Why is there so much trailer in front of the first axle?

What price did you get quoted for the trans cooler?

I didn’t dial in the WDH. I was just generally testing on a friend’s trailer.

They quoted me $675 for install if I provide the kit. Haven’t looked into the kits yet so I’m open to suggestions on that. I’m waiting for another quote as well. Do kits for prior years work or is there one made for 2021’s?

Check out the genuine cooling systems kit put together by one of the members here. Almost all Toyota oem parts. Runs close $1000 for the full kit. The kit works for all 2019-2021 where the cooler was removed.

Genuine Cooling Systems is the go to solution for us 19+ owners. I'm towing an 8k lbs trailer and it keepa my temps 25-40 degrees cooler than without it. 200-215 max on long climbs.

Seems a 4-5 hour install is the average for shadetree mechanics. Do what you wish with that information when shopping installation costs.

$675 to install a cooler is way too much. Where are you located?

I figured so as that was was from the local dealership, Capitol Toyota. I’m in Salem, OR. I called another local mechanic to see what they would charge and am waiting to hear back.

I installed mine myself and it took me way too long. I could do it in probably three hours now, even less if I had a lift. I know somebody in Oregon City that would install it for around $200 if you are interested.

I went with Nick's kit from Genuine Cooling Systems. The only thing that it not factory is the cooler.

Just wondering if anyone with a Pro (preferably ‘19-‘21) has any experience towing travel trailers? What was your experience like?

Yes. 2020 Pro. Added shackles to the rear to help with any squat. Use an equalizer WDH to tow my trailer which weighed in about 6500 pounds. Truck is much more stable platform than my 2015 Silverado 1500 was. I normally use manual S4. And I also leave the tow/haul button on. Truck pulls fine. I have no idea about transmission temps but have never seen any warning lights while towing on the hills of the east coast. Love the truck!!

I believe the transmission warning light doesn’t come on until around 300F. I would highly recommend getting something like a Scan Gauge to monitor both of the transmission sensors.

Excuse my ignorance.......but I see your suggestion and I have also read some of the other posts on this forum regarding monitoring Trans temps etc...etc...

    My question is this:
Is this stuff totally plug and play into the trucks port where they plug in to obtain codes etc....etc.....or do I have to place sensors somewhere within the closed system of the transmission, torque converter, drain pan etc...etc...?

Thanks for any intel for the mechanically uninclined.

The Scan Gauge I had just plugged into the port. Used the Velcro from the kit to mount it on my steering column. The hardest part was finding the right codes to plug in. It will be reading from the two sensors that are already in the transmission. I believe there is a thread on it somewhere on this forum.

Top left is the tranny pan temp, top right is the torque converter temp.

I had the daystar cradles on my Tacoma and loved them. Full articulation... my buddies gave me a hard time before we went wheeling and after they saw the rig in action they were very impressed. I had zero limitations with the cradles. That said... I was a little tired of checking air and bought the "Roadmaster's Active Suspension" which also received great reviews from my Tundra Buddies. I tow a 3500lb OPUS 4 off-road trailer that has a fully articulating hitch, which is not compatible with hitch distribution systems. My other Jeep Buddy has a pretty cool hitch distribution system where the springs sit on top vs. below for better ground clearance. (just thought I would share that)

Hello. I read through the thread and didn't see my exact (or close) situation. I bought the PRO and am waiting for an Opus OP2 to be delivered. Single axle off road popup camp trailer. I plan on dispersed camping over some pretty rough roads...

    Specs are:

    upload_2021-9-24_12-45-2.jpg
    upload_2021-9-24_12-45-51.jpg

I am told the camper will handle anything the truck can. Any advise for the truck?
    TIA!

21 Pro is worse at towing than the 16 SR5 TRD I had.

I don't tow a large travel trailer but a boat with trailer that probably together weighs 7000lbs. Pro was darty, bouncy, and just did not handle the load well due to cushy suspension. The 16 SR5 towed this same boat like it wasn't there.

