I went to a CAT scale at a Flying J, and I was 200lb over GVWR with far less gear but with my family and dog in the cab. It cost me $12.50. I don't mind being 200lb over GVWR, but I had originally planned within the next year to mount a tent to a rack that is compatible with my retractable tonneau. But I'm not sure how much more weight that would add. It's always more than you think. My truck handled 7400lb very well, but still...

Half of the people I talk to are telling me to just beef up the rear springs, and I'll be good to go. The others are telling me insurance could deny my claim in the event of an accident (even though I can't find any evidence that an insurance company has taken a non-commercial wrecked vehicle to the scales to determine if it was overweight in order to deny a claim).

I hate that the door jamb numbers are so low. When I bought it, I saw a truck that was bigger and stronger than my 4runner with lots of space. I didn't know it had about 400lbs less payload capacity. I mean, if I had four big dudes in the truck with me, I wouldn't be able to put a single thing in the bed. All this space, and I kinda can't use it all.

Anyway, I'm curious what you weigh with full water jugs, full tank of gas, and everyone in the truck. And also how your truck handles it all. After my CAT scale visit, I just assume that everyone with a rack, tent, water jugs, skids, etc. is overweight.

@Squatting Pigeon how would you rate the PITA-ness of assembling the Cali Raised Rack? Watching the video of you putting the rack in your truck after assembly; am I correct in assuming I don't have to take my tiedown cleats out of my rails to put this rack in?

It’s really not bad. Just a lot of different pieces. The initial setup just takes some time from getting everything laid out and then assembling it all. Once it’s together though, you won’t have to take it apart again to take it on and off the truck.

the cleats can stay, the feet of the rack only use up about 4” sections of the rack, so you can move your cleats to the middle between the feet.

Good info! I'll have to look up where they are in Texas and see if I can swing that way next time I visit my family down there. Try to coordinate my purchase with the visit and get it all in one shot. Still a long way out, but worth looking into.

My family is in the northern part of Houston, so it's not a serious detour. If I can get set to where I can buy the rack and afford a road trip, then that might just be the way to do it!

The thing that stands out the most about the Condor is just the simplicity in it. I can set it up and tear it down in two mins. Also the mattress that comes with it is quite comfortable. I know a lot of people upgrade the mattress pretty quick on other RTTs but I have slept on this one for a dozen trips and no complaints. The one "Con" if you want to call it, is the does weight right around 160 lbs so if you plan and taking it off and on you would want to develop some kind of system and storage for it.

Good info! The simplicity and rapid deployment are what drew me to consider the Condor and iKamper to start with, so it's nice to hear from an owner that it's as quick as advertised. As for the weight, from what I can tell I'm going to be dealing with a heavier tent with either of them, so it's boiling down to finer points for me.

I prefer the standard features of the Condor XL to the iKamper, so the only things still rolling around in the back of my mind is quality, and the extra cost options that the iKamper has going for it. Unless somebody has owned and used both; I don't think I'll get an apples to apples review on the quality. I've already seen several "reviews" out on the internet that have stuff wrong about these tents, so I don't put much stock in anything not coming directly from owners. The 2 big add-ons that iKamper has going for it are the insulation that can be added, and the fact that the tent material can be zipped out and replaced easily.

    Questions for you:
    1. How would you rate the quality of the Roofnest so far? Be critical and picky. I want all the dirt so I am not surprised or disappointed.
    2. As an owner of the Condor XL, have you had any trips where you would have liked an added insulation option?
    3. Roofnest says it's possible to replace the tent material in the Condor XL. Looking at your tent, do you see that as a feasible task?

    1. I would definitely rate the quality very high. Nothing feels "Cheap" on the Condor ( buckles, straps, the rain fly, zippers) We live in the Southwest and have been in a lot of dust and the velcro straps still hold strong, and you don't see any dust in the tent when its opened so that shows me its seals well once closed and on the road. My one picky minor thing is the pigtail for the interior and exterior lights. It twists to lock in so it doesn't disconnect but if you forget or try to pull apart it feels like it will rip out of the tent pole it is routed through, so just a word of caution when using that (especially with kids).

    2. We have camped as a family of 4 with a 50lb dog in around 40ish degree weather overnight and we were all definitely warm. Even without added insulation it still holds heat very well. I have never been "cold" in the tent.

    3. Depending on what tent material you would have to replace I could see it being feasible, if it is the rain fly or window awing, I don't see why not. If it was a part of the main tent, I'm not sure how easy or if it would be possible.

Holden @Squatting Pigeon, I'm going to pick your brain if you have a bit of time and if you have the mid height (10") rack. Do you know how much space there is from your bed to the top of the Cali Raised Bed rack? I'm just not certain if it'd be exactly 10 inches above the bed sides, or if it's a little higher or lower. I'm rolling around ideas in my head to keep my spare in the bed, and I would hate to get a rack or spare solution that conflicted with one another.

