On my way to work today I ran over a large busted tractor trailer tire. Luckily the truck is fine, no dents or flat tires, however the lower half of both of my doors is scratched up.

Painters of Tundras.com how bad did I screw up, am I looking at an entire respray of my doors or will they just blend the lower half of the doors.

Is it down to the metal or just in the clear-coat?

Oh heck, my tire chunk strike really messed up my paint (down to metal).

    Good luck...

Look at the bright side, nobody was injured due to an overcorrection. You would be surprised at how many people end up in the trees trying to swerve around a squirrel or similar. That said, some extra paint on the bottom of the doors is a good thing. Being a brand new truck I would definitely shop it for a few days, probably can pick up on the third day.

Nail catches on the scratches, plus they are on the textured rock chip portion so I don't have much faith that a detailer could hide that. Might be different if that portion of our trucks was just smooth paint.

From that picture it looks like those will mostly buff out. That top scratch seems to be the worst.

Even if they don't buff out completely, compound and polish will reduce the severity of the scratch to the point most people won't notice.

OP: I would rather have your scratch. I am looking at having this repaired (just this area) rather that have the entire panel repainted, and then putting on flares as the differences in red will always be noticeable IMO.

    See sig for mods...
Evaluating the damage, this is what I see with a 1 or 2-step correction using a random orbital buffer, Meguiars 105 and 205 with white and orange pads...you'll likely get it 85% out where the only way you will see it is from a non-perpendicular direction (i.e. 45 degrees or from the side) where you'll see the gouge in the clearcoat but from direct on, you won't see it most of the time.

IMO for things like this on the Tundra, if I can achieve 85% correction, I don't take more clear off to get it 95% plus because I'd rather preserve the clear. Let me know if you need instructions but you should be able to find how-tos on Youtube.

It’s fine. By the pic, you scratched the clear…buff and go…

IMO a good fine cut polish could blend that really well but it depends how much it will still bother you because nothing but a body shop fix will make it perfect. You could get it to where only you know it's there but that's the best you can hope for. I would just polish and consider it a battle scar. Scratches don't bother me half as much as dents, I have dent OCD.

At this point you've got nothing to lose so try buffing it out first.:notsure:

Buff it first to see how much improvement can be made. To answer your question you’ll want all of both doors painted if perfection is your goal. A spot job on a door is hack work that will break down and look worse with time. A good body shop will be happy to take your money to buff it then show it to you and let you decide if you want to spend more.

It really is hard to see in pictures but in person you can see about 8 scratches going from the bottom to top where the steel belt in the tire just absolutely gouged the paint, it's worse on the rear door. Its day 2 and im still sick about this, trucks only 6 months old. I've already reported it to my agent and he told me I have a year to make a claim on it. He's a car guy himself and mentioned checking around with some detailers first so that is what I'll do.

Have it buffed out by a detail shop or body shop

I've visited a few detailers, it appears that some of the scratches are too deep for their liking. Some flat out refused to do anything with it and other said they could buff them but they'd still be visible which sucks because they run from the back of the front door to most of the length of the rear door. I'm still checking around with a few more but next step is checking with some body shops to see what a respray of the two doors would cost.

Still weighing the decision to let a detailer take a crack at it first and see if its something I can live with but at the same time not wanting to throw my money away on it if it isn't.
