Current HF antenna is a Silver Bullet Coil from Wolf River Coils, and a 43" whip. On a Firestick Stake Pocket mount. I have a Lil-TarHeel II ordered, but it's back ordered. On the VHF/UHF side it's a Comet SBB-5 on the same style Firestick mount, drilled out for a UHF mount. However that's all about to change. Subscribe to my build thread for updates, and send me a message if you want a preview :)

I have a McMurdo (fast find) PLB that I carry as well as 2 Baofeng radios. You buy the PLB and you're done, for a couple years. The Spot is cool too. People can watch your progress and it has limited messaging capability. Sat phones are cool too, fairly expensive and I read something about the number of satellites actually being reduced as they're being re-purposed for other more lucrative commercial endeavors.

ACR PLB because I use it on the ocean as well.
Actually, mine is a McMurdo but battery replacement is so expensive that I'll be switching to whomever is making a PLB with an owner replaceable battery option.

I thought there were regulations for actual PLBs that require sealed batteries that are supposed to last a specific amount of time? Mine (ACR RESQLINK) is good for 6 years then the entire unit is trash. Well actually, I think I can send it in and they replace the battery for a fee, but I havent checked. Its almost due I think

Check the build link in my signature.
Garmin inReach (actually a Delorme Inreach SE from before Garmin bought them). My wife actually used it this summer on her 126 mile hike along the PCT to coordinate the helicopter rescue of a stranded and hypothermic hiker.

You may be right about the regulations. I thought ACR made one that you could replace the battery in but I could easily be wrong. My Mcmurdo was good for maybe 4 yrs. At least there's no monthly or annual fee PLBs.

I'm pretty sure the ones you can change batteries are private network beacons like the in reach. I have one of those also. It charges with USB. But the network it uses is totally different than the ACR

Also, I think my in reach uses the iridium network too. I can txt with it, but it's pretty limited. Good for sending camp site pins though LOL

They have 3 different levels, I'll probably go with $20/mo.

Have a Spot and an InReach. Both work very well. The downside to the InReach is the subscription is expensive, so I turn it on and off regularly and only use it for back country or far off grid trips.

When in the backcountry, I have a few 2m/70cm handhelds as well as a Yaesu FT2980 in a portable rig setup that i carry. For a true emergency, I picked up a Iridium 9555 Sat Phone from a buddy that had it for his business DR plan. Best $450 I ever spent. I pre-pay for a 300 minute/year plan. The sat phone has been convenient and saved me some headaches over the years when needing to communicate/call home.

I received a Garmin In-Reach mini as a gift last year and I think they are pretty nice, but in the end I sold it because it just didn't make sense for me to pay the monthly fee for the limited service offerings (when compared to what an actual sat phone offers).
