    Hello all,

Looking to brainstorm ideas out there for a DYI gantry system or hitch mounted hoist to install and remove a 150 lb Roof Top tent on and off the rig.

The tent is going to mounted on a cab height bed rack and extended over the cab of the truck. The issue is I’m looking to build a hoist of some kind of contraption to get tent on top of truck by myself, remove the tent, or switch it over to the 4-Runner at times, or set it on a dolly to moved to the back yard or wherever.

I have NO ROOM in the garage for storage of the tent nor am able to install a hoist in the garage to lift the tent off the truck.

If anyone has came up with any interesting ideas for this issue please post them.

    Thanks

I’ve seen things like these 2x4 “slides” used and then you catch it at the bottom with a hand truck or dolly, wheel it where you want for storage.

Any good size trees in your driveway that you could hang a hoist from?

Build a gantry out of wood to that folds up like a sawhorse for storage? Basically a giant, three piece, sawhorse.

Apparently, there’s no way to search for content posted by banned former members, but the content remains if you can find it. @Pinay and someone else came up with solutions for this. Anyone reading this got your memory jogged and can find that and post a link?

Soon to be 4WC Raven host. Mods to come.
Maybe a little more involved than a strong buddy and a 12 pack. But I like projects...

Two scaffolds - one each side of truck. Then use a ramp system like the one above connected to scaffold. Mount a cheap boat bow strap winch with bracket to top of opposite scaffold. A couple of quick pin removable crossmembers across the top of truck connecting the scaffolds.

Winch the RTT up the slide and across the crossmembers. Prop up back of RTT with a 2x4 block of wood - remove crossmember. Do the front done.

I've got metal fabrication tools so not a big deal if you have a welder and cutting tools. Fun project. Probably not to pricey if you find used scaffolds.

I’ve always wondered if a hitch mounted game hoist would work.

Rent a trailer, go to a spot that has a tree available, use ladder or stand on truck to attach hoist to the tree. Hoist off, lower on trailer. Trailer back to tree and reinstall.

I don't know where I heard it but you may want to look into a "drywall Hoist" The max weight may be close but most of them lift 150 lbs up to 11ft and are wide enough for large drywall. You can get a cheap one for around 250.

Thanks for all the replies and ideas.
I don’t have any trees available to lift from at the house. So that one is a no go.
I thought about the scaffolding or even finding one of those shelves they use at HomeDepot or Costco that would be wide enough to drive the truck under.
Wanted something a little more controlled then sliding it down any wood. But good idea.
I actually looked at a Sheetrock hoist at Harbor Freight but thinking it maybe little to unstable sliding 160#s off the roof and onto that without possible hurting the truck.
I’ve looked at trailer hitch hoist but they all seem to be not tall enough or have a good enough reach.
I think I’m kind of leaning towards building a Gantry. I was thinking about building it out out Unistrut which could be unbolted and broken down, stored outside without rusting and portable, and possibly lighter then a buying a full Gantry made from steel beams.
If anyone has any good ideas on how to go about building one please post.
    Thanks everyone.

Build something to hang a Chain Hoist and just use your pinky to raise and lower the tent as needed.
Chain Hoists are the bomb,I use them to mount huge Monitors by myself in Sports Bars as needed.
You want one with a Chain Fall and not a Ratchet mechanism to match whatever the drop is of your center mount point.

You can make almost anything with strut!

Telespar would be ideal, galvanized, telescoping sizes, equally spaced drilled holes. Easy to cut with a friction blade on a miter saw, reciprocating saw, plasma torch, etc. For those who don't know, it is commonly used for road signs. I buy some from a scrap recycling center for various projects.

Make friends with a welder, apply liberal amounts of beer and tacos to said welder, supply some some steel, chain hoist/winch/pulley of your choice, problem solved. Add some concrete and paint to the list if you want it permanent.
