Ordering New Tundra at MSRP, a Good Idea?

I spoke to a local dealership and they aren't able to take any 2022 Tundra order. But they told me as soon as the build sheet is available they can take some deposit and submit an order to Toyota before the pricing is available.

However, they'll want me to sign on the build sheet order that the selling price will be MSRP (To be determined when available). I've never paid sticker in my whole life so this buying at MSRP thing seems nerve wrecking to me.

In the past, is/was there any trim of Tundra that ALWAYS transacted at or near MSRP? I know that the Tacoma TRD Pro almost always sell at MSRP regardless of market condition, SRs and others tend to get modest discount.

So if I have to buy at MSRP, might as well get the trim of Tundra that no discount can be had anyway.

Check your surrounding area. Supply is low across the board for new and used vehicles.

right, but 2022 Tundra will arrive almost at the end of the year, I guess the low supply isn't gonna drastically improve anytime soon, so maybe MSRP for 2022 Tundra is a good price

Toyota inventories are down but new 2021 Tundras are still out there. Both dealers near me have several each. Toyota planned ahead and has plenty of chips. By the time the 22's are in play, things should be at least on their way back to normal. I've been asking around (here on the forum) and it seems 12% to as high as 16% below MSRP is doable so I'm going to hold out for that. I can because I'm not in a rush, maybe you can't wait but for me MSRP or above is out of the question.

You might be able to haggle off of MSRP with a truck on the lot but not on a special order in this market.

Seems to me that if you're desperate enough to order a truck 6 months before it's available and without knowing anything about it, you'd be willing to pay what they're asking.

I'm having a good year and may take advantage of the 6,000 pound Section 179 Deduction. So I would order it as soon as it hits the dealer.

I’d rather not list. My wife might see it.
There’s always a price to pay when you want to be one of the first to get a new model; paying MSRP is one of them. In fact, not having to pay a dealer mark up is nice.

Another price to pay… having to deal with minor but possibly annoying issues that Toyota hasn’t figured out because its a new model.

Hopefully, it won't be the same type of market in 6 to 9 months.

Fortunately, Ford will be selling their 2nd year of the new F150 and GM will be selling the revised Silverados/Sierras by then.

Is your deposit fully refundable? If yes, nothing to lose. If no, then no way would I agree to buy a vehicle that is mostly sight unseen, and for sure would never buy one that I have not actually driven or driven an identical. As for MSRP, if you plan to keep it 10+ years, really not a big deal. If the vehicle is a "hit", MSRP might be a bargain, if not, well back to the fully refundable deposit.

One of the San Antonio dealers had at least 10 used Tundras in stock last week when I picked up my plates. A number with the antenna fin so recent models. And many were TSS packages.

A fully refundable deposit if I don't like the deal...no problemo.
A TRD Pro again no problemo

    In writing of course.

I see no downside in throwing down a deposit. Well, besides missing out on 0.0007% interest (taxable of course) at the local bank!

Well I look at it this way. Plus or minus a few thousand dollars is really not much when you're spending $50k plus for a truck. About 6 more months in car payments?

I got my last vehicle at $4k less than MSRP, but in hindsight I would prob pay more to have the vehicle with the features that I want. Memory seats, tow hitch, etc.

Why is paying “sticker” for a vehicle such a deal breaker for some people?

Manufacturer dispenses with the “fake” promos and doesn’t overprice their product by 5-8k - only charges what they will sell the product at to anyone - yet people object because they can get a “better deal” on another brand paying near the same price on a product that “stickered” for 8k more - but used sells for 5% LESS?!?

OP - just because you have never paid sticker before on a vehicle doesn’t mean it’s wrong. The market is what it is - which right now is you will not find many discounts and what you do find you likely don’t want.

It’s not as if you are getting cheated paying sticker for a 2023 - even though pricing has not been released yet. There is little to no chance that you will sign the agreement and then 4 months later Toyota will start some huge promo offering thousands in incentives on the truck. It will be the 2nd MY of a major refresh - simply stated more buyers than sellers right now.

if you like the truck - order one. You get the trim level you want and the knowledge you will be able to get one and a delivery date. Searching for something on a dealer lot is going to be time consuming and unlikely to yield a “better” deal. Value your time over hoping to save a penny on a ‘22 “leftover” - there are unlikely to be many and again what’s left will command a premium. I’m know of several brand dealers who are simply allocating their remaining 22s as “courtesy cars” - titling and using for a couple of months and then either offering as used at prices above sticker to avoid running afoul of the manufacturer or simply sending them to auction knowing they will make more than selling as new to a consumer.

