Lots of codes for basically bank 1 of the engine, all cylinders misfiring on that side, both A and B camshaft sensors saying problems. It ran fine last week, started it up this weekend and it was idleing rough and all these codes popped up. I'm guessing either a rodent got in there and chewed through a ground wire on that side, or the timing chain skipped a tooth. Thoughts? Places you might look first? (Also, is that the drivers side of the engine?)

I just got done replacing head gaskets on my GF's subaru, and I'm not really financially keen on doing another overhaul quite so soon. If I can't find any wires that look chewed up or loose, any other thoughts on issues? Or if I have to replace the timing chain, what else should I consider replacing while in there? It does have almost 280k miles, the timing chain seems to rattle when first staring up, so I think it could be safe to assume it's looser than it should be.

Which engine you got? The camshaft correlation would have me worried about timing having skipped, or a failing oil control valve if it’s a 5.7

inspecting wires near the cam sensor would be the first step

Its the 5.7. I'm really hoping its not a timing chain issue, but I kind of feel like it is.. I don't knowbmuch about oil control valves, ill have to look that up.

I would look at things common to that side of the engine, like the fuel bank. Sure could be timing thing but if you didn’t hear anything unusual before it threw codes I bet it’s wiring related.

Have you figured it out yet @KissMyAxe1 ?

Not yet, haven't had much of a chance to look through the wiring. I started it remotely, so I heard it fire up, and nothing unusual, but I was in the house, so I could've missed something. It doesn't sound bad, but I can definitely hear it's not running like its normal self. A quick glance under the hood and I didn't see anything out of place. But I haven't looked at any of the hard spots, like behind the engine or underneath. Could be a wire loose or something back there. Theres some spider webs in there. Long overdue for a detail, inside and out.

I'm not seeing any wire damage anywhere. No trace of critters camping out in the engine. So I took the valve cover off, probably could use new spark plugs, and for having just about 280k miles, I'd say things look pretty good in there. I'm no expert, but the chain seems really loose. I'm pushing on it with a pry bar, but it takes very little effort to move the chain around, even pull it up a bit. Like the tensioners are totally worn out. I'm thinking its very possible the chain skipped a tooth.

Finally had some time to tear into this, got the timing chain off. All the tensioners feel super loose, but especially the drivers side tensioner on the main chain. The tensioners for the cam gears also felt really loose. I'm getting everything all cleaned up, get the timing reset and the chains on. I did check in the spark plug tubes, the valves never hit the pistons, thankfully. Everything looks pretty alright in there.

You can see the old drivers side chain guide is missing a fair amount of the plastic on there. I found the top piece, but I'm missing the rest of that, so who knows what happened to it.. lol Maybe the rest will turn up as I'm cleaning things out.

You can see the tensioner is not holding any pressure on the chain guide, but even the cam gears had a similar problem, all very loose!
