Hi everyone. Curious to see if I'm alone in this, or if there are others. I bought a 2013 5.7L V8 Tundra 2 years ago Certified used, one owner. It had 65,000 miles. I use it as a farm truck, light usage, it just turned 70,000 miles. In Toyota land, it's a BABY. I drove it 2 days in a row, parked it for a day, then got in to go to work the next morning and it wouldn't start. (I'm not a car person, so please excuse the bad terminology) It would crank, like it was trying, but wouldn't actually start. A friend told me it wasn't getting any fuel. We tried changing out the fuel relay fuse, no go. So I had it towed to the shop and the fuel pump has failed. I'm told my truck is not one of the ones that has the "issue" in the recall. When I asked why such a young truck would fail, I get no answer, "maybe contamination or just bad luck". Anyone else have this happen to a young vehicle? I'm getting if fixed obviously, but I bought a Toyota thinking this crap wouldn't be happening, so I'm disappointed. Am I just super unlucky or is this a more common problem than Toyota is admitting to? Thanks!

Regardless of miles, 8 year old truck, parts can break. Maybe the previous owner ran the tank down dry several times, the fuel pump is cooled by the gas, no fuel and trying to start it could overheat and damage the pump.

Thanks, still seems so odd to me. I'm coming off a Prius with 250,000 miles that never had anything fail, so guess I'm spoiled!

Did they replace the pump and everything is OK now?

I would more suspect an issue like a bad fuel pump control module, or possibly some kind of flex fuel problem if that's applicable to your vehicle.

I had similar issues on my 2018. It would crank but hesitate to start. I went to the shop and everything else was fine which suggested the fuel pump. Replaced it and it took a few tanks of gas to get it back to normal. I am told this is a more common issue with FFV engines in that they can have issue after a fill up when the computer is trying to recognize the gas type/octane. I tried to deal with Toyota however my truck hasn't been a part of the recall. If you search "slow" or "hesitant start" you will find some threads on here. It could be this issue if yours is an FFV, or as the other post said, the part has low miles but it is 8 years old. I'm sure your truck will go for quite a while now without issue

Never had a pump actually fail on the 2bd gens. But a fair few fuel pump computers have due to corrosion

Possibly use your spare key, sometimes if the key itself gets too hot it won't work and trip the computer into thinking it's getting stolen I had the same issue..

It's not really "young", by the time they are this old age and maintenance matters as much or more than mileage.
Also, as far as keeping the fuel system clean, the additives in Top Tier might make a difference over long stretches of use. Octane does not matter.

Top Tier cleaning additives are in all Top Tier gas regardless of octane level.. if anything, lower octane 87 gas will more fully combust (burn"cleaner") in motors designed for it like that in the Tundra, vs 93 in the same motor.
Either way, I would doubt this is a factor in the OP's problem.

My fuel pump failed around 96k miles, but like it was said above, if the previous owner ran it too low often the pump could have overheated. (I bought mine used at 60k also) I'm now at 236k and haven't had another fuel pump issue.

If you can find evidence of that I would be interested, but I've never heard that before.

    https://www.sunoco.com/quality-fuel...rgents-in-top-tier-gas-save-engines-and-money

Everything I've ever read about Top Tier states or implies that detergents are equally in all octanes and added before the octane mix is finalized.
But maybe different manufacturers do it different ways.

I would side with bad gas, and how long fuel sat in the tank... I could say my original fuel pump is still in there, and I've been its owner since new, or 07..

Actually there isn’t. Octane is resistance to burn. Running premium in some engine (the tundra is not one of them though) can actually cause more carbon build up

all octanes have the same additive packages per the station

@MagicMeadows111 user @frichco228 nailed it on the head , between old vehicles and parts can break any time to the biggest killer of all fuel pumps witch is running the tank low on fuel. not only is the fuel pump cooled by the gas but the gas also lubricates the fuel pump. for best life of fuel always keep the tank 1/4 or more full.

FWIW I replaced the fuel pump on my 2011 at 99K mi with a Deatschwerks 255. Not because the stock Delphi failed but the fuel valve above the tank was leaking and in order to replace the valve, I had to drop the tank. So while I was at it, I decided to upgrade the pump even though my engine is stock. I'm glad I did, the truck runs better. Seems like it has more power. Could've been the fuel valve....dunno

The Delphi pump was made in the USA for whatever thats worth.

I know of 2 with newer Toyotas (1 with a 2018 Highlander, the other with a 2019 Taco). The Taco had a pump go out already, and the Highlander has a pump recall.

higher octane is only required when you have high timing or high compression. it just a pre detonation preventer , that's all point blank period.

I mean your welcome to believe what ever you want , but I was just stating the facts of higher octane gas to defuse "wife's tales"

also Octane is displacer in Gasoline meaning the higher the octane the less Gasoline per gallon that is in it.
High 120 octane fuel is in race applications or heavy boost application for that reason of pre detonation preventer. Aviation fuel is also a high octane fuel but still uses Lead due to high altitude and what it does engines. The reason EPA band lead was from the toxic lead bi products it crated , Aviation still uses it since going to a even more higher Octane fuel wouldn't be possible due to , to little fuel displacement ratio to octane. Also the reason all modern Commercial jets use Jet fuel is to get away from Aviation fuel.

the carbon that builds up in cats is from burning oil or very short multiple runs where the cats never get up to temp.

But if it makes you happy to put high octane fuel in your vehicle by all means go head and enjoy doing so. :);)

I’m pretty sure it’s because 94 is ethanol free, not because there’s more additives.

They don't have it on YT since its a MotorTrend OnDemand exclusive. But Engine Masters did the tests with a dyno on the same engine between the fuels on a couple different episodes defusing these "wifes tales"
