I went to the Toyota dealership to get some 75w for my transfer case gear oil and they told me they almost never use that weight of oil and that they use 75w90 for transfer case and differential fluids. This sounded strange to me because Toyota says to use 75w for the transfer case and 75w85 for the differential fluid  but I’m not an expert on fluids and how they work. Any feedback?

Lol. You should tell them to read their own freaking manual.

I don’t care what a dealer would say if it contradicts the manual. I’ll trust the engineers over a dealer or service manager any day.

Seems like somewhere I read that if the proper oil wasn't used it may cause problems with the actuator getting a bit sticky. I'll be going 75w.

Use the Ravenol MTF3. It is cheaper and the same as the Toyota 75W Transfer Case Fluid. You can do this job yourself in about 25 minutes. Front Diff, Transfer Case, and Rear Diff. I used Amsoil 75W-90 in the diffs.

This! I'm on my 3rd fluid change and closing in on 100k and have had no issues using Ravenol MTF3.

Dude how awesome is that cap on those.....you don't even need any fancy contraptions to get the fluid into the case

Yeah makes fluid changes quick and easy, add Amsoil easy packs for front/rear diff's and it's a no brainer to do it yourself.

Yeah I am gonna do this myself I was picking up the gasket kit for it and I figured I would grab the 75w from the dealer but he said they don’t even carry it. It was kinda strange

The caps are amazing! It's the same oil I'm running in my AWD t-case, no issues and way more reasonable than the ridiculously overpriced Toyota branded 75w...
