.jpg

While poking around under the truck, I noticed that one of the Fat Bob's cast lift blocks was cracked in half and was being held in by the U-bolts for the Air Lift load lifters. I ordered a Deaver Mini Pack and got it installed. The Utah winters played hell on a lot of the components which resulted in me cutting off the U-Bolts for both the Air Bags and the Axles. I trashed the bags and rusty brackets and replaced the U-bolts with some OME Replacements:

    IMG_1480_zpsj1qd2qko_4d15bdd766437bcd4b0c1ad47a8bc289bf69f4be.jpg

I had a set of 18x9 Method Grids wrapped in 295/70/18 General Grabber X3's show up the day before the spring install so I got those installed with the new springs. The Truck had a Daystar 3" spacer up front so they fit and looked great:

    IMG_1476_zpsv4vol2kx_dd8217b82c7c2512c963536b7fa8076c88c90d75.jpg

I finally got to use the truck off road and was curious as to how the Grabber X3's worked on various surfaces. I found some fast paced gravel, some mild snow and, the worst thing ever, Mud:

    IMG_1509_zpsaxwjm8kn_577b4d048a14963639cd138892d037cdffbfa170.jpg

    IMG_1531_zpsojgjzkj6_806cf3c73c502f136e3ffaa1dcd234a0b9b99458.jpg

The Grabbers were excellent on both gravel and mud and were actually better than expected on snow. Not fantastic on icy pavement but the sipes, albeit minimal, are a worthwhile addition to the tire.

Satisfied with the wheel and tire package, I did a few minor cosmetic modifications which made a big difference in cleaning up the truck. Used some yellow Krylon stained glass paint on the fog reflectors and hit the headlights with a coat of Spraymax 2k clear:

    IMG_1510_zpswkwds0lz_9f642a5dc2e2d3dc38c28f00c895ad8e853230c1.jpg

    IMG_1580_zpsdtxoqlme_f9c60f45f61e52a58efec0a70d1a68e19d10d662.jpg

Wasn't happy with the stock suspension and daystar spacer setup so, when funds allowed, I ordered a set of ADS 2.5 Remote Reservoir front coilovers and a set of 2.5 piggyback shocks to compliment the Deavers in the rear. Was very impressed with the quality when they arrived. Had to customize the stickers a little, but couldn't be happier with them. Install was a bitch due to rust and geometry issues from the spacer, but I got it handled with a little help from my sawzall:

    IMG_1681_zpsba4lmt66_8e4ef1b9643ea37510f8047d5ee8cb0e79d80993.jpg

That's where I'm at for now. Truck feels much better than the Craptor with it's lower weight and higher quality shocks. Will continue to update the thread when things happen. Thanks for checking it out,

    Mike.

Looks great. I've been thinking 'bout an RCSB to have as a toy. You're making me want one even more. Nice work. I'm curious about the clear on the headlights? What's the purpose?

this is awesome. My dad is hunting for a RCSB 4x4 5.7 but they are hard to find. Those PBR reservoirs are cool, lol.

Thanks guys! Will hopefully have some more to post soon!

The headlights were pretty foggy so I sanded the OEM clear off and used the spray clear to make them like new again. The clear doesn't cloud back up again like a basic polish job does.

That's some cool and useful knowledge. I didn't know there was/ is an OEM clear on the headlights. Thanks a lot for the info!

Thanks. I've got a '16 so I probably don't need it yet. But, it's really helpful info 'cause you never know where the knowledge can be applied. I've got a daughter that's gonna be driving soon. I'm pretty certain her first car won't be new...lol

Thanks Aaron! The ADS' have been great. I've definitely done my share of wrench turning. Sometimes the most difficult part is convincing yourself you can do it. If I can do it in an apartment complex parking lot in the Arizona sun, anyone can.

Ya know I do love all the room I have in my CM, but that is one bad ass looking truck Mike. Love the stance and being a RCSB it looks super beefy !!!! :muscleflexing: Job well done... FYI, if you have any other issues with the rust on any other components, look at POR15. Brush right over rust and will stop it in its tracks.

    Lenny,

The RCSBs definitely end up looking pretty beefy when lifted. I've only got a girlfriend and a couple of dogs so the bachelor cab has been room enough for us. I've heard a lot about por-15 in the past, but have never used it. I hope it doesn't get to the point that I need it. I've been using my favorite "jet-lube" brand anti-seize on most of the fasteners I remove so that should help.

Lovin the build so far man! I'm so used to seeing regular or single cabs that're lowered, finally seeing a lifted one is badass.

Was having some issues with the factory exhaust hitting the body. Turns out the flange that connects the back half of the exhaust to the middle section was rusted out. Cut off the flange and clamped on a turn down.