Couple of things I noticed about your post. First off you said you have never paid MSRP, neither have I, so why start now. That I am aware of the only tundra that was at or close to MSRP were the Pros. Every other tundra had discounts off MSRP. Also, if you are willing to wait x amount of months for the truck then I would imagine you really don’t need one. Which brings me back to why pay MSRP for it. The market will/is coming down. Dealers are going to have to start giving discounts. My dealer is sitting on a couple of them because they want to be greedy and sell at MSRP. People are either starting to realize that these trucks are not worth what they are sold for or the economy has taken a toll on them and can’t afford one.

To a point also. I priced out a 22 with the same options as mine and it a 12k difference. That’s a lot of money to not think about, not pennies. I am aware of the way the market is but I think alot of this has happened because people keep buying into it. I am no one to tell people how to spend their money but if you have a perfect 2018 or similar and just want the 22, then have at it. But if people spoke more with their pockets and didn’t buy dealers eventually would deal. My opinion of course. Down here dealers are starting to advertise rebates, low interest, discounts, etc. They are also advertising that their lots are full of used cars. All the dealers I drive by now have full lots new/used. I think it’s catching up with them.

“If I don’t buy and I get everyone to stay away - dealers are gonna start dealing and we will all get better deals.”

This is 100% the thought process of every person who has organized a “gas boycott” on social media the past year. So remind me again how well those boycotts worked….

Markets fluctuate based on so many variables - and foot traffic in a dealership isn’t one of them. Saying “I’ll just sit and wait” is NOT going to hurt s dealer - if dealers have 40% lower than typical inventory - they are not going to shoot themselves in the foot to sell something the moment it comes in the door. They WIlL let it sit - knowing another supply disruption is entirely possible tomorrow and they f it happens - inventory is pure profit to be had.

A lot of people said 6 years ago housing was too high and would cool down - and now they are right. Problem is the market went up 100% plus in that period of time - cooling down 10% still leaves people standing on the outside looking in who waited and thought they would “nab a deal”.

if you need it and want it and can afford it - buy it. Timing the market is overall proven to be a poor strategy historically. If you did it before - it’s likely only blind luck. If your able to do it continuously - you need to be either consider yourself extremely lucky or find a way to use other people’s money to play the financial market.

Yet the topic remains a common discussion today - people expecting “discounts” off sticker.

What’s funny - how fast could you sell a new Tundra asking what the sticker on any model was in July 2021…probably would have a line of willing buyers right now. Hell - even if you had a 2021 with 3 miles/never titled - I don’t feel it would be a problem even though it technically a year old.

Everyone argues you should wait and prices will fall - how well did that work out for those buyers in the 2nd half of 2021 and so far in 2022?

Are dealers shooting themselves in the foot by sitting on new inventory? They sure seem to be doing a lot of funny stuff lately to show they are turning new inventory to avoid ruining their allocations. Feds pumping up interest rates are changing buying patterns already so buyers banding together to avoid dealers with markups in hopes of screwing the dealer over is a pipe dream. Sounds good in theory but would never work, too many variables at play.

The main idea for anyone in this world is to take note of when is it a good time to be a buyer and when is it a good time to be a seller. It's a better time for sellers at the moment so offload some of that old junk you have laying around and make some money on it. When it's a buyers market, pick up that fancy new truck or house. That is the only thing that can be "timed." The people who get screwed are the ones always needing something new during a time when its a sellers market, need to move, need a new car etc etc. YMMV

The gas boycott was a joke, we need gas. I am more talking about the people that have a perfectly working truck but want to keep up with the Joneses. But like I said, I am no one to tell people how to spend their money. And you are correct, a lot of variable play into the equation. Me personally, I don't need or want to play into that equation. The housing market is another fiasco on its own. But everything that goes up must come down and it been happening. It will not happen over night but it will happen. As for the prices falling in 2022, well like I said some manuf are bringing back rebates, discount on MSRP and better loan terms. Regardless I am glad I bought my house when I did and my 2020 Tundra when I did. I don't have to worry about getting bent over.

To be fair, prices will come down eventually, once inventory comes back up, whenever that may be. You sure sound like a glass is half empty type of person lol.

I am not sure automobile manufacturers will ever build more than demand . theybhave figured out that supply and demand works well for them and the dealers.

The manuf loses in my opinion. They sell to dealers. If dealers don’t have inventory they don’t make money. The manuf doesn’t make any profit off of the high prices. As a matter of fact this quarter has been a lose for many if not all manuf. They profit by manufacturing more not less.

Not sure if this still pertains to the discussion but I bought my 2021 Sienna in Dec 2020 at $3k below MSRP. I think I got a good deal cause the salesman was very salty. I can prob sell my Sienna at a profit right now.

I still think plus or minus $5k is penny pinching. I prob wouldn't touch anything $5k over MSRP though...I'm not a rich man. Lol.
