For anyone looking for other ideas and is willing to drill a bunch of holes in your bed (I've drilled over 15 holes into the bed for several mods already), here is what I did..

And some pictures of my tie down setup in use..

Edit: The 6 eye-rings are removable in case I need to load something big and flat into the bed, by the way, as they thread in like a bolt to the permanently-mounted female end.

Some Mods :) See build thread for details
Drill the holes before the spray liner and add some 1/8" or 1/4" aluminum plate underneath to distribute the load then you will be fine.

Good thinking on the plate...what size do you think it needs to be? 4"x4", 6"x6"?

Do you have any info as to where you got these removable rings or did you just weld a nut on the bottom and buy an eyelet? I could see this as a nice option - even if I mount them toward the sides of the bed.

I never knew such a thing was available. You sir just made my day! These are perfect because when I haul mulch and crap (literally, I haul manure for the garden) and with the Tacoma I was always hitting my D rings with the shovel. Now with these I can remove them beforehand, cap em, and I'm good to go!

Just discovered this. Very cool. I would guess you can install all kinds of things in the insert, not just the eye bolt. Like a D-ring or other items?

Yea, you could, such as using the holes to bolt down a removable storage system.

Be sure and buy D rings that are welded. if not they'll pull apart with a heavy load.

I assume if I add D-Rings to these bolts, they are bolted in a reinforced area and there is no risk of pulling them through the truck bed or liner?

I don't care if the D-Ring was to break somehow, but wouldn't want to use a ratchet strap tie down on one of them and pull the bolt up through the bed and cause damage to the truck.

    Big post gap but....
Bolts go into frame under bed. Once properly installed they are not going to pull out in any normal situation. However, unlike the OP in this thread, I do not recommend placing the ring plate between the bed and the washer and cutting the washer. File or grind the retention ribs off the bolt and place the ring plate between the bolt head and the washer.

I never found a torque spec from Toyota on that bolt though.

I liked this idea, and didn't mine drilling holes, but wanted them off to the side a bit more.

Instead of notching the washer, I put the hook in between bolt and washer. Cleaner look

We just got our Tundra in June. Bed looked pretty much like the one above. Before trip to Cali on Independence Day, did some quick prep to the bed, sprayed and rolled Rustoleum bed liner, and installed the box. Its no Rhino, but was about $30, black, done,20200630_184337.jpg and I can touch it up anytime.

I just added the same thing to mine over the weekend. I went on top of the washers like someone else mentioned on here, and I found some with a bigger hole so I didn’t need to drill out the tie-down first.

and I’ve already put them to use too!

I like this better than cutting off part of the washer.

How did you get the washer off the bolt? Just grind down a little of the bolt till the washer came off?

Doing this right now, just used a file to take those top threads down. Just rolled it slow on the box as I filed, took maybe 2 min per bolt? No idea why those threads are there, they don’t go into anything.
Used these JHCL 2” v-rings and didn’t need to bore them out so didn’t need to paint. They seem to be exactly the same inner size as the washer. Got the 10 pack so I can use them wherever.

I think I filed one bolt like you did and then I read that you could use a 1.5” pipe, put the bolt head first into it, then hit the end of the bolt with a hammer to roll those threads over and pop the washer off. Reversed the process to sandwich in the tie downs. Filing them down makes it way easier to reconfigure in the future though and is probably the way to go.

Nice write up. I ended up using a dremel with a sanding disk to take down the threads and probably took less than 30 min to install rings on all 6 bolts. (Projects are more fun with power tools. :D)

Regarding the bolt that goes through the bed, does it screw directly into the frame or is there a nut/washer under the bed of the truck? Thanks!

Thanks for the write up! You inspired me and I did the exact same thing. The JCHL brand has been out of stock for a couple weeks so I ordered a brand listed right after them on Amazon (Seven Sparta I think). All I had to do was file down the washer retention rings and the holes on the rings were already large enough to fit the bolt shank. Quick and easy upgrade.

I also found someone use these (or smaller ones) to mount just behind the track system using the bolts holding the track system in place. They just hang down below and are pretty low profile and may give me a use for the rest of the 10 pack I bought... Figured I would share the idea.

Man I didn't save the pic so I tried to find it again and it was HARD to track down but I think this is the one I saw, along with the reddit post. Hope it helps you.

Pretty clean looking, low pro, and would be great if you didn't always have a need for having infinite adjustment of the be rails all the time because they're ready to go.
