Not sure how many, if any, of you use a Magic Bullet/Nutribullet but I personally would recommend for you toss them out if you do and go get another blender. My wife had ours blow up on her on Monday and got 6 lacerations on her left hand. If you think about it; it’s a pretty poor design. To have to push down towards a blade to turn the thing on. Makes no sense. Anyway, here’s a video showing examples. Pretty crazy the thing will blow up with just water alone. Hopefully this post spares at least one person

We used to have a generic version of that... they are really a terrifying design if you have someone not thinking about what they are doing. A great example - my wife was trying to figure out how it worked and started to push the base onto the motor... without the freaking cup/shell on it. I freaked out on her before she could activate the blades. She probably would have lost a finger doing that shit.

Hope your wife is ok, Nick. And thanks for posting this.

we use the Ninja version, but it's all the same design. So, I'll be telling my wife tonight that we need to get something else with a better design. thanks for the video, pretty f'd up.

Thanks, Jake. Glad your wife made it out unscathed! Most of the time when people are using those things they're doing ten other things at the same time and don't have full attention on blending.
If you look at the threads on the base, there's maybe an 1/8" of plastic holding the base to the cup. I'm no engineer, but i'd be willing to bet over time (couple years) that plastic becomes weak and just a little pressure from inside the cup forces that plastic outward enough to allow the cup to blow off.

Wife's all good, just bandaged up. Appears to have all sensation in her fingers and hopefully Mederma will fix the rest. I thought for sure she lost at least one finger. This is the scene I came into after hearing the bang and screaming (she was blending baby food in the downstairs bathroom because our convection oven was running and would have popped the breaker) :

Oof. Glad to hear your wife will be OK. The similar designed one I had twist locked in and out, you didn't have to hold it to blend.

The Nutribullet is a twist lock too. But to get it into the locked position you need to depress the three sensors, or whatever they are, to get it onto locked. So the blender is already running before its locked. In my wife's situation, it was literally the split second between going from sensor depressed and locked. The operating instructions for the thing should be "1) with your blender unplugged, lock the jar into position 2) once locked into position, plug the blender in using a 20ft extension cord"

And for the record, I always view those videos as a bunch of ambulance chasers etc. etc. The video I posted even comes off a bit like that too. However, this one is a little different. It's just a sh*tty design and probably shouldn't be on the market. If this ever happened in a R&D kitchen at a food manufacturing facility, I'm pretty sure OSHA would be all over it.

I have had one of these for about 4 years, I actually just had to replace it. The new one isn't as well made as the original one. It does build up enough internal pressure if you over fill it past the line to start leaking but I have never had a problem with mine. I blend ice, 2% milk, dry oats, chocolate peanut butter protein powder, and natural peanut butter all at one time...but that's all I use it for. I like to call it the healthy version of the Sonic Reeses Peanut Butter Cup Milk Shake and man is it good.

I appreciate you posting this. I don't have a Nutribullet, but as others have said, I've got a similarly designed one - ALTHOUGH what I usually do is screw things in, lock it into place, and THEN plug it in.

You have to bite "the bullet" and get a Vitamix blender... They are super durable and safe. Wish the Mrs a speedy recovery.

    Function before sparkle.
Thanks for posting this. My wife and I discussed it and we will be looking for a replacement. In the meantime, it will be locking it in place unplugged and unplugging to turn off.

Vitamix is great but their cup/single serve solution leaves a lot to be desired. But no biggie just make a batch and freeze what you don’t use

Ouch! Thank you, I had no idea.

We use an old beehive blender and a newer Ninja smoothie blender.

I got them the Ninja by accident when what they wanted was a bullet type blender. We all love my mistake- me even more so now!
