    I know the formatting of the plates so the dmv will issue standard passenger formatted plates for your truck?

    Getting custom plates like the 1960s legacy plates would negate this because they are all formatted the same.

    I have no interest in doing this or trying to cheat anything just curious.

    Ok found some of my own answers.

    when the police run a plate and get the information there are codes for “type” and “vehicle”

    11= passenger vehicle
    31= commercial vehicle.

    the commercial vehicles also show weight of the vehicle.

    Still wondering if the dmv will issue new plates to a truck to indicate that it is now registered as a passenger vehicle

    They wouldn't, unless it's a commercial CHP enforcement unit, but those guys are usually chasing down big rig violators. I see non commercial plates on trucks quite a bit in CA, there may be another work around. Another thing a lot of people don't know is commercial plates allow for parking in commercial loading zones.

    Don't you have to replace the tailgate with a full door, or doors now with the camper??? thought I read that somewhere...

    I actually had commercial plates for this very reason on my 4-Runner back when I lived in L.A. in the late 80's-early 90's. I often needed to do business at City Hall and on street parking was nearly impossible and I didn't want to pay for parking at a lot. I had a nice free spot right across the street that was always available for me.

    I was planning on koving to idaho but too many Californians moved there. I was like why go to a place thats going to end up like the place i just left. Look a Colorado. Californias turned that state ble and texas orange. Austin and Houston looking more and more like los angeles with the homeless population going up as the make blue strongholds bigger. Its funny they move to red states to get away from the effects of blue policies only to vote for that same crap in the red states. Its like a virus, i swear forcing the mass exodus was done on purpose to change the political landscap in red states on purpose. But thats just mho

    Today I finalized getting getting my truck with a Leer camper shell registered as a passenger vehicle. My registration fees are now quite a bit lower. DMV was the least helpful in accomplishing this. Per the CHP officer I spoke with, CHP wouldn't be able to inspect my vehicle without the DMV sending me to them. The officer was helpful though and sent me on the right path to get it done.

    Thank you @rmvcard0303 as well for sharing your experiences with doing this. We spoke about it here: https://www.tundras.com/threads/california-tundra-owners-dmv.91480/ If anyone is having problems with the process, PM me and I'll be glad to share some advice.
