    Hi Guys,
Quick mod to the spare tire carrier that I did this week. I always seem to forget to check the psi in my spare tire until after the truck is loaded and i'm leaving for a trip at 4am. Then I gotta lower it down, knock off mud and grime, and hoist it back up again. Not a huge deal I know, but still a pain.

I wanted to install the spare with the valve facing down so I could check it real quick. Pretty easy to do. Grind off some aluminum from the wheel and grind some metal off the hoist.

The hoist unbolts from the top. You have just enough room to fit a ratchet with 11mm or 12mm extended socket between the carrier crossmember and the underside of the bed. The square nuts are tack welded to the carrier.

Have you tried driving with the spare yet? That’s probably going to throw the balance off.

I'm sure it will, but it's a spare. Probably wont drive more than 100 miles before I get the regular tire patched or replaced.

I don't do the 5 wheel rotation pattern.

I guess my only question is, how do you keep the anodized face from getting all jacked up? One of the benefits of it facing upwards is surface preservation. Dunno about you, but I don't like the of slaving over polishing wheel surfaces with Mother's M&W Polish to get things shiny in the event I need to use it. Nor needing to re-anodize or something due to road sludge and chemicals sitting on the face.

Edit: I don't want to sound all super negative. Kudos for creativity. This is definitely a well-thought out mod. I don't think I'd personally do it, but clearly serves a purpose of function and looks cool.

If I remember right. My valve stem is fine. But I have a plain steel wheel that came on the 2003 Tundra. Like on a base model with the hubcaps.
Does not look good. But I would not leave the spare on a long time anyway.

Another advantage of dropping the spare to check it is that you'll know that you can actually drop the spare (that it's not rusted in place). I once had to use bolt cutters to get my spare out. I have 3 Toyotas with the same mechanism, so now I make a point to drop the spare and lubricate the cable/mechanism once or twice a year.
