On the ubiquiti mesh network, how good is it at controlling which device accesses which node? On my asus AiMesh it works decent, but there will be times that i'll see that something upstairs is connecting to the node downstairs and has a pretty weak signal. Can you assign devices to mesh nodes on the ubiquiti?

WiFi doesn’t work that way really, it’s up to the client. You can try to do steering and probe delays but that’s more enterprise level gear.

You can change the client settings on some devices to be more aggressive in how often they look for better aps but for the most part they try to be sticky

I had the Google mesh and it is a joke. I pulled it and went with the Linksys Velop system and it works much better.

I have rarely needed to worry about it,the mesh works well and if using the Cloud Key you can watch where the devices connect and see what is happening in real time or in logs or both.

When using a robust mesh system it is just rarely an issue anymore in my experience.

Not exactly the same layout as the OP, but I own a house where there's a 12" wall between the rest of the house and the bedroom. Wife's office is at one end; living room/kitchen is in the middle, and master bedroom suite is at the other end.

    Here's what I did:

    1. Had a buddy run line from wall jack in the office, to wall jack in the living room (behind entertainment center).
    2. Same thing from wall jack in the living room to wall jack in the master bedroom suite.
    3. Bridged ISP modem, and output from it goes to...
    4. Ubiquiti USG3, handles routing instead of the Windstream modem. This then has two outputs:
    - Port 1 - goes to my wife's computer.
    - Port 2 - goes to the wall jack heading to the living room wall jack, to which is connected a....
    5. Ubiquiti Unifi 8-port switch. All but one port is plugged into the various stuff in the entertainment center. The last port goes to the other wall jack mentioned in #2, which leads to a....
    6. Ubiquiti Unifi In-Wall AP. This is in our bedroom.

Implemented this around Feb. 2019, and have had no issues at all. I've tweaked a few things here and there to maximize connectivity, but everything's been working fantastically.

This. I don't even do this @ my own house. I *can* (am an IT nerd) since I know how to fix the stuff.

BUT my wife WFH as well, as a healthcare professional, and Murphy's Law is such that it'll update in the middle of the day on her most important call (LOL) so I just manually update at a time of my choosing.

With this said, I did need to do a small bit of tweaking here and there, but it actually wasn't for any main devices - it was for our Ring system. Took me all of 1/2 hour a year or so ago. Since then, the only time the stuff has been rebooted is when updates have been applied by me. It's been rock solid.

So Costco has the Netgear Orbi for $400 and I rolled the dice with it.
I was extremely apprehensive about another mesh network after the horrendous experience with Google wifi.
Setup was pretty easy and I was only seeing about a 10% drop in speed from the main one to a satellite one. I can live with that.

All the nest cameras have a strong signal!
