300+ new homes, commercial buildings everything from hospitals, a bank, churches, some retail build outs. Later switched to high end "boutique" remodels. Pretty much retired now, pick up things I like to do, a lot of tile. Here are some recent tile pics.

I have zero renovation skills, sadly. We have some talent in this group based off of these pics!

Very impressive! I did similar work in my younger days (but not as nice). Even hung/wired a flat screen tv in the master bath so my wife could sit in the tub and watch her HG tv. (Scored big points.) When we put the house on the market, that's what women commented on the most. :) House sold immediately, too.

I hear ya. I'm handy, but legit renovations are out of my league unfortunately.

These are a couple pictures from my pool room: ceiling is stamped tin I salvaged from a historic courthouse I rebuilt and the bar is built from maple I salvaged from a remodel at the AZ state House of Representatives. The stain I got from the mfg of the pool table, which is also maple, so everything would match, including the picture rail, chair rail, base and the rest of the trim.

@Ericsopa this is what is meant by repurposing. If you're unable to get it try harder

I enjoy doing projects with the house (and truck). Not the best at home improvement but turns out looking much better than it was before. Except those dang wall fixes. Can never match the texture.

This is the first house I built for myself. I am just getting started with planning/land acquisition for my forever home. Big plans, can't wait.

Sorry, these are pics of pics(I'm old). Little over 3 months from ground break to move in. 2 levels with finished walk out basement.

    Day I bought the lot.

I've done some work on this house, Did the patio a couple years ago. We are about to finish our basement. I'm fairly handy, but still call dad over for most of my projects to help out and on really tricky stuff like framing up the stairs on the deck, I have 2 uncles and 3 cousins in construction that help me out.
Put this deck on my old house
    [IMG] [IMG]
On our current house, I put the stairs on the deck and then put the patio on. Here's some before and after pictures of it.

    And then the after

That makes sense. I enjoy doing projects myself and defintely like the feeling after completing it. I may be buying a tile saw soon and give a few small areas in the house a try, starting with the laundry room.

You can learn a lot from YouTube and the internet, thats one thing I have going for me!

I can do faucets, toilets etc. I will tell you- I am petrified of plumbing that gets more advanced from there. Do you know how much money I spent over the last two years due to my fuck ups on plumbing? Lol! Calling in an emergency plumber on a weekend isn't cheap :anonymous:

I'm pretty cool with most things fresh water related... I made a pressure test fitting so that if i solder up all the pipe work in a bathroom, before connecting to the rest of the house, I pressurized to 100psi and let sit overnight.... anything less than 100psi the next day and I wouldn't connect to the house. That helped me get really confident with my plumbing capabilities. I also only like copper & solder, I can't get into this whole PEX stuff.

Now poo pipes... that's a whole different story. I hate plumbing them, you can gravity pressure test them too if you so desire... I just tend not to.

What did you screw up that cost you so much?

We use to have 3 large trees in back yard but disease got them and had to have them removed. Now I needed a place to sit in the shade so built this 3 years ago. Took me about 6 weeks to build but age tends to slow us down.IMG_1317.jpg

I decided to change out the shower faucet and shower head. Looked simple enough. (Yes, I turned off the water :) )
The shower head- easy. Took me 10 minutes or so. I moved onto th faucet and started dissembling that. I got as far as the handle and ran into an issue. I believe it was the cartridge that would not budge. Well, I tried so hard I made it worse. I ran to HD in search of a replacement part- none. Ran to lowes- none. My last stop was at Ace, who had one in stock.
Unfortunately for me, the cartridge was so screwed that I needed a professionals help on a Saturday evening. Anyone I knew who was experienced in plumbing was out and about doing their thing.

A plumber came out, and repaired it by adding a sharkbite so I may have water on in the house. The plumber also pointed out that the original installer did a horrible job and did not secure the hot and cold lines properly. What does this mean? Cut the drywall and secure the lines- professionally.

I had him do all of that plus order the replacement part needed and that was in the $6-700 range if I recall correctly.

A month later down the road, the outside back flow was leaking and hammering when exterior irrigation (sprinklers) was on. I replaced all of the pieces (with a buddy) (not sure what I spent on this)

Two months later- the damn main pressure valve went bad. Professionally replaced? ~$900'ish.

So, one was my issue and the rest are just the joys of being an homeowner. My house was built in 2003, so it was only 13 years old and I was already dumping money in plumbing that shouldn't have needed it.

What I have done successfully is change light outlets (to adjustment from just an on/off) replaced locks, chandler, wall outlets, water heater, faucets, and misc crap. I've learned a LOT from YouTube and friends.

@gosolo Ya see, I understand the word, but it's just that it rarely describes the effort. You did a really beautiful job in your pool room. It was obviously a labor of love. "Repurpose" could've been using the tin ceiling panels to line the outside walls of an outhouse. Doesn't really say a thing to describe what went into the effort in the way of labor or love.

I "repurpose" manure in my garden every year, but that's not really what I'm doing.

These smaller tasks around the house really add up. I was talking with a coworker who had all of his sink faucets and toilets replaced and a couple other minor plumbing items and he spent like $5k plus on paying a company to do it. Add in stuff like fixtures, outlets, etc.. That stuff will add up really quick.

This reminds me, I need to replace all of the power outlets in my house. They are likely the originals and unless the plug is relatively new many of them have trouble holding in cords. :boom:

Ya I did all faucets, all door hinges/handles to brushed nickel, chandler, and then replaced the front porch lamps with brushed nickel with motion sensors built in ..can't even see them.

I added shelving throughout the entire garage, and god knows what else over the last 8 years. Oh well, it'll only help the sale :)

I took last week off because my wife was off on fall break. I decided to finish our patio cover because I need something to do... I am definitely not a professional, but I like to try new stuff. We had a crappy little cover when we moved in. I did the first section a little while ago and have been a little anxious to get it finished. I have to wrap up a few small things, but it’s close!
