    Hi everyone,
Just wanted to see if anyone knows more about what's actually happening with the current rear bumper issue which triggered the recall.

I was supposed to pick up my Tundra this past week, but the dealer called me the night before saying they could not release the truck because it had been recalled.

Now I have no idea when the new delivery date will be (days? Weeks? Months?) and very vague answers to the effect that Toyota still has to release the parts.

    Does anyone know:
    - whether toyota actually has a fix yet? (I am not convinced that they do)
    - if they do, why is it taking so long to get the parts out?

Maybe it's just me, but the fact that this is still without a solution after nearly 2 months is unbelievable.

    Any insight would be great!

    Thanks.

The Tundras with the back up sensor option are being recalled because in order for the sensor to work, you need a non-metal based bumper. Those bumpers have the propensity to break if you put too much weight on them and that's why they are being recalled. No ide on the time frame because I have the SR5 with a good old steel bumper.

The puzzling part for me is that they have obviously solved the problem, as production from very late December 2016 and forward is not recalled, so they have fixed it in newer production. Perhaps they are having a problem creating a cost-effective retrofit of the solution to the already manufactured models.

A little of this and a little of that.
There is relief in sight. I received a call from my Toyota service writer last week stating that he wanted me to come in to get the bumper fixed as they have the part in stock now. At least that's what his message was on my v-mail.

I would think that if we had them here in Vegas then most everybody else should have them or be getting them real soon.

    Thanks everyone for the responses.

I know of a Pro under recall. Obviously sans back up sensors.

Does it have chrome metal bumpers or the color matched plastic ones?

If this recall is anything like the Tacoma leaf spring recall, it could be months of waiting, since my 2016 is on the list, I'm just careful with the rear bumper.

Mines arrived on 2/18 and still on stop sale waiting for recal parts, and I ordered my Platinum 4x4 in late September of 2016. If it's gonna take any longer may just cancel and wait for the 2018 model in sept of 2017

I still have no view from the dealer as to when the truck will be fixed and then able to be licensed. They said maybe mid-April, but even that is still a guess.

I just had my first service done yesterday and inquired and my service manager said he had no ETA yet on the fix. I bought mine on 9/30 before the recall came out.

I saw the fix yesterday. There is a metal bracket that supports the plastic rear end caps and still allows the use of BSM. When they'll get around to fixing the recalled vehicles is anybody's guess.

And for affected Tundra VIN# vehicles sitting on dealer lots, from what I understand, they are all still "unlicensable" until they have the recall fix applied.

AFAIK, at least in Canada, the fix is still with the regulators... and until it has their stamp of approval, all vehicle VIN# flagged as affected cannot be licensed. A dealer cannot even move the bumper from a newly arrived Tundra (with the new bumper) to an affected Tundra and get it licensed.

So it really still appears to be a (frustrating) waiting game for those waiting on a vehicle with a VIN# in the affected range that is not already licensed.

The recall does not affect ALL new Tundras, just those with the 'resin' rear bumper bracket. Affected are VIN specfic.

When I was at the dealer for service, I asked if the holdup was making the sensors work with a metal bracket was the issue and they said most likely that was the holdup. I'm not to worried about it, I use the tailgate to get in the bed

Took my 2016 in for service yesterday and to have the recall done. Got a call yesterday evening that my truck wouldn't be ready. Supposedly they are having issues with the back up sensors. Dealership says that this is the first recall that they have performed.

Just called for an update this afternoon. They are still having issues and trying to recalibrate the front and rear sensors. Hopefully its done today..

One of the reasons I went with the SR5 since they couldn't sell me a Platinum.

Just picked up my truck. Took my local dealer about a day and half to complete the recall. Im sure that they weren't working on my truck the entire time, but this is how long they had it.

When I picked up the truck I asked the service writer what the issue was (why it took so long). He told me that they had to recalibrate all the sensors. I asked which ones exactly (BSM or Sonar) and he said both.

Again, my truck was their first time completing the bumper bracket recall so I would expect that they will get faster.

the factory bumper is junk anyhow. Takes very little impact to blow it apart. It provides no protection for the rear quarter panels or tailgate. If you ever break it or need to replace it, go after-market........

Indeed. Brittle plastic. Am jealous of the gm trucks with nice step bumpers.
