Critters got me for $205.11

So Tuesday night I'm in my garage and come out to my dog just furiously hunting my undercarriage and front wheel wells. I try to call him off assuming he saw a critter run under my truck and didn't see it come out the other side. I let him hunt it, I pop the hood look around bang around and nothing. Dog won't give it up. I gave up. I drive to work Wednesday no issue. Hop in the truck to head home and bam, CEL, front collision assist disabled, trailer brakes not working, I'm not pulling anything. I have a cheap ass OBD reader and nothing pops up. To the dealer I go. Just got word they found chewed wires and said that'll be 205.11.

I could've bought a damn awning for that price. Or a new mattress for the RTT. Insurance deductible is $250. That doesn't help.

Anyone had any success using anything like rodent spray or some McQuiver stuff to keep the critters out?

Yes, that is a good price compared to the horror stories I’ve seen around here. Peppermint oil and they have these devices you can hook up to your battery to keep rodents away as well as all the holistic approaches.

 

How do you feel about cats?

 

Hate them with a passion. And I'm sure our dogs would rip a cat apart like the big old 20lb groundhog they killed yesterday. Not before the hog got his teeth into their necks and made a couple good gashes.

 

Ever single time I hear electrical issues on a Toyota, first thought is rodent damages. Often it is true.

 

Peppermint for the cure. I’ve got some in my truck right now to keep mice out. I have to park outside and had one got in somehow back when it was cold. Luckily saw the evidence the next morning and fixed it right then. I keep a small open dish with two cotton balls in it. I pour the peppermint oil over the cotton balls until they are soaked. It lasts for weeks before needing more added.

 

Peppermint it is! Look at that, Tundras. with a mod that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars!

 

I use the Fresh Cab packs in my boat while it's in storage and since using haven't had any issues with mice. Not sure if your situation warrants the use of them but they've worked for me. Planning on putting them in my garage starting this fall.

Peppermint essential oil seems to help if it's mice. For squirrels (that was my problem), traps and bitter apple spray (mostly traps) were the cure. And to help keep them out of your cab, never keep any food in there.

I have seen some take out the cowling under the windshield and screen over the air intake. Not sure if newer models have any improvement there, probably not.

 

I'll leave these here. If you're sensitive to rats being trapped, don't watch. My brother has serious rat problems where he lives so he has studied these.

 

Same thing happens to me three times.... Dealer wanted 1600 to replace the engine wiring harness the first time.
I spent 60 dollars in connectors and a new soldering gun. Made it like new the first 2 times. 3rd time had to pull the upper intake manifold to get to the knock sensors. That cost me like 75 bucks.
If you have the time a little know how you can do it yourself also.

 

All 3 times I wasn't at home when it happened. I now use peppermint spray I got from lowes once a month and spray it around the engine bay and in the wheel wells (all 4).

They work great. I live in the mountains so I use Tom Cat poison and buckets. I got more than 70 mice last summer with the bucket.

 

If all of us only knew how many mice bits we consume, whether it be a bowl of cereal or some salad dressing, unfortunately they are in all of it.

 

I have heard that rodents like the Toyota wires because the wire coating is soy based and attracts them. My wifes 4runner got hit by them and they chewed the knock sensor harness. I put an electronic rodent repellent device on it and my Tundra that hooks to the battery. I also have 3 GM vehicles and have never had any rodent problems.

 

100% peppermint oil yes, but put like 2tbls in a spray bottle with a bit of dish soap (emulsifier) and fill with water. Shake it up and spray under hood and wheel wells. I spray the cabin filter too. 100% not mixed will burn your freakin eyes and this way you can spread it everywhere you need to. Parked outside in the county year round and so far no problem. Every other week or so.
