I am worried that I may know the answer to this but here goes.

I was doing a check over on my 2011 Tundra getting ready for my NY inspection and I found that the horn was not working. Did the usual checking of the fuse and wires to the horns and everything was fine there. When I tried again the horn worked.

The next morning I tried again and nothing. What I did find is if I turn the wheel a few degrees say 3 o'clock the horn works every time. So I am thinking there is a loose connection in the column. If that is true can I even service that with the air bag?

Any help will be apricated because would you know it my inspection is up at the end of August.

    Thanks

You can work around an airbag. You just want to disconnect your battery. I know that @2020Platinum has a video for a 3rd gen steering wheel tear down, but I'm sure there are others out there for the 2nd gen steering wheels.

I have same issue as you. Over the course of a year the horn barely works anymore when spinning the wheel to a certain position. I just ordered a clockspring so when I find time to install it I will check back with you to let you know my results. Good luck in the meantime.

Can you put one of these in the cup holder?

Yes, you can replace the clock spring yourself.

I have a non-functional horn, and a clock spring on the way from Olathe Toyota. I'll post up results when I've got it replaced

Just hang one of these in the back window. Much cheaper. :D

Common on the 2nd gens now that they’re aging, bad clock spring for sure. 15-20 minute job, just disconnect the battery and play it safe around the airbag.

Well today is the day. Got a friend coming over to help assist on an attempt to change this clockspring. I’ll post back later to let OP know the results. Hopefully I don’t fudge this up. Lol

You’re right. Got it done. Issue is gone. Horn works again.

Got it done. I removed the negative battery cable for 15 minutes prior following the tech thread on here. The new clock spring fixed my horn.

Either that or it was the honk fluid drain and flush. I'm so happy I got one made before 2019 when Toyota went and deleted the honk fluid cooler

Have a new clock spring on order from rockauto. Not a cheap part unfortunately. Thank you all for the help.

I ordered a 5 gallon jug of the best synthetic honk fluid I could find. It was cheaper that way and should last me forever. :monocle:

I installed the new clock spring yesterday afternoon and all is well now. I did almost give myself a heart attack though. I did not get the air bag seated correctly and when I hooked the battery terminal back up the horn started blaring. I had to wait another 15 minutes and then reposition it.
