I’ve wrapped a few things and a heat gun does wonders. I think I might just do that so I don’t have to mask everything off.

Has anyone just taken the side moldings off?

Yes, but there are holes underneath for the clips.

No major updates. I’ve been battling a battery/charging issue for awhile now but hopefully got it narrowed down. I had a very small parasitic draw but I think it was just enough to kill the battery if I wasn’t driving it at least once a week. Battery and alternator have tested good multiple times on different testers. I even bought my own to check it randomly so I don’t have to drive to the parts store all the time. For $30, it works Damn good.

Originally, had a draw of 0.048ma. After disconnecting the illuminated portion to my aux light rocker switches, it dropped to 0.035ma. They say anything below 0.050ma is within in spec. I think that little extra draw was enough to kill it over a weeks time. After driving it around for a bit, retested the battery and it was good with 690cca.

I finally caved and bought a new hood latch grab handle. Mine broke when I replaced the grille and was beyond repair. I searched high and low at local junk yard with no luck. It was only $30 but it has been discontinued. The newer style grille required it to be extended a bit so I made it work. Works like a charm.

@SouthPaw where did you find that grill? Did you paint it at all? It looks great. I can't wait to see how your door trim comes out because I'm looking to do something similar.

Sorry buddy, I missed your message. I got both pieces of eBay. It comes black so no painting was needed.

    Grill:

    Emblem:

It’s been nice so maybe this week or weekend, I’ll tackle the side moldings.

So that grill fit a 2000? You just had to cut the ends a little like your photo shows?

Yup, that’s really it. It’s on page four of my build thread. Cut that piece out and it bolts in. You’ll need longer bolts for the latch handle too.

No major updates. I’ve been extremely busy with work and haven’t had time to do much of anything else. Finally got around to painting the side moldings, which has been on my to do list for awhile. I used plasti dip and they came out fairly well but may take @FirstGenVol advice and vinyl wrap them.

Old girl hit 190k today. I finally had the brake fluid flushed and got another alignment since I nailed a nasty pothole yesterday. The brake fluid flush has been the last item on my maintenance list and now I can say every fluid has been changed.

Replaced the worn out door checks today with some $12 Amazon specials that are for a 2006 Camry. While they do fit, they don’t ‘work’ well. I have decided to give the Mother Russia kit a try. I’ll be able to build them and slap them in my once they are done. I also removed the front seat after to clean underneath it.

Not the best job but decent for my first time using vinyl wrap on something bigger than an emblem. Need to redo the rounded edges but I’m happy overall. The plasti-dip I previously used came off in one big sheet which was nice.

*FYI - the paint is chipping around moldings.*

Truck also got another 7qt Rotella Gas Truck 5w-30 synthetic oil change and OEM Toyota filter. As always, did the transmission drain/fill so it got 3.6qts of fresh Valvoline ATF Maxlife as well.

Nice! I did mine as well this weekend, do you reuse your crush washer for your tranny drain plug? I’ve reused mike the last 4 times and started wondering if I should get a new one next time.

I have been reusing both. I did buy a new oil drain plug gasket while I was at the dealership buying the oil filter. Somehow,
it rolled off the lift rack and I couldn’t find the damn thing so I ended just reusing the old again. I plan on replacing both next time around, assuming I don’t drop and lose them lol.

Backup camera has always been a little wonky. For whatever reason, if I go through the auto cawrash, it stops working for a day. If I use the standard car wash, it’s not affected. When I put it in, I was in a hurry and didn’t do a great job of trimming the wires, tucking them away etc. I decided to tackle that today. I cut off all the connectors, shortened the wires to length and reconnected everything.

Tomorrow I will be rebuilding the door checks with the kit from Russia. Only took about two weeks to come in so not too bad. Can’t wait to finally not have to hold my door open with my foot!

Finally received my door check rebuild kit earlier this week and had some time today to put them. The TL;DR version, well worth it and they are SOLID. For the price, you can’t beat it. Highly recommended. Now my doors stay open at all positions and angles. I’m still getting used to it.

Here is the kit and contents. Comes with (8) fixators, graphite lube, and shims/plates. Took just under two weeks to come in:

My door checks were already out since I replaced them with units from a Camry but here is what my ‘spot welds’ looked liked. Someone at the factory got a little carried away and it was more welded than just a spot. I ended up having to drill out the weld and then use a dremel with a cut off wheel to open it from the side.

Lots of banging/prying and the first one finally opened. Don’t worry about the metal bending as it can be reshaped back to its original form.

Drivers side went together first. It’s hard to capture but my truck is at a pretty good angle sitting here and the door doesn’t move on the first notch or second notch.

Passenger side. Notice the garage door
    frame vs the truck door.

Looking at the old ones vs new, I figure the channel portion on each side is what wore out. It wasn’t till I looked at them for a different angle I realized what was wore. Old on the left, new on the right:

Noticed the drivers door had a few missing panel clips and I’ve always been missing some fender flare clips. Got some Amazon specials coming Monday to render that!

Thought I noticed a leak by my truck the other day but figured it was from someone else’s car. Today, I noticed in my parking space, there was a wet spot. I thought it was from the AC drain but it was too far forward. I crawled underneath and noticed it was coolant. After further inspection, I found the PS or alternator pulley had made contact with the lower radiator hose and rubbed a hole through it. I’m guessing the hose was defective as it was shaped just a little bit different from the replacement. I had it replaced when I had the TB/WP done so it wasn’t that old. Slapped the new one with some new coolant and she’s back on the road.

Yup. Since these are skinnier, seemed like the best placement. Also, that’s where the Tundras have them.

Well, no major updates. I posted in another thread about my recent run of bad luck but shit happens.

I recently considered selling the ol’ girl. With the run in of bad luck, used car market being high, cashing out with my insurance, I could come out WAY ahead. I bought this truck super cheap and ya, I’ve put some coin into it but I’m sure I could come out ahead. I was looking at some 2007+ Tahoes, Yukons and even some Eacalades. I’m a GM guy at heart but always loved Toyotas since my first truck in HS (1995.5 Tacoma).

After really given it some thought, I decided to hold on to her, at least through winter. I didn’t want to start over with another used vehicle, even though I do enjoy working on them and fixing them up. I didn’t want to start a project during winter and I know this Tundra through and through.

I plan on picking up the used hood this weekend and my guys in the shop were able to bend my original bumper back out to 90%+. I may or may not fix the grill, or at least wait till a later date. Anyways, she’s sticking around for a bit longer.

I love this truck and I’ve put some much time, effort, blood, sweat, tears and of course money into it. I have enjoyed doing it though so it’s all worth it.

Finally got my $100 junk yard special hood on today. It’s actually in really good shape minus a few paint chips which actually is fitting for the age/condition of the truck.

The more I look at it, I’ll probably replace the bumper sooner than later.

Well as many know already, I have moved on from the Tundra. Luckily for me, my dad ended with it and we still continue to further it's build.
    https://www.tundras.com/threads/well-fellas-its-been-real.98217/

It's pretty much setup how he would want it and I don't see him changing much on it. Unfortunately the axle seals that I had replaced in January of this year failed and they began leaking again. He replaced one side last Sunday and will do the other side hopefully this weekend. Next up, will be a quick scuff and shoot of the topper since the clear coat is starting to fade. He plans on doing raptor liner on it. As always, I will keep this updated as much as possible and plan on sticking around because I've really grown to love these trucks and this forum.

Other axle seal has been replaced. Will check them again in a few weeks to see if they are sealed, and if good to go, replace the shoes. Went with seals from Napa this go around.
