Alright folks.....the time has come and the lady needs a new ride. On the last go around I somehow talked her into buying a more fuel efficient car (which we needed at the time) a 2012 camry. It's actually a pretty nice car with way low maintenance. We use it to drive all over the country. Unless we are camping then we take the Tundra. Anyway...she is looking into buying a newer 4runner. I told her that she should maybe wait for the next gen runner to come out so that might give me a little more time. We will be keeping the camry so it only makes perfect sense to me to go all in on a rebuilt restored FJ40. She really doesn't do much driving and works from home. I blow up her work email with bad ass pictures of FJ 40's just to make sure she sees them. Now I need a little help from you all. Am I Crazy? Screenshot_20210628-152227_Chrome.jpg

I dunno man. A gal driving that around could have her pick of any Toyota man around. Choose wisely. ;) :boink:

Good point Phil, but she got hit with the ugly stick 40 times before she hit the ground. Not worried about that at all............I just kid you. She's a great woman. It's all good

Good luck with that, unless you're talking about a $100k Icon FJ40 which there isn't much FJ left then  but if she doesn't drive much, then the lack of creature (or any) comforts might not be a deal breaker. Tell her it's a convertible, having the roof off makes life 100x more fun even if your top speed is 55 :D

Got an 18 4Runner here, great wife ride. Much better engineering and build quality than my Tundra. You need to think about the next gen engines really hard. The current 4.0 v6 will go a long long time with minimal maintenance not to mention the transmission is about bullet proof. Sorry not what you wanted to hear.

This thread has some serious entertainment potential. And I’d really appreciate a restored FJ 40.

But, if you want my best advice re:
The wife wants a 4runner...tips on talking her into an FJ 40

my advice is, buy her a 4Runner. :angrygirl:

I never understand why guys think it’s a good idea that they’ll buy what they want, but push their wives to buy a vehicle they don’t want, so the dude can control another toy and “let” their wife drive it.

Get her the 4 runner and you could buy the fj40 for yourself

So this is the thing.......she really wanted a jeep but, we have a friend who's jeep broke down on him all the time. It once actually broke down in our driveway. After that she was way turned off on Jeeps. So I said, we could always find you an FJ 40. Like a jeep but, way better. She is definitely interested but, on a ledge. I feel what your saying but, it's really not all on me. I do like them though

I'm with you on the engine. I also read that their is a chance the 4runner will no longer be built in Japan which is kind of a bummer

If you want a happy wife get her the 4 runner end of story. Unless you want to hear all this complaining until she gets what she wants.
This is all you need !

When I was newly married I wanted my wife to get a reliable car, vs her college beater, she was happy with the beater. Finally she said I get it, you want me safe, yeppers. Safe as in not broke down someplace is what I wanted. So she says let’s go buy a Ford, her family were sorta of car people, but it had to be made in the USA. I’d owned American, Japanese and German products, Toyota was easily the best of those I’d owned. So at buying time, I gently suggested we test drive 3 vehicles, one of which I picked. She did and we got a new 95 4Runner that she drove to 250k, she loved it and after a Sequoia and two Rav’s, now wants another 4Runner. Smart lady.

OP, be careful, she could acquire a Land Cruiser taste if you play your hand right, not a bad first world problem to have.

This is a tough one. The Land Cruiser bug is hard to shake once you get it... Show her some Black Dog Traders rebuilt and modernized FJs. If those don't tickle her fancy (for $100k) than you might as well get a 4 runner. They aren't as cool, but they are capable, and comfortable... Although if she likes Jeeps, you might have a chance with selling her on the FJ... Good luck, we will all be jealous if you successfully convince her, and she actually likes it!

I see what OP is doing. He is going to buy it for his wife (after it becoming her idea), she will hate it after driving it a few times, then he will take it over.

OP should be in one of those "real men of genius" advertisements.

For some reason I get the impression that you have not been married for very long (ten plus years). I was thrilled when the wife wanted a new 4Runner. I went with it. I got lots of sex and she was happy. Five years later she wanted a new 4Runner. I was thrilled except she wanted the bare bones one but I talked her into the Sport model. She loved it. I got even more sex and she was happy. 16 years later she wanted a new 4Runner. Again she wanted the bare bones model but I talked her into the TRD Off Road Premium. She loves it.

The ride on the 4Runner isn't as stiff as the FJ40. There is more room in the 4Runner. The 4Runner is quieter, warmer, has a better sound system and the seats are more comfortable. If you succeed in talking her into the FJ40 she will blame you for everything that goes wrong that is bad that is involved even in the least with the FJ40.

It I were you I would just put my foot down and tell her that she is getting the FJ40. I would go out and pick one and just bring it home.

If it were me I would ask her what color of 4Runner would she like.

From an old guy that has been married three times and has a good one going now just get the 4Runner and build it "for her".

If you get the FJ40 please keep us updated.

I bought my wife a 2003 4Runner v8, 2wd… 7 years ago… (mistake on the 2wd but that’s what we could afford at the time)… if I so much as suggest getting rid of it she gives me the evil eye. …so +17 on the 4Runner.

    Id go with the 4r.

Ive been planning on getting my wife a GX, 4runner, or a Sequoia. The other day she tells me she wants a 2022 Acura TLX Type S and gives me this spiel that a TL Type S has always been her dream car. Not gonna lie though, these new ones look and seem pretty bad ass.

    Happy wife = happy life

Since no one has mentioned it, I'd go with the 4Runner.

I’m going to bring up a dead thread here, but OP left us hanging!! What was the end result? Did you listen to the practical folks in here and go with the t4r? Or did you listen to your nostalgic adventurous side and go FJ40?

I’ll share a similar experience here… about 7 years ago I was in a similar situation. Wifey drive an 08 BMW 325xi wagon… rad little car, but she kept curbing the wheels and felt like every pothole she hit was going to blow the car up (sport tuned suspension and low pro tires on m3 rims… rode like a track car…) so she wanted to upgrade to something more “robust”. Now, like yours I’m assuming, my wife is a saint, and actually has a bit of car enthusiast in her blood. She’s always liked 4Runners, but when I showed her the FJ60 series she was pretty stoked. We opted for a 1990 FJ62, citing the modern features such as power windows, auto trans (she can drive stick fine too) and the EFI as bonuses. We bought a low mile (262k lol) bone stock beauty and made some basic mods (OME 3”, SCS F5 wheels, 33”s) and updated all the brake system. She drove it like that for about 2 years until our first born came along, at which point we opted for a 2014 4Runner on account of safety… All in all, the experience was a positive one, she is nostalgic for the Cruiser, and still points them out on the road whenever we spot one. While we eventually ended up with the practical choice, I am very glad we took a chance and owned the FJ for a few years.
Anyways, do report back on what you ended up choosing, even tho this thread is a year old.

Here’s the FJ the day we bought it.
