Footswitch Mount Ideas

The 2021 Tundra has zero factory switch blanks.

A $500+ switch panel (Switch Pro, etc.) is out of the question. They look cool, but I don't plan to run tons of auxiliary things.

And I really don't want to put a goofy-looking, non-matching, cheap-o toggle switch in my dash or center console. Not only do I not want to drill a hole in the plastic, given how the center console is oriented, I also can't seem to decide on a location that'd be convenient to reach, i.e. for frequent on-off-on sort of toggling so as to not blind oncoming cars.

So I thought it'd be fun to use a footswitch, but I can't really figure out how to mount that securely. I assume there's some sort of sound deadening material down there, and plowing some screws into the carpet seems like a fairly poor decision.

I could mount the footswitch onto something like this dummy foot rest and then affix that somehow. But even that idea I am not sold on.

Or I could go ditch this footswitch idea and go wireless, but then what am I going to do, hold the FOB/remote in my hand for that frequent on-off-on toggling? That seems awkward.

Here's what the footswitch looks like, it is obviously just laying loose in that area for now. The switch itself seems to work fine, if I can only decide how to mount it.

Does anyone have any ideas?

 

Old cars used to have a foot switch for the bright lights but then they moved the switch to the blinker stalk.
I had to install a foot switch because I couldn't get my foot up to the steering wheel.

But seriously though, I'd sit in the truck and figure out where your left foot rests normally and then move it a couple inches left of that and then mount it there. You may have to screw a mount to the floor under the carpet, then screw the switch to the mount with just the carpet in between to get a solid mount.

 

You don't have any at all under the center console below the AC controls? What trim level is your truck?

It's a Limited Premium TRD Off Road. Everything is taken by a factory button of some sort.

I just can't figure out how to securely mount the footswitch. The carpet feels like it's on a thick layer of sound deadening material, then maybe metal. But again, I am loathe to just drill away and hope I hit metal. I like the footswitch idea, but going wireless may be the ticket as I'm averse to using a third-party toggle switch. Then I can just velcro that FOB someplace in the console.

 

Some of the buttons I don’t use I just remove it from the panel but leave it connected and hidden behind the panel. For example, the auxiliary audio input, the tow button, and other things. I also use dual button switches to save even more space.

 

that is a good point, and idea.

I have my AUX input removed from the dash and connected behind the panel to my audio source permanently.

I use that blank spot for a hardwired dual USB charging spot.

 

The link I posted would work. The remote is like a garage door opener, it clips onto the sun visor.

 

I like the idea of a foot switch! I had one on my first ride - a '78 Chevy Blazer, and they certainly are convenient to get to.

I'd try putting a thin block of wood under the floor mat and screw the switch through the mat into the block. It should be stable due to the weight and fit of the mat, but reversible should you change your mind.

Use some quick disconnects on the wiring, and you'll still be able to pull the mat out for cleaning.

Let us know how it works, If I ever get around to putting more lights on my truck, I'm going to borrow this idea!

Here's what I would do:

Find where you want to place the switch.
Pull carpet up.
Mount switch with 2 self tapping screws straight to the floor.
Position carpet back over switch, mark where switch is.
Remove sound deadening pad from carpet where switch mounts.
Reinstall carpet, might be slight hump still. But you'll most likely not notice it under your floor mat.
When ready to remove from use, pull switch out, reinstall the 2 screws, no one will ever know you had a switch there....

Now your switch is hidden and out of sight. Most police cars have this same switch mounted in roughly the same spot, has to be depressed to remove vehicle from park. Helps keep unwanted joy rides from happening, and works great.

The cathartic nature of thinking out loud on the interwebs delivers again! Thanks all for your input. I do like the idea of ditching something like the aux input (which I do not have) in favor of a button, that's a great suggestion.

I rummaged around in my box and found a small brace that aligned with the holes on the footswitch and the trim piece. Lucky me! Drilled it out just a hair and it fits great. I don't like the way the wires are exposed here, but I think this picture is a little misleading; the wires aren't going to get bumped by regular in/out foot traffic (I think...). Pushed the excess up behind the plastic, that little push nut might need to be replaced with an actual nut but insofar as drill-free placement goes, this seems like it may work.