Good info, and I thank you.

I think the only thing that "worries" me would be the velcro attachment points for the hinge flap and the rain fly. I see that iKamper uses hard anchor points for these, and I like that, but not enough to justify the cost. Does the Roofnest velcro seem to be good quality that will last in your opinion? If it had to be replaced, does it look like it would be simple to do, and do well?

It’s 10.5” to the top of the t-slots rail that goes across the bed, and 9.5” to the bottom of it from the bed rail.

Have an Ikamper X cover and I keep my kayaks on top of the tent which clears the bedspace for other things.

Nice looking set up, but I'm after the larger hard shell tents. The iKamper Skycamp 2.0 and the Roofnest Condor XL are the style I'm looking at.

Perfect. With that I can get a measurement for my spare and make sure it'll fit underneath the rack/tent. Thank you.

This shift is my Friday (off at 6 AM tomorrow) and the first order of business on days off is going to be a brief budget review. I know I've stashed enough dollars to get my bed rack ordered, but the bigger question is whether or not I can get my RTT as well.

I got an email from Roofnest stating that due to the supply shortages and blah blah blah, they are going to be increasing prices on all their tents. No word on how much of a hike, either. This has me worried, as I had originally planned to try and order the Condor XL around Black Friday if there was a good sale price. Labor day had something like $200 or $250 off, and as nice as that is; it's still less than a 10% discount. If the prices go up by 10% I don't think that a sale will drop the price low enough to beat the current regular price. :(

Thus my dilemma. Do I postpone the rack, order the tent, and have no way to install it? Do I buy both and just pinch pennies super hard until I can recover with some OT in December? Do I just get the rack, and come to terms with having to save even longer to pay even more for the RTT?

I've noticed that almost everybody raises their prices each year, so odds are whatever you hold off on buying now will go up anyway.

Well shit. Wound up checking Roofnest.com to see if they were doing a BF sale, especially since they upped their prices by $100 at the beginning of the month. As expected, they are, but I did not expect THIS!!!!!!!! A new model in their Condor line that is aluminum! This means that you can do cross bars and such to carry a kayak or something on top. Bonus, they used a 2.5 gen (Turd Gen if you are being proper) to showcase it. It fits over the CrewMax bed! Only downside is it is slightly smaller inside than the Condor XL I've been eyeing and a hundred bucks more.

I don't know when I would have a treehouse on my truck, but if I did, that looks perfect. Maybe when the kids are both in college.

Depends on how old the kids are I suppose? Definitely like the thought of it being a grown up treehouse! :fistbump: For usability, I really think it's just a quicker way to have a tent for camping. No clearing the ground or debris or rocks, no uneven sleeping surface, no poles to fight with, etc.

Good to know! The only complaints I've seen is with the paint/coating flaking off the actual grill and making food dirty. Have you had any such issues?

    Slight soapbox here:

I think most/all RTT are grossly overpriced because of the rich hipster "outdoor" types that are throwing stupid money at things which makes retailers think that everyone has mass disposable income.

It's the same thing that happened with horses. Same kind of thing that's been happening to hunting, too. It's being turned into a ridiculously expensive and elite hobby. My state actually withholds a certain number of prime hunting tags from residents for the express purpose of selling to out of state hunters. Why? Because people with FU money like Joe Rogan or just huge disposable incomes will pay stupid amounts of money for them and that extra money is worth more to the state than their own residents are. The same thing is happening to camping supplies. It used to be that camping and hunting saved you money by providing cheap lodging for travel and cheap meat for your table.

I haven't used this one enough to get there. Before this, I used a friend's on a few occasions; that one was not thoroughly cleaned (ever?) so it had a fair amount of grease preventing that. The only flaking I could imagine would be from the wind screen. If that becomes an issue on mine, I will address it, it's paint. I doubt that will happen, because I don't over heat my gear. But pro tip, if you are running full throttle to boil water, you don't need the wind screen up. I do the high heat on a third dedicated stand alone burner. I think you are maximizing space, and another burner is stupid in your case. Cook on moderate temps, if you are searing or boiling, pull the screen. Or don't clean it, lol.

I see pans wrecked in my home because today's ranges produce high BTUs. I almost never go past medium. There are times, but it's specific and I know what and how long.

Long winded version of thats either not a problem, or one that can be fixed if it becomes one.

Edit: If you do want to rip high heat and hear a torch sound, this is sweet. 2nd tank or a hose splitter...

Well, the first purchase was made. @memario1214 hooked me up with a solid deal on a Cali Raised LED bed rack and I have ordered it. There goes the OT from that last check! :spending:

I am hardcore tempted to jump on the BF deal with Roofnest and their new Condor Overland tent is intriguing. However, I am committing to not spending anymore money through the end of the month. I'm going to focus on saving up for the other toy I am planning on for spring, and so the tent may wait a little. We'll see how the saving goes. If I can pull off both, in the spring I would love it!
