Advice for buying '07 that just had Air injection pump work?

Found a good deal on an 07 tundra, carfax shows that all the maintenance has been taken care of on schedule. However in the last month, somebody bought it and took it into the shop two weeks later, and then sold it/traded it in two weeks after that. The carfax report shows that the following work was done:
    • AIR valve replaced
    • AIR injection pump replaced/repaired
    • Engine/powertrain computer/module checked
Ive heard it is a common issue for the air injection pumps to go out, so I was hoping I could get some tips for what to look for when i head to the dealership. Its only got 60k miles so I'm not sure if this is something the factory could take care of.

Ive also contacted the shop that did the work to see if they can tell me any more information.

If buying from a dealer, they may offer a limited warranty. Have someone you trust do an independent inspection of the truck. These emission related parts do fail and the repairs can exceed a $1K, the last owner may have decided to "cut his losses" or may been offered "premium" trade in dollars because of current used vehicle shortages. You don't say what a "good deal" is, but, my '07 has 72k absolutely trouble free miles and I expect to get another 10 years of service from it. So, a similar emissions repair for me would not be a show stopper.
(it's not likely the factory wants anything to do with a 14 year old truck regardless of the mileage or condition)

If the price is right and the rest of the truck is in good condition I would not be overly concerned about the air pump work. A lot of people who have problems with the air pump system just install a Hewitt Tech bypass kit rather than replacing parts.

They want 25k for it, still pretty steep but a fair deal compared to what else has been listed for the last month or so. I guess I was more thinking if there was a recall or something.

    That's good to hear, thanks!

Yea the prices in the northwest are outrageous right now. Tundras with 100k are listed for 30-37k

Sounds like the previous buyer gotta scared off by the repair. The air pumps are the only major problem with the tundras of that era. It's been said already, if you repair the pumps they can be quite costly. Seems most people only get about 100k out of them before they crap out again. If you live in an area that you can get away with it, a $400 bypass kit will eliminate the issue.

    $25k though...

What about torque converter failures and cam tower leaks? Those are not inexpensive to deal with.

I'm not sure what your budget is, but try expanding your search a bit. Try Carvanna or Vroom for some ideas on pricing, and remember that shipping is an option also.

The air pumps fail on every tundra (and every other vehicle that has air pumps).

I dont think the converter and cam tower leaks are as common. I suppose you can test drive the truck to check the converter. I can't recall reading that the cam tower leaks were ever a problem beyond being a leak. Some Toyota owners can be pretty whiny. Small problems are major problems.

My sister's 2016 Sequoia just went in for cam tower leak repair. I was surprised that this was still an issue at this point. As another point of reference, I had a 1991 F150 with a smog pump not all that long ago, and the original air pump was still kicking along just fine.

The torque converter issue is a 2007 to early 2008 issue.

Yea 25k for an 07 is wild, but I guess id rather take an old truck with low miles than an new one with more miles.

    Pretty things
I've never been fellated to "sweeten the deal" on a vehicle purchase. Of course I've only dealt with men which I did not find particularly attractive.... What dealership is this??

Anyway. Congrats on the purchase! I bought a 2012 with 140k for $23k all in, so yeah, the market is still crazy.

These definitely seem to be great trucks and I hope you thoroughly enjoy yours for a long time to come

Guess that is better than high pressure sales! Congrats on the new truck. As far as the air pumps go, It was deffinatly an issue with the 07-13 models. I had to have my 13 DC done. It cost about 1500 to do.

First time buying a truck with a loan... gonna be living off ramen for awhile trying to get this paid off asap. But damn this thing rips. I grew up with a 2.7l tacoma, and thought upgrading to the 3.4 taco was powerful...

But all and all Im happy with the purchase. Its the model and trim I wanted, and the 60k warranty is a nice piece of mind.

Hey if your already getting boned, might as well "get yours"

The high trim level of that truck will definitely drive the price up.

Low mile 4x4 with the red interior. Now I dont feel so opposed to the $25k. :spending:

I got quoted over $3K for the SAIP repair from a Toyota dealership. I just did the Hewitt bypass kit for $400 and no problems since.

If consider having the air pump system replaced a pro not a con. Now get the Hewitt bypass so it never fails again.
