Who here has installed a two-way radio transceiver in their 3rd gen and been happy with the results, both in terms of radio placement inside and antenna mounting outside?

I just use a Mag Mount and radio in a box or on my console and have been satisfied mostly.

I just made a 6000 mile trip with that setup and aside from no contacts to made anywhere west of Denver really it worked OK.

Good to see another Tundra from 0 land too!

Kenwood dm710ga under front seat, antenna on rago tailgate antenna mount.

right now faceplate and handheld just plugged in when I plan on using it, gonna pull dash in two weekends to put the rago dash plate on then the faceplate is going on a ram mount up there.

Works fine to hit repeaters, swr of 1.0-1.1 on the 2m but it’s 1.5 on the 70cm on my setup.

GMRS plans are similar, radio under front seat, faceplate on the rago. If I get a dedicated gmrs to go along with my kenwood it will be one with a detachable faceplate.

All you need for mobile & walkie talkies is a Technician Class License.
Actually, with a technician class license, there is NO CODE requirement and it's a 75question test.
Rules & Regs, some basic ohms law stuff, operating questions, I used to teach classes for getting your license, it's really not hard at all!
Here's a couple of links for study guides.

I have had my Advanced since 1990 and my Extra, since 2005.
If you have any questions, I would be happy to give you some answers!

Finally after having the truck for a year I'm beginning my install, I've got the antenna mounted and ran RF cable along with the 12VDC from the battery into the cab but haven't installed the radio yet since it's been hot. I installed the antenna on the passenger side of the truck mounting it to the body with a https://www.theantennafarm.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=8801 I think it'll work on 2007 to 2021 actually. I used Diamond's https://www.diamondantenna.net/c213snmo.html cable assembly and protected the cable with 1/4" wire loom split tubing https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07KDFD3WP?ie=UTF8 from Amazon. Also from Amazon I got this 10 second delay on relay https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0744HSF8P?ie=UTF8 so the radio won't turn on until after the truck is running so it won't get any surges from the start up. The radio install will pretty much copy what I did with my '15 Tundie https://www.tundras.com/threads/tundra-ham-radio.57715/#post-1509514 and I'll get pix when I get the whole thing done.

    Thanks I appreciate the offer!
I actually bought the ARRL Ham Radio License Manual for level 1 technician. I grew up with my Dad using them and now with everything so crazy in the world it seems like a good idea, plus it seems like it could be fun :blahblah:
