Yeah, for sure. I usually top off each morning before hitting the road if possible.

It always seems to be an asshole that tries to squeeze in somewhere that blocks you. Like, can you not see my big ass?!

Usually it is the same guy who is changing lanes suddenly in front of you fast and furious style, but in his 88 civic that is neither fast or furious with the mismatched spoiler and wire rims.

He has no clue his Momo steering wheel and Sparco seats won’t help when 11,000 lbs of gross weight steam rolls him.

Feel free to chime in on my latest dilemma, I tend to beat these things to death in my head. :deadhorse:
Looking to possibly get my wife another suv in the next 1-3 years, keeping the Sequoia for a 3rd vehicle unless the dealer offers a crazy trade in price.

I'm trying to think about cost of ownership for the next 15-20 years. Purchase price, maintenance, gas, resale after that period.

    • We buy a '22 4R Pro, still built in Japan. Enjoy the dependability, fun factor and don't worry about the mpg. Major bonus that it'll be the last year of the 4.0L 1GR-FE
•Get a hybrid Rav4 or Highlander, similar maintenance costs, over 2x the mpg as the 4R, very good reliability, 10 year battery warranty. Lower resale value than the Pro.
•Buy a used 4R, 2011-14ish and hope to get 10+ years out of it relatively trouble free.
•Final option, save the cash and keep driving our reliable 04 Sequoia, continue the preventive maintenance.

The only time constraint issue would be if we went with the Pro, probably would order it early 2022. Any other option could wait.

    Any and all advice appreciated!

If you get one of the other vehicles and keep the Sequoia do you really think the Sequoia will get driven? If I did this and kept the Sequoia I am sure it would end up sitting because the other option is more fun to drive, better tech, etc. Just something to think about if you don’t have three drivers. End up paying insurance and maintenance for a car that sits.

I never have used resale in factoring a vehicle purchase. Once I’ve paid it off and gotten my use out of it, whatever I get back is a bonus. Sunk cost. I also typically keep rigs for 10+ years and 250+k miles. I don’t buy used for myself or wife any more either… I’m past dealing with someone else’s undisclosed issues.

Through that lens, it then comes down to what the true needs and desires are: bigger more off-road capable rig with relatively poor mpg?
Smaller fuel efficient rig that’s more of a glorified station wagon?

my wife drives a forester because she wanted something smaller than her CX9 but every thing else all looks the same…no matter what brand it is. Her next rig will likely be a 4R - she had a ‘93 when we got married and she misses it. But we were broke and young and couldn’t afford to keep it when we had kids and needed something bigger (hence the CX9)

I’m in a similar but different situation. I’m looking at what to do with my truck in 10 months from now.
Since this is your question…the 4R is awesome!! My biggest regret Toyota wise was trading my 14 in on my 15 Tundra. It took about 5 years to get another one. If they are getting rid of the 4.0 I would snag one up then.
As for the Pro part I’m not 100% convinced they are worth the extra cash…unless you know you aren’t going to mess with it after you buy it(because it’s the wife’s isn’t a guarantee it won’t be modded). A TRD off road premium is still more then most need(option wise) and you could still get lift/wheels/tires for cheaper then a Pro. I still have yet to try crawl control on the wife’s. I couldn’t even get it to get stuck in that snow/ice we got this winter.Ironically enough she is on the way to the beach right now…but I’m stuck at work. This is why it hasn’t been out on the sand yet.

Edit: PS. I may be interested in a Sequoia with some fresh Ironman suspension.

I use this one the same as some others above and have liked it.

    Outland firebowl 823 19” bowl
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007UMD2L0

The 863 is the 21” and the 883 is 24” but they are all the same BTU 58,000 just depends on how big you want it. I read lots of reviews that said the 21” and 24” top made the flame spread out and didn’t feel like it put out as much heat, the 19” had a taller “flame” that seems to be the case but I haven’t used the others to know for sure. Good enough for s’mores and sitting around at night when you can’t burn wood. I use a 5 gal. tank and it lasts about 4-5 nights and a couple mornings.

Quoting separate to keep things clean.

I'm kind of ocd about having low milage vehicles so I'll definitely daily the Sequoia to work for at least a few years. 40 mile round trip commute, keeping miles off of the Tundra.
Insurance and maint is ballpark, $800/ year. Gets a couple mpg better than the Tundra.

This seems like the choice! Looks like it is pretty easy to change this from the short hose with a regulator to a 25ft hose with a quick disconnect I can run off my outdoor kitchen on the trailer. Wife is on board so I’ll be placing an order when we get home so we have it for the next trip.

I typically don't factor resale but I have a hunch this tried and true '22 4R will end up being like the 06 5.9 cummins, and your '21 Pro. They are saying a turbo 4cyl will replace the 4.0, with the total redesign for MY '23. Just my tin foil hat prediction though :D

We definitely don't need the Pro's capability. Makes it a little hard to decide because we can adapt to any 4x4 suv. That's if I fit, (vertically gifted). Hunting out of the Rav4 will be a little challenging though.

Yeah, I agree the Pro probably isn't worth it on paper. I don't want to mess with it at all, which is why the extra 6k over the ORP would be worth it. Plus, I would get to tell everybody and their brother I own a Pro
    J/k, I hate attention.

I'll give you first forum dibs on the Sequoia if we go that route.

True. There is that Pro thread that was started I think by this guy from AZ who moved up to OR…not going to drop any names lol.
If I could or had to get another 4R for whatever reason and money wasn’t an option. I would pass on the Pro for one reason…that silly roof rack. WTF Toyota? I am just not a fan of it. Other then that I would take it. That’s just me though.

Thanks for the dibs. I appreciate it.

I’ve seen a lot of them for sale.

I know my wife’s ‘93 4R was really small inside, which is part of why we got rid of it - couldn’t fit two of the little kids car seats side-by-side in the back for shit.
That and it always rode like it had a load in the ass end, and back then I didn’t know enough to actually look for a lift kit that would fix that. That generation V6 wasn’t great either.

Seems the newer ones are bigger and roomier inside.

Unless you want new, I'd keep the sequoia and save the cash. It's the same size as the 4R. Already paid off. And you know it's history.

If wanting new I'd go 4R pro or even new sequoia due to your size and wanting comfortable ride. No traction control so is the pro in a sequoia worth it? Get a limited and put a better suspension on it.

Tough choices. Keep us posted on your decision.

I like your points, we love the Sequoia and I have a stack of parts for it's refresh.

The Sequoia Pro doesn't come with traction control? How do they get around that for safety?

Same as the tundra pro. And I may have used wrong wording. The 4R and taco pros have crawl control. Another option instead of 4 hi and 4 low. Tundra and sequoia don't.

Yeah to bad the Tundra and Seqouia don't get the Atrac,Crawl control, or the multi terrain switch.

A really awesome video that explains all 47 different possible 4wd modes for the 4R.
Start at about the 5 min mark. I need to bookmark this video as I never get to drive ours so I always forget all the stuff after 4hi and low.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELw7xhWHNnY

Also starting in 2020 the 4R had TSS added to it.

Ha… 4R problems. I forgot it had an Elocker.

Now to figure out a good reason for the wife to “borrow” my truck next Thursday. This thing needs to go to the dunes.

Casey I might be a bit biased but they are pretty nice. I’m not 6’7 or even 6’4 but I have a friend that can’t get a Tacoma or a Tundra due to his height. He is a actually trying to find a 4R pro right now. He is probably 6’3’ish. You sit pretty low in the 4Runner. I realize you aren’t that tall either but for our tall friends that are reading. It’s like a go cart. We used to find away to get in front of him at red lights then roll the back window up and down(my tundra and another coworker’s 4R) cause it would piss him off.

I think it was a double cab. It was years ago he came down to Toyota while I was there. He has a Sierra 1500 right now he is thinking of getting rid of.

If I remember right he was trying to make sure his step kids could sit behind him and there wasn’t enough room in the tundra…or at least he felt that way. So he ended up with a crew cab Sierra.
