This bugs me.

What'd you lube the latches with? Glad it all worked out.

 

I had some PB Blaster so I used that.

 

I would have welded material on the latch and grind until it pulls tight, but whatever you did worked.

Now, anyone done a mod to have an open tailgate light on the dash just like the door open warning? Can't tell you how many times I've driven with my tailgate down unintentionally.

 

I had one of the cables come unlatched when loading an ATV in the bed on my 1st gen and bent the tailgate. It was easy to straighten. No, I would not use a 2x4. Just unhook the cable on the side that lines up correctly. With the tailgate open and you standing in the bed start putting weight on the corner without the cable support. Don't get too ambitious and jump on it, just start off light and keep checking. Having a friend to close and open it to check it will speed it up. Now if there's plenty of rust back there I would leave it alone.