Added firestone airbags and rear swaybar to the Pro and the problems are now solved. But this is for a medium sized load. If it wasn't a boat I might have went the weight distribution hitch route.

That’s my dilemma. Part of me thinks I’ll be ok with just the WDH (5000 lb trailer) but the other part thinks I should air bags just in case. Of course, I don’t want to spend money on them if I don’t have to. I haven’t had a chance to tow a trailer with the proper set-up to test it.

Do you carry stuff in your bed when towing?

Not much, most of the stuff would be in the trailer. Probably not more than 200 lbs in the bed.

I’ll be renting a trailer. Single axel Keystone, 5000 lbs gross.

in my experience, thats the difference in my decision to add sumo springs for towing my trailer. The WDh doesn’t account for the stuff in the bed. With firewood, camp gear, coolers, and the bikes, my bed load is around 500-600lbs. So the sumos take care of that and then the wdh does it’s thing. Prior to the sumos, my truck sagged too much for my liking. The wdh alone would have been plenty if I didn’t load down my bed with other gear

    My truck is leveled btw

Great to hear, thanks! I called my local Les Schwab and they can install Firestones or Airlift for about $700. I may do that just in case since it’s not too much.

Installation is 700? Do it yourself if you have some basic tools it's pretty easy.

Don't forget to add the daystar cradles mentioned earlier.

I am late to this party but my experiences may help someone down the line. I tow a 2021 Casita travel trailer that is ~3200 with 400# hitch weight. I installed the blue sumo springs (30 minute job) and the Anersen WDH. It tows a dream with a couple hundred pounds in the bed.

I went with the Andersen WDH as it allows me to back up without fiddling with the WDH and its easy to adjust and GREASE FREE!

Hey all, just wanted to shoot out an update after my hunting trip. I was very impressed by my truck’s performance. Here are my thoughts on the items I was concerned about:

Power- I never once felt like it didn’t have enough. I used tow/haul and had it in D the entire trip.

Transmission- I did not have a temp. gauge or external cooler but was not worried about it. The highest ambient temp we went through was probably in the lower 50’s. I never smelled any hot fluid like odors.

Trailer sway- We went through the Columbia River Gorge, which can be very windy at times, and I never once had any sway issues. I did have a sway bar on the trailer.

Weight- I had a WDH and tried to adjust it best I could. We had quite a bit of weight in the bed of the truck (generator, propane tank, etc.) so it squatted quite a bit and caused the WDH bars to hang pretty low. They were probably only about 3” off the ground! We definitely hit when coming in and out of parking lots and a few times on some uneven terrain in the area we hunt. I went through a truck scale and have posted a photo of the axel weights below. I’m not sure if they are within specs so any feedback on that is very much appreciated. I’m pretty sure I was a little over weight on payload but combined weight was well within capacity.

Conclusion- Other than the squat, I had no issues so I am now confident that all I need are air bags to eliminate the squat. I definitely feel better about towing. Any feedback is always appreciated!

Looks like you're about 500 lbs over your GVWR. Any idea what your trailer GVWR is? Moving the stuff from the bed of the truck to the trailer (directly above the axle or slightly forward of it) would help both with GVWR/payload and squat. (I wouldn't put it behind the axle as that could affect stability.)

I can't recall offhand what the rear axle rating of our trucks is. Sure you're not over it? Sticker inside the driver's door.

Trailer GVWR is 5000. My plan was to put more stuff in the trailer over the axle but it was a rental so I didn’t want to put the generator, propane tank and chain saw in there (potential spillage/leakage issues). That was about all we had in the truck besides my dad, myself and my rifle and maybe 50 lbs of clothes/gear.

Payload is pretty weak at a little over 1000 pounds. Door sticker says 1235 and 137 in factory installed accessories. I also have a bed cover that weighs about 60 pounds.

Looks like I’m good on front axel weight but about 110 over on rear.

We weren’t quite sure what all we would need to bring with the trailer rental, since we were used to the old trailer we owned, but I think we could shed some weight and leave some items home.

Now, if we shoot an elk, that’s a different story!
