What’s going on guys! New to the forum as I just purchased my first Tundra this past Friday. I’m thinking about replacing the CAI it has with a aftermarket one? Any suggestions!? I’ve been thinking of the aFe Cold Air Intake along with the Throttle Body Spacer. Takes?

TB spacer is a complete waste of money. CAI is also a waste of money unless you get a snorkel or just like your truck to be insanely loud. Zero performance gains from either.

Just throw in a afe dry filter and the airbox accelerator.
Other than that, a cai is just for adding some bling to the engine bay.

save your money. spend it elsewhere. I bought the trd CAI because it was 40% off and it looks cool when i open the hood. I open the hood maybe once every few months to check fluid levels. also depending where you live the TRD is probably your only option due to smog regulations.

Wow. I’m seeing a ton of 50/50. I was hoping to add a little extra kick and to help the MPG. Looks like I have a ton to research. Thanks everyone

there's no way to get better MPG in this truck other than not driving it.

I upgraded my stock intake with TRD drop-in air filter and airflow accelerator for a few months hoping the mpg will improve but it didn't.

Now, I have an eye-candy TRD Cold Air Intake to pair with my TRD exhaust, mpg still the same. Love the sound though especially with nannies off.

If you study the factory airbox... you will see it is already an efficient cold air intake system... as it draws air from the wheelwell area outside of the hot engine compartment.
It also has a baffle incorporated in the tube to cancel out the intake noise.
"back in the day"... we use to flip the air cleaner lid on a quadrajet 4bbl for the extra noise. I think I was around 16 or 17 at the time... and have since grown to appreciate NOT having that noise.

The only thing gained from the TRD kit or any aftermarket kit is intake noise... and the perceived impression that you have more power because of it.

@Dragracer_Art awesome! Thanks for the information boss. After popping opener then hood and checking out the air filter system, you’re right. Does draw air from wheel wall

You may gain a little more airflow if you pluck out that white plastic charcoal layer in the airbox lid. I did that the first day home with the truck.

Aftermarket cold air intake manufacturers want you to believe that the factory intake is substandard because it restricts airflow into your engine. What they fail to tell you is that the throttle body and valves are the biggest restrictions in the engine. You can’t overcome those restrictions by using a larger intake pipe or larger exhaust pipe. You’re still limited by the size of the throttle body and the size of the valves.

Aftermarket cold air intakes actually reduce performance
Factory intake systems are already [IMG]designed to give maximum performance. First, they already take in cold air from outside the engine compartment.

I've got the Stillen. I don't care what people say - the box is bigger and filter has greater surface area, and the Stillen doesn't take in air from the engine bay, it takes it from the wheel well and from the grill, and all components are made of HDPE so overheating components --> overheating air isn't an issue.

I live in a part of the country where it's HOT the majority of the year. I bypassed the throttle body coolant and added the Stillen CAI and recorded anywhere from 2 to 8 degree cooler temperatures over intake manifold coils after 15 minutes of driving. It could be the TBCB and/or the CAI - I didn't control for one or the other, but logic forces me to believe that I'm improving intake temps if I'm taking more, cooler air from outside of the engine bay, into it.

Guess I missed that memo. I cant speak for the Tundra, since I dont really see a need to dyno it, but heres a dyno from my s2000 showing the opposite of your claim. Red is with a K&N, without a cover on over the filter.

    s2000.jpg

Im currently running a K&N on the Tundra and havent noticed any downsides other than it didnt make more noise than my DD budget dual, so I cant really hear it.

I added the aFe Magnum FLOW Pro DRY S Air Filter to the stock CAI, it works as advertised.
