I think boys can DO it!, as long as you’re not hang up on keeping your paint and body perfect.

Does that ‘fridge open enough to access everything, under the overhang of the open shell?

Spent last week on the road with @Sgt Grunt for our up coming 50th birthdays (several months still). It also will mark 31 years of friendship and brotherhood since we met on the first day of infantry training, which also happened to be my 19th birthday. Semper Fi.

We both left on a Thursday and made is about halfway to Flagstaff, both of us coming from opposite directions. I made it out to the Mojave desert and found a nice spot to set-up for the night with no one else around. It was almost a full moon, so it was bright that night. Also, a great morning for a sun rise.

From there, headed out to Flagstaff with the obligatory stop and picture at Devil Dog Road (it's jarhead thing).

    1-20210528_131839.jpg

From there, made it to town, met up, got some groceries and lunch and headed out to find a spot to camp between town and the South rim of the Grand Canyon. We found a nice spot off the road way back in the trees set-up camp, cracked some cold ones and let the old times and stories roll.

The following morning, we got up pretty early and hit the road to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon in route to the North side.

From there, we headed out to the east and then North on 89. Here, we crossed the Colorado River for the first time and then went down to Lee's Ferry and had lunch at the river and were able to get the feet wet enough to find out that water was cold.

After that, we headed out to the North Rim at Crazy Jug Point and found a camp spot big enough for two vehicles on the edge of the canyon with no one else around. So we set up camp, made some dinner, got to watch the sun set over the Grand Canyon and cracked a bottle of Whiskey.

The next morning, I was up again early, watched the sun rise over the Grand Canyon, waited for buttercup to get up, then brewed up some coffee, packed up and hit the road again back up to the Kaibab Plateau Visitors Center to fuel up.

From there we continue to head North on Forest Road 247, where we eventually hit House Rock Rd and crossed into Utah on a dirt road.

    1-20210530_103456.jpg

    1-20210530_111917.jpg

We then came to Hwy 89 and headed East for a couple of miles to Cottonwood Canyon Rd and continued North on this long and dusty road testing the trucks while regularly going 40+ mph on the roads. Made a quick stop for lunch along the cottonwoods and continued with another stop at Grosvenor Arch and then continued on to start looking for a spot to set-up camp. After shooting off some side roads. we came across a spot that was, well, nothing was good out there. It was windy and just a bunch of scrub pine. We did finally get to a spot and started to set-up, nut never unloaded. Also, go bit up by a bunch of "nosee-ums", which were nasty. We said to hell with this and continued on and ended up in Cannonville, UT and ended up setting up at the Bryce Valley Ranch RV park, where they had showers and it was a new facility. Then broke-out the beer, rib eye's and veggies and ate pretty good and met some great people from Kentucky.

We woke up Monday (Memorial Day), made up some coffee and hit the showers. As we were getting ready to head out, one of the gentlemen from Kentucky stopped up and thanked us for our service and gave us a $100 bill and said that drinks in Moab were on him. We tried to politely decline, but he insisted. What a way to start the morning. So we hit the road.

    1-20210531_081738.jpg

We made it a couple of miles and saw a cemetery in Henrieville, UT with a bunch of flags, so we turned around and went up to walk around. We noticed that flags were placed at those headstones of ones that had served. We saw a lot of Army and Navy, then we ran across the only Marine we could find. Well, I had packed some USMC flags, so we quickly pulled it out and placed the flag at his headstone. His name, Leland Patterson Pollock of the 3rd Marine Division (COB 1STBN 21ST MARS 3RD MARDIV FMF) and a Purple Heart recipient during WWII. After that, we hit the road to Boulder, UT to get on Burr Trail Rd. The plan was to take that to Lake Powell and ride the ferry, but the water levels were too low, so we had to reroute to the North to cross at the Hite Crossing Bridge.

After driving all day, mainly dirt roads, we pulled over and decided to just start looking for a place. There weren't a whole lot of good looking options, and we headed along Hwy. 95 and then turned towards Natural Bridges National Monument. From there, we turned on Elk Mountain, were we started finding several camp sites, but nothing that was looking spectacular. We pushed on up the hill and next thing we know were at 8,400' elevation branching off several side roads. After a bit, we found a spot amongst tall pines, flat, and with a view. This was the spot, so we set-up camp and BS'd well into the night, yet again.

Yet another morning and up early for some of us, same old morning routing, coffee, pack-up and hit the trail.

    1-20210601_070849.jpg

    1-20210601_070911.jpg

Came across a spot with a heck of a view and stopped to check it out.

    1-20210601_081417.jpg

We then headed into the big city of Blanding, UT for some gas and got some breakfast at Yak's Cafe. Definitely a place to grab a meal if ever in the area. From there, we were looking at back tracking a bit to get back on the route, but after referencing the map, we decided on an alternate route out of town to get back on track. The route was worth it and we started climbing in elevation again (7,500 ft). We came out to the meadow at an intersection and stopped and @Sgt Grunt saw this spot off to the left and said let's take a break for a few.

    1-20210601_123055.jpg
So we went over there and pulled out the chairs. After about an hour (mind you, this is about noon now), we said, to hell with it, this is the spot, so we set-up camp and, well, grabbed a cold brew . After all, we're on vacation. We just relaxed and eventually got to cooking some dinner and, well, got into that whiskey again.

Time to continue the trip report.

The next morning, up before the sun, coffee brewing and pack up and hit the road towards Moab. It was quite interesting that within one hour of being on the road, we went from cool temps and large pines to the desert South of Moab.

From there, we hit the pavement and headed into Moab. We got into town too early to check in, so we went and did a scenic drive up Shafer Canyon Rd. We got a good laugh at the young couple in their convertible Mustang with Florida plates trying to making it up the road. We here hoping to the the Mustang back in town, minus some plastic trim, but we never did.

After making it up, we looped back to town and checked in and grabbed a cold beer and hit the pool to rinse a little dirt off.

Last weekend, I went for a long drive and something followed me home. Good thing I had already convinced they wife to let me keep it.

Spring over with YJ springs, re-gear and some whopping 33" tires. It will be the Delta cruiser rig (since we live in the Delta) and tow to where you wheel wheeler

Haven't done a thing with the Tundra lately except cry every time I pull into the gas station to fill it up, plus, had been busy with the Samurai. Towed the Samurai out to Prairie City OHV to test it out.

This spring, did a long road trip, from CA to AZ through UT and back to CA. Some awesome scenery.
