Like @Darkness said they just click on. So you'd cut and deburr the copper then just push that fitting on.

The expansion tank can literally be anywhere in the cold water side. Doesn't have to be right at the water heater.

Also those compression fittings are awesome. I don't think we use anything else very often at work anymore.

Something like this, and a good supply of fittings, seems like a worthwhile investment for a do-it-yourselfer.

Only comment on shark bites: sometimes they don't like to come off and can be a pain in the ass if the case. The little tool they provide works like 99% of the time, though. I had to use them often when working for an irrigation install company. Saved a ton of time, aside from the 1% where they didn't. Shark bites are also pretty pricey.

Watch a youtube video first. It really is not that bad. Go grab some copper and practice once.

I would move this into the trees so you don't have as much maintenance on the trail.

Ya'll seem to be forgetting that I am a self admitted mangler. I destroyed a perfectly good transmission pan. It seems you all want me to die.

I agree. It's not as bad as you think, and if you mangle, you just trim the copper back and start again. Get more connectors and couplings than you think you'll need.

Fair enough. I've been looking at Bradford White heaters online. I may have to go by in person to see how they are priced.

I just got my 3rd quote back for replacement and they want $1,600 for a new 50 gallon heater so still in line with previous quotes.

Those are really cool for tight spaces but I'd never buy one. A mapp torch costs about $60 and I've yet to burn a house down.

And you need a mapp torch to light your charcoal grill anyways.

I put my water heater in myself. Cut the copper pipes and bought ready to go sharkbite connectors with a valve for the cold water side. Easy swap. Found out later your supposed to have a permit to change your water heater. Weird.

    Don't use the mamba

You would need to invest in a few tools to do this. You will at minimum need a copper tubing cutter. You can get away with using a hacksaw if you're careful but that can make it more work. A good tubing cutter will make clean cuts without deforming the pipe.

If you use shark bite couplers with male adapters you can then use braided supply lines or even the corrugated copper supply lines. ALWAYS use an adjustable wrench to tighten those supply lines, never channel locks. With channel locks you can squeeze the nut and it will never seal.

1600 is not bad if you don't want the headache. I suppose the prices have gone up in 10 years. A 50 gallon Bradford should cost between 800-900 at a supply house. Other parts (gas hose, flue vent, water connections) will be around $100. So DIY or spend $600 on a plumber.

Nobody pulls permits for them. Its surprising how quickly permits are required for plumbing. I never pulled permits unless I was doing a full trench sewer replacement. I did a lot of full replacements using the pull method and the liner method without permit.

A few years ago one of our plumbers did just that. He was doing something under the sink and it caught fire later. I think he lit the insulation inadvertently or something.

Insulation goes up fast. I was working with a guy who lit the insulation in a garage. Hes lucky I had buckets of water and poured one on it. I pulled the wet insulation out after.

Pictures never do it justice... just after a rain. That sweet, wet, earthy smell in the air. Lingering, calling to me... "Noah, go forth. Leave the shackles of the modern world behind. Return to nature, from whence ye came..."

Find a 4runner for dirt cheap. Throw it together and my uncles buying it off me. He wants a smaller suv for camping. 3rd gen runner fits the bill
