Highly considering an ATV. Looking at 2 at the moment. 2000 Polaris 500 or 2006 Honda 500.

Initially i was hoping to just put it in the bed of the truck and use ramps to get it in there. Hoping to minimize the additional funds spent. Later down the road i can consider a trailer.

Will i be far enough back that i need a gate saver?

Or would it be better to go with something like this bed ramp:

Is it heavy enough that i will need air bags?

Was thinking of just the cheap atv ramps from Harbor Freight: [IMG]

I just bought a 2004 BRP 650XT. It weighs like 700lbs, and I put it in the bed of my truck. It sagged a bit but it was 100% fine. I used ratchet straps on the back bumper of it and anchored them to the bed anchors by the tailgate toward the rear of the bed. Using your bed is fine with ramps, it's a little scary backing out of it but you'll get used to it.

No problems with the weight on the tailgate?

No issues with the weight, and that BRP is heavier than either of the ones you're considering.

I had a can am DS450. I would load it in the bed without ramps. With my buddy, each of us grabbing one front wheel and hoisting it on tailgate. Then lift rear and push forward. For the way down just grab the rear handle quick and the quad will fall off without hitting the tailgate.
Then again it is a sports ATV so pretty light.

The tundra would actually drive better with a load in the bed.

They are nothing special, no frills atv's but they last forever and I hate Polaris.

    Brian,

I was very impressed with the tailgate on my CM and it can take that weight.

Only advice I will offer is getting a good ramp. I always had the tri-fold ones or something like it when loading ATV's or MX bikes. Get in the habit of always strapping them down as well. Once you see a large ATV slide out from under someone and pile up on top of them like a tub of crap...it is life changing.

    Like these special people:

One other thing that is certain with ATVs over MX bikes, the ATV usually lands on top of you in an accident, no matter how slow or fast one is going. It is about as consistent as pizza landing cheese side down when dropped.

That's why I bought it, no frills but gets the job done

Oh, I almost forgot. It doesn't matter what truck bed your going into because they will all fail, but put a 4x4 or something as a tire stop so the front ATV tires are not resting against the front bed. I have also seen people come in to hot and bust out the rear window of trucks as well.

No, it will fail over time if you don't put a block of wood in. The bed bends forward and can touch the cab. That is all I am saying.

As long as they are strapped down, you won't have a problem (as what happened in the video). I have seen some vet riders mess up bad.

Are you saying to put a block of wood to prevent the wheels from moving forward too far or wood under the tires for additional support?

I have hauled an ATV numerous times and have had no issues with the tailgate.
I have a block cut so the front bumper doesn't touch the front of the box. As others have stated, over time it will bend forward and touch the cab.
I also highly recommend tying down the ramps as I have had them kick out while loading. Not a pleasant feeling.
Last note, I love my Honda Foreman. It is a 1996 and have only done tires and installed a new starter yesterday. Workhorse and will run forever.

$500 used trailer is the way to go. Keep your bed space for a variety of things. Keep your visibility out the rear window. Otherwise you really need locked on ramps to be safe and ensure they don't kick. I've seen straps kick.

I hauled both in the bed and used a trailer and can tell you first hand trailer works better. Split the price with a buddy or neighbor if needed.

I kinda do have a trailer. Was a friends I don't talk to anymore. Last registered in like 2006 or so. Think I can get it registered without talking to the guy?
It's a fold up harbor freight trailer.

Weight will be fine. My advice is get a decent set of ramp. Nothing worst than trying to go up slippery ramps especially when the atv tires are damp or muddy

Apply for a home made trailer title. I've had to do that a few times myself. Make sure there is no vin number plate stickers on it.

I have a 2006 Honda Rancher. When I had my Tacoma I hauled it in the bed with no issues. Definitely put a piece of wood across the front of the bed like ColoradoTJ suggested.

I would also go with Honda, they are bulletproof.

I wouldn't worry too much about the weight. I haul a 600 lb Honda Rancher everyday at work, it lowers the rear end on my GMC 1500 maybe an inch or two. But the suggestion about a board or something in front of the tires is a very wise one, the front bed of my work truck is pretty well beaten up against the cab after one year of hauling it around. One of my coworkers took out his rear window with the four wheeler last year.
