I’m doing a body swap on my first gen frame and would like to make a custom speedo/tach cluster. I’m using all of the wiring harnesses and fuse boxes out of my truck into the new car body. Will the truck still run and drive without a factory speedo/cluster plugged in to the harness?

@Jeff_5_7 may know. He's working on a gauge swap on his.

Unfortunately the truck is all apart, and the firewall is being measured to be cut, so I can’t find out myself and I’d like to know before I put the body on and wire it all

edit: I’m sure a 5.7 is much different electronically than my first gen 4.7

What swap are you doing exactly? Just a newer body on your first gen frame?

I am pretty sure my 2007 will run without a cluster plugged in however I have not explicitly tried. The cluster is just an "ECU" that displays information sent to it. I think all the signals come into the cluster, I cant think of one off the top of my head that is sent out from the cluster.

The truck might be able to recognize it is not there however and store a trouble code but it should still run.

All the 2nd gens use CAN bus signals to control most of the gauges. I think Toyota started this in like 2005. I would have to go look up how the first gens send out speedo and tach signals. What do you mean when you say you want a custom cluster?

I’m taking all the wiring from the cab/bed of my truck and threading it into a mk1 Jetta body to place on my frame. I wanted to make a cool race car dash but want to make sure the truck will still run without the oem cluster plugged in before I make that decision. I’m keeping everything OEM including evap system to make sure it will still all work and run…codes don’t mean anything anymore because it’ll be registered as an 84 Jetta so no more emissions or obd2 plug in for inspection
